DevPhone 2 updates with new bootloader?

Hi all,
Newbie here...just bought a DevPhone 2 and trying to understand the
flash process but both the recovery mode process and the fastboot
process fail for me. When I attempt the fastboot process referenced
at http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s5, it doesn't work because the
device I have came with bootloader 1.33.3007 and this requires older
version(s).

So, is there a newer fastboot that works? Is there a way to make
recovery mode work? My intent in purchasing this was to test with
varying versions of the OS but I can't seem to find a way to do that
with this device.

What am I missing???
