Dear all,

I just received an email about Device Seeding Program for Top Android
Market Developers:

Subject: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
From: android-mar...@google.com

Due to your contribution to the success of Android Market, we would
like to present you with a brand new Android device as part of our
developer device seeding program. You are receiving this message
because you're one of the top developers in Android Market with one or
more of your applications having a 3.5 star or higher rating and more
than 5,000 unique downloads.

In order to receive this device, you must click through to this site,
read the terms and conditions of the offer and fill out the
registration form to give us your current mailing address so that we
can ship your device.

You will receive either a Verizon Droid by Motorola or a Nexus One.
Developers with mailing addresses in the US will receive either a
Droid or Nexus one, based on random distribution. Developers from
Canada, EU, and the EEA states (Norway, Lichtenstein), Switzerland,
Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore will receive a Nexus One. Developers
with mailing addresses in countries not listed above will not receive
a phone since these phones are not certified to be used in other
countries.

We hope that you will enjoy your new device and continue to build more
insanely popular apps for Android!

The email is from Google but I am still doubting somehow. Is this a
spam? Any other developers receive this emails before?

Thanks.

Got it too !

Well it's really weird :

The mail is from google but this could be forged.

But the web site is a google.com !!

But it's not the colors or anything of Google.

But Eric Chu is really part of the Android Team :D

Man my head aches :D

I think it's fake, because it creates entry in somebody spreadheat
and it's powered by google sites

Ok my bad, its a site made on google sites so could be done by anyone,
it's not Google colors.

And they ask for the receipt number to access google checkout they
shouldn't ask.

Not legit in my opinion and too good to be true.

Be careful.

Ok I can confirm, it's a fake.

The android-mar...@google.com returns failure notice and
doesn't exists in google.

That would have been so good :D

Just done a little googling, the email was mailed-by
scoutcamp.bounces.google.com.

That system appears to be googles internal method of sending batch
mail, that makes it genuine to me!

Holy shit, I wish Google would verify this or say something...I don't know what the implication of giving your purchase order number away is.

I did see the scoutcamp.bounces.google.com text in the mail header so that makes me feel a little better, but who's to say that some clever person wasn't able to find a way to distribute mass mails through this system.

The headers do look legit. I've checked all the IP's and they're
either Google or IANA.

Is 5K+ that big a deal to begin with? I know most top apps get more
than that per day. Too low a threshold to be real AFAIKT.

I met the requirements and received the email as well. I hope this
is real but I am skeptical...

Why is there nothing on the dev blog?
Why is there nothing on the official market wepbape?
Why is there not a notification or something when you log into the
android market?
Why is it sites.google.com and not a "real" webpage?

All of these things have me very suspicious...

Larry

If it's real, google can just give us a link in the android market
webpage instead of making a google site which is public to all the
ppl.

But anyway...I am gonna fill the form guess I won't lose anything...

Well, if nothing else, Google should now be on the lookout for
potential fraudulent activity involving developer account and order
numbers. Especially originating out of China :-) Although it would
be nice to think that they would have someone in a Security role who
could jump on this sort of thing, and provide some official
information. But their warehouses full of geniuses are probably much
too busy for such trivial matters... :-)

Just got this one, myself. I'm still incredibly suspicious for what
should be pretty obvious reasons, but then again, didn't Google give
out free ADP1s to people who attended the first dev conference?
Doesn't seem so ridiculous in that light...

There's just enough grains of truth that make me not want to dismiss
it straight away, but it does seem quite dubious nonetheless. The
fact that the Subject: and From: headers are being repeated in the
body of the message set off a few red flags in my head. But, if it IS
true, then, well, all the better! Because, hey, free phone, right?

Even if its a scam they didn't collect any "sensitive" info other then
my address. Google does things like this all the time.

Honestly I feel this is all due to the low adoption rate of Android
2.0 from manufacturers. It makes sense for Google to get these in our
hands to start developing apps.

I for one feel its totally legit.

On the other hand I think Google can afford to give away phones to
1000 developers.
As I see it, it would be a huge benefit for them to encourage the
developers for futher development.

I pinged Mr. Nurik by non-email channels to get confirmation when this
first broke. He replied by the same means and posted the message to the
group.

It would take quite the hacking job for this to be fake at this point.

No its the order number of the Google checkout receipt you got when
you registered as a developer/publisher.

Just one last question. Why would the form have this question:
Future Offers * Can we contact you with offers related to Android or
the Android market going forward? Your information will not be shared
with any third parties.

Google emails us this kind of information anyway...

Go to Google Checkout (not for sellers, but for buyers!) and go to
your order when you paid the $25 to put apps in the market... That
order number is about a 15 digit (or so) number. Use that.

Heh, I'm old schoolin' it with my G1 my wife got me wayyyyyyy back.
I've already convinced a good handful of friends to join Android and
they love it. In fact the other day I was with a buddy when he bought
his first Android phone and I said to the Sprint lady that Google
should pay me commission! Ha, don't we wish.

I'm happy with a Droid or N1 - whatever, I'm not picky. Thnx Google!

I used the Google Order number on my receipt for the $25 Android

Although my Google Checkout account email address(personal) doesn't
match the contact email address on my Market account(info@xx), which
