Greetings,

I've been using the DAISY Reader this week. I really like it. The interface is simple and intuitive, and the player works well. Here's my feedback (two requests and two possible bug reports). I'm using a Droid 1 with 2.2.2.:

1. I'd like to move backward and forward within a section (say, in 30- or 60-second increments, but ideally in one of several options). Right now, if I'm interrupted, I can't just go back a little to hear the last few sentences, but must go back to the beginning of the chapter. The ability to move backward and forward in small increments is especially important if I'm taking notes or reading material that is new or difficult for me.

2. I'd like feedback (e.g., a soft click or short vibrational burst) to signal that I've successfully moved up or down in depth when I swipe left or right. Sometimes, especially the first few times I used the app, I didn't manage to change the navigation level until the second or third attempt, so having the feedback would be nice.

3. I'm not able to get to Navigation Level 3. This issue may be the book, not the Reader. One of the books I'm listening to is the New Testament. According to the information at the beginning of the book, there are 3 navigation levels: book at Level 1, chapter at Level 2, and verse at Level 3. With the DAISY Reader, I'm able to move to book and chapter, but not to verse.

4. I'm not able to return to the home screen after pausing a book. when I'm listening to something, I tap the screen once to stop playback. Then if I want to listen to something else, I press the menu button. One of my options is Return to Home Screen. Nothing seems to happen when I press the selector on that. To return to the screen with the Open, Open Last book, etc., options, I need to press the Back button one or more times.

Thanks for the good work.

Ana,
Thank you for your great feedback and suggestions. I'll consider all of them during my work to improve the software. Some of your suggestions are already in my backlog e.g. moving backward and forward in a section.

I'll check with the new testament. Which version are you using - there are lots. I know the player generally works ok with books with several levels, I listen to some with up to 5 levels, and have tested it with books that have 3 levels.

Glad that moving backward and forward within a segment is already on the list of future features. If that is implimented, it would be great to have a user setting for letting the screen go to sleep or keeping it on. If I'm listening to something enjoyable, I don't need the screen on as I won't be interacting much with the book, but if I'm reading something that I'm taking notes from, etc., I may want to rewind and fast forward frequently without having to keep turning the screen on again.

The New Testament that says it has navigation levels at book, chapter, and verse but appears to have them at book and chapter only is the NIV New Testament linked to on the WIKI area of the Daisy Reader.

Thanks again.

Ana, All,
I've just released an interim version of the DaisyReader that includes
simple support to rewind and fast-forward through the audio by using
gestures diagonally down and left to rewind by 10 seconds and
diagonally down and right to fast-forward 10 seconds. I will find ways
to improve your ability to control the navigation once I've enhanced
the current user-interface code (which comes from the eyes-free
project). I've marked the relevant feature request 29 as 'fixed' even
though there's more work to do, to get your feedback on the feature.
Here's a link to the issue containing the feature request
http://code.google.com/p/android-daisy-epub-reader/issues/detail?id=29

The software now includes Swedish for the first time, we are very
fortunate to have 3 Swedes helping with the translations so I expect
it will improve in subsequent releases.

I hope to make another release within 10 days. I don't yet know what
features it will include, there are several options that will depend
on the time I have available, and on whether participants at a 2-day
accessibility hack days event in Birmingham decide they'd like to
contribute. Here's a link to the event in case any of you are
interested http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/events/devcsi/accessibility_hackdays/programme/

Ana,
I have checked and the New Testament definitely only has 2 levels, not
3. There are 2 places to check in the files that comprise the book.
Both are in the file called ncc.html You will need to use a text
editor e.g. Notepad, to see the information easily. The places to
check are in the header section, look for something called ncc:depth
Here's the value for the NIV new testament book:
<meta name="ncc:depth" content="2" />

The second thing to check are the individual links in the body of this
file. Level 1 sections are indicated by h1 labels, level 2 by h2, etc.
This book only contains links at levels 1 and 2.

All the best

I've just created another feature request for providing feedback to
users, here is the link to the issue
