Android Phones Sell Out

Over at the San Jose Mercury News, Chris O'Brien argues that despite all
the hype, Google's new Android mobile Internet software will fizzle out
and die. The key, O'Brien says, is looking at the global market, where
customers and businesses have barely paid attention to the new phone.
Google's already starting at a disadvantage, as BlackBerry, Windows
Mobile, the iPhone, and Symbian have already established a strong market
share, and Google will have to claw its way up to the top. But what
about the fact that Android is open-source software, and developers
around the world will rush to make it a superior product? O'Brien sees
several problems with this. First, Google won't have the only
open-source product on the market; Symbian is about to do the same
thing, and a Linux-based mobile-phone operating system is in the works.
Second, open-source software will, in fact, work to the detriment of
Google. Just like what happened with Facebook, most developers will make
useless or trivial applications, flooding the world with junk, and
customers will have no way of distinguishing the wheat from the chaff.
In the end, O'Brien writes, Android will be just another throw-away
project like Chrome or the Open Social Initiative.
Well, maybe. But don't count out Google just yet. According to Motley
Fool, the first shipment of T-Mobile's Android phones has already sold
out, forcing the company to triple its manufacturing order. That
promptly sold out as well. Which means 1.5 million Android phones have
already been sold, and the phone hasn't even hit the streets yet. We've
asked Google how many T-Mobile phones will be on the market in time for
Christmas. You'll know when we know
