Apple’s share of mobile web falls, Android at the top

Posted by Joshua

A recent report has claimed that there has been a decline in Apple’s share of mobile device internet use amongst leading mobile device brands. The analysis of this report suggests that this decline in Apple’s share of the mobile web market is an indication that the fight to take control of the mobile phone and tablet market is far from over.

The analysis was carried out by 51Degrees.mobi, a leading provider of web optimization and device detection solutions. This analysis was compiled by analyzing the browsing patterns of mobile devices based on data from its online partners over the past year. It indicates that while Apple’s lead in the mobile internet traffic department is fading, it is still the leader in the UK market. However, it has now been overtaken by Android in the United States. It also says that Blackberry’s share of the web traffic continues to remain stable, but Nokia has started to slip in India.

The paper, titled 51Degrees.mobi Mobile Web Trends 2011, demonstrated that the percentage of mobile internet users in the United States who had Android devices had overtaken the percentage of mobile internet users who had Apple devices towards the end of the calendar year 2011. Apple’s iOS’ share of internet traffic fell to about 34.1% in December 2011 in the United States, while Android’s share jumped up to about 36.6%. Apple retained its vast lead in the European market with about 42.6% of mobile internet users being Apple device users, but Android has increased its share to about 25.5% of all mobile web visits by the end of the last year.

Research In Motion’s Blackberry OS saw its figures in this department remain remarkably stable in both the American and the European markets with alterations being limited to a fraction of a percentage point. Europe and the United States both saw Blackberry usage remaining at about 9% throughout the year.

However, unlike the mobile device market in the United States and Europe which has traditionally been dominated by Apple, RIM and now Android, cellphone device use in India has traditionally been dominated by Nokia and its operating system Symbian for many years now. However, this report suggests that Nokia’s hold on this market might be slipping. Mobile internet visits made by Nokia devices in the second half of the year fell from about 57.3% to around 50.6% by the end of 2011.
