The Samsung Galaxy S II is easily one of the biggest smartphone success stories of 2011. Aside from becoming Sprint’s best-selling handset, helping Samsung sell 10 million units its first five months of limited availability in Europe and Asia, and totaling over 35 million units sold globally thus far, the handset was a trendsetter in a number of ways. Arriving for the first time in the United States on the Sprint 4G WiMAX network as the Epic Touch 4G, the handset delivers one of the larger screens in the entire 4G smartphone marketplace. Substantial RAM memory, video capture in 1080 P HD resolution, and a speedy processor all add to the high-end feature set.
But in a move that contrasts what we have come to expect from wireless carriers the last few years, Sprint has decided to lower the retail price of the handset to bargain-basement levels. Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Android smartphone is available for $49 with a standard new two-year activation and data plan. That handset comes in either white or black, and delivers the Gingerbread Android operating system. With popular preloads like Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter, and a better than average run time of 8.70 hours from a single charge, the Epic Touch 4G is ready to go out-of-the-box.
Average in size and weight compared to other 4G handsets, the Epic 4G Touch delivers 480 x 800 pixel resolution and 16 million color rendering to its 4.52 inch capacitive, multitouch Super AMOLED Plus display. Adding to the attractive Android feature set is a hardware package that is centered around an Exynos power pack, which includes a dual core Exynos central processing unit clocked at 1.2 GHz, and a Mali 400MP graphics processor. 16 GB of built-in storage and 1.0 GB of RAM memory round out the hardware profile.
Closet shutterbug’s will enjoy the 8.0 megapixel camcorder which provides video capture at 1080P HD resolution, comes equipped with an LED flash and video light, and provides panorama, preloaded scenes, smile detection and autofocus features. The front facing 2.0 megapixel chat cam also delivers video call support. DLNA wireless and HDMI wired video out options are also present.
