Samsung Galaxy Note 4G Blurs the Lines between Tablet and Smartphone

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note Android smartphone delivers all those features 4G shoppers have come to expect in a high-end handset. Available in Ceramic White or Carbon Blue color, the smartphone retails for $249 at select AT&T authorized retailers with a standard two-year commitment, and is exclusive currently to the AT&T 4G LTE system. And with a fast processor, large screen, healthy RAM allotment and dual camera package, that three figure retail price is definitely justified. But where the Samsung Galaxy Note separates itself from the rest of the 4G smartphone offerings is in screen size and stylus intelligence.

The Galaxy Note comes with a stylus that Samsung calls the S Pen, and this stylus effectively turns the 5.3 inch screen which is the largest in the 4G smartphone marketplace into a notepad and artist’s canvas. The S Pen can recognize your handwriting, and allows for doodling, drawing and creating art right on the capacitive, multitouch display. There is even an application which allows you to write out your text messages, making for a speedier process than using the onboard virtual keyboard.

That intelligent stylus ability and massive screen size deliver more of a tablet form function to the Galaxy Notethan that of a handset. And while the device is definitely larger and heavier than most 4G smartphones, at 5.78 x 3.27 x 0.38 inches (147 x 83 x 10 mm) and 6.45 ounces (183 g), Samsung has done a commendable job keeping the handset as light as possible.

That 5.3 inch Super AMOLED screen displays visuals in 16 million different colors, and offers an above average pixel density of 285 pixels per inch. That delivers an overall screen resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels for the Galaxy Note, and standard light and proximity sensors are built into the display. Samsung delivers 25% better run time than the 4G average from a single charge of the 2,500 mAh battery on board, at 10.0 hours.

A graphics dedicated microchip joins a Qualcomm MSM8660 central processor clocked at 1.5 GHz in the hardware package, and 1.0 GB of RAM memory is also on board. 16 GB of storage are built into the handset, and a microSD slot is available for storage expansion. A rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder with an aperture size of F2.6 and LED flash joins a front facing 2.0 megapixel chat cam in the camera combo. That rear device allows for 1080P HD resolution video recording at 30 frames per second. Popular online destinations Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter have been preloaded.
