Taxes and paperwork

Hi, guys,
I am a little bit troubled with ADC prize paperwork : looks like
foreign contestants have to get an ITIN from IRS in order to fill out
the form W9, which is not an easy task by itself (even for me, though
I live in Canada). Have anyone applied for the TIN, could you share
your experience?

Generally, the source of scholarships, fellowship grants, grants,
prizes, and awards is the residence of the payer regardless of who
actually disburses the funds. However, see Activities to be performed
outside the United States, later.


For example, payments for research or study in the United States made
by the United States, a noncorporate U.S. resident, or a domestic
corporation, are from U.S. sources. Similar payments from a foreign
government or foreign corporation are foreign source payments even
though the funds may be disbursed through a U.S. agent.


Payments made by an entity designated as a public international
organization under the International Organizations Immunities Act are
from foreign sources.
Activities to be performed outside the United States. Scholarships,
fellowship grants, targeted grants, and achievement awards received
by
nonresident aliens for activities performed, or to be performed,
outside the United States are not U.S. source income.


So , i guess , all we need is a W8 so that google can told the IRS
that we are foreigner. (no rebate to request , noTIN N° required)
and
we will be taxed localy depending from our country."

I agree with Alex.
I found about the same info in various forums about how to fill in W8
and when you need to fill it.

Hi,
today I have got an update from Google regarding the issue:

"if [you] are not US citizens then [you] need to fill out the W8BEN
with [your] name and address and [you] need to sign the W8 form. [You]
must also fill out the foreign certification form, there is not a need
to get a TIN for the US."
