I was thinking of a fairly simple app that I would find useful. My
wife frequently asks me if I checked my messages on my phone. The app
would generate daily reports of how often I checked my phone for
messages.

Here's an example report:
___________________________________
Message Check daily report for 12/04/07
Total Checks: 07
07:44:33 am
08:55:22 am
09:56:21 am
01:43:32 pm
08:02:35 pm

[send report via sms]
[send report via gmail]
___________________________________

* Users have the option of changing action to generate
"check" (opening of clamshell phone, pressing button to bring phone
out of standby, press particular external button)
* Users have ability to save daily reports for 1 week, 1 month etc.
* Users have abilty to password protect app? (in case employer needs
to monitor phone user)
* Users have ability to send reports via gmail or sms to their
boyfriend/girlfriend spouse, or other contacts.
* Users could have ability to compare to incoming messages/voice calls
for average time it took to respond.

I don't think it would be too complicated, but has a useful function.
I am not that proficient at coding, but have setup eclipse/android/
emulator and have written my first "hello world" app. Beyond that I
don't know where to begin. Let me know if you think you'd be
interested in helping develop this app.

Thanks!

Hi JC -

I just started with Android myself. I think the application you need
would hopefully be pretty straight forward, though I will not be
available to work on this. I have some other idea in mind.

But I am curious about something. If your wife has access to email,
then she might have access to Internet as well. In which case, she can
login to your phone online account and check all the calls, both
outgoing and incoming, not just the calls to voicemail.

Something to think about.

Good luck.
Prashanth.

This could be a useful app. Especially for someone like a manager with
employees who are on-call and required to check messages.
You should go through the Notepad tutorials if you haven't already.
I've found http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT9900056470.html a
really good guide so far.
Also, you can request tutorials from plusminus at anddev.org -really
good site. He may already have a simple networking tutorial.

Dear JC,

Your idea sounds very promising and could indeed fit very well into
the general framework we are trying to build. At OpenIntents, we try
to provide open interfaces to let different Android applications work
together well.

A global log ability could be extended to log all kind of activities
of a user that one requires. If you wish, it could log not only how
often you checked for messages, but using location based services one
could log how long one is at work, how often you visit your grandma,
or how many miles you walk per week (speed < a couple miles per hour).

If you are interested in our project, have a look at our developer
page and discussion group:
http://code.google.com/p/openintents/
http://groups.google.com/group/openintents

Hope to see you soon at the project,
Peli
