I've configured the proxy settings on the emulator and I'm able to
browse the web, no problem. However, when I try to set up a Google
account through Settings > Accounts & sync, it fails with "Can't
establish a reliable data connection to the server".

Is this a known issue? Do I need to open the firewall on any specific
way for the emulator?

Thanks,
-JD

Can you browse with https://  as well ?

To receive messages or use google talk you also need to be able to connect to port 5228 (
that's outgoing, from emulator to google ).

Thanks for your response Costin. I can login to Gmail through https, although I do see a certificate dialog first. Maybe that is the problem, but I should add that I installed the emulator at home where there is no proxy and following the same procedure I was able to create the account with no issues.

Certificate dialog may mean your firewall/proxy is doing something 'funny', like decoding the SSL as a MITM. I don't think you'll be able to register or use messaging if this is the case.

This is a little roundabout but I think it will work for you.

Run something like Charles proxy while trying to connect with the emulator to find the https subdomain and domain. Visit that URL manually in the emulators browser and accept the invalid cart. Then you should be fine to register.

I tried your suggestion Abraham using Fiddler. I can see all the https traffic coming from the web browser, but nothing when I try to sign in through "Accounts & sync". Maps doesn't work either. Maybe the components in GoogleAPIs don't use the proxy settings correctly?
