Sure, but you'll lose the ability to use Git in your source tree,
including running 'repo sync' to get more recent code. I don't
think there's anything in the build itself that depends on running
Git, but there could be.
Short term that might be okay for you but long term you simply need
more disk. Given what it takes in terms of CPU and RAM to build AOSP,
a few extra tens of gigabytes of disk shouldn't be impossible.
You can also save some space (not sure how much) by using the --shallow
option of 'repo init' and/or the -c option of 'repo sync'. Using them at
this point won't do much good though; you'd have to wipe everything and
start from the beginning.
