Creating a filter on the list views

Sorry for the loaded question but I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to make the listviews filterable. Does anyone have an example or know where I can see some source for how to implement this? I keep assuming it needs to go in the HeaderFooterListAdapter, but no matter what I do I can't get anything to work.
