PRESS RELEASE

Date of Incident:  09/25/2020

Time:  7:52 PM

Location:  Route 206 / Brighton Road

Type of Incident:    Pedestrian Accident

The Andover Township Police Department is investigating the cause of an accident which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.  John A Nordmeyer Jr., age 88 of Sparta, was struck and killed along Route 206 in Andover Township near the intersection of Brighton Road Friday evening.  Nordmeyer had been operating a 2009 Chevy Malibu when he exited the vehicle and began walking along Route 206.  It is believed he exited his vehicle to remove debris from the roadway when he struck by a white Acura traveling northbound.

Nordmeyer was pronounced dead at the scene and the road remained closed for approximately 6 hours.  The accident remains under investigation by the Andover Township Police Department, NJSP Fatal Accident Unit and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.   There may have been an encounter in which Nordmeyer spoke with another party operating a Ford Ranger pickup just prior to the accident.  We are asking the subject to contact the Andover Township Police Department Detective Bureau at 973-383-5544.  There are no pending criminal charges surrounding this crash investigation.  The Andover Township Fire Department, Andover Boro Fire Department and Lakeland Emergency Squad assisted at the scene.

Please note that all individuals who are charged with a criminal offense are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
