Ancient Bone Surgery at Kuelap Fortress, Peru
A team of researchers studied two skeletons dated at 800-1535 CE at the site of Kuelap in Peru. Both had holes drilled in their legs. The placement and depth of the holes suggest this was done to relieve pressure from infection or injury, releasing built up fluids. The research is published in the International Journal of Paleopathology
