---------------------------------

The International [Digital] Dura-Europos Archive (IDEA) is guided by the ambition that Linked Open Data (LOD) methods can transform colonially-entangled collections of artifacts and archives into intergenerational and intercultural learning laboratories where students, professionals, and stakeholder communities worldwide can grapple together more inclusively with the unintended legacies (ie. inequities in access, epistemic biases) of archaeology’s problematic past while also de-siloing learned insights from disparate disciplines that interpret evidence surfaced in excavations (Archaeology, Art History, Classics, Near Eastern Languages and Literatures, Religious Studies, etc.). To address the fragmentation of contextually-related collections, siloed disciplinary expertise, and long-standing access inequities descendant of early excavations, IDEA is creating the first multilingual, inter-institutional register of content related to this important archaeological site in the form of a Linked Open Data (LOD) dataset curated through interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement with Syrian communities. Central to the project's approach is the creative use of the Wikidata ecosystem.
To help in bringing about the robust modeling of this important cultural heritage dataset, the IDEA Team has recently developed a preliminary data model for the representation of historical people in Wikidata, and we could benefit from feedback and discussion with LOD experts who are concerned with analogous content. While the model is written specifically for persons relevant to Dura-Europos (Syria), many of the statements (and thorny considerations) will be relevant to the representation of ancient figures more generally. Our model may provide a useful starting place for building consensus and semi-standardization of high-quality modeling of ancient persons in WD. Members of the IDEA Team invite asynchronous feedback directly on the linked doc prior to the meeting; we will speak briefly about the development of the model and highlight a few thorny areas where we would appreciate specific feedback, then we will open the floor for free-form discussion.
