27) Tips from Van Atta’s on Timing Your Planting
Phenology is the study of the timing of recurring biological phenomena and their relationship to the weather. Here is some phenological gardening advice we've collected over time, and found on line. Please realize that even the best old wives tales and old farmers hints can be destroyed by a poorly timed frost or freeze, so be aware of the daily weather forecasts and plan and cover accordingly.
*Plant peas when the forsythia and daffodils are blooming.
*Plant potatoes when the 1st dandelion blooms.
*Plant, beets, carrots, cold crops, lettuce and spinach when lilac is in first leaf.
*Plant beans, cucumbers and squash when lilac is in full bloom.
*Plant tomatoes when lily-of-the-valley are in full bloom.
*Plant corn when apple blossoms start to fall.
*Seed your morning glories when maple leaves are full size.
*Treat for Japanese beetles when morning glory vines start to climb.
*Treat for Eastern tent caterpillars when crab apples start to bloom.
