2) Active Neighboring Café – Creating a Safe Neighborhood

Creating a Safe Neighborhood is the focus of our next Active Neighboring Café. Join us to hear what neighbors are doing to create an environment on their block or street that discourages anti-social and even criminal behaviors. Gather ideas for engaging newcomers and old-timers in your neighborhood and linking them to activities, resources, and one another (the ‘Neighborhood Ladder of Engagement’). Learn about new and old communication tools, (e.g., Localblox) for sharing information and building strong connections. Hear from Officer Rich Ballor about LPD tools and resources. 4) Urban Gardener Certification Program
Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00pm, March 6, March 20, April 10, April 24, May 8, May 22, June 5, June 19
The Urban Gardener Certification program features 8 sessions of instruction in basic yard & greenhouse gardening skills appropriate for high density, small lot neighborhoods such as those on Lansing’s Eastside and the raised beds in Hunter Park GardenHouse. Participants will have hands-on instruction as we plant and care for a garden together over the length of the program. The course involves eight classes in the GardenHouse and the Allen Neighborhood Center. This program is intended for beginner-intermediate gardeners. (For advanced gardeners, please watch for our Advanced Urban Gardener Series held in the fall.)
Applicants to the Urban Gardening Certification Program agree to:
• Commit to attending at least 7 of the 8 classes.
• Commit to 40 hours of volunteer staffing at the Hunter Park Community GardenHouse or, with advanced approval, at Eastside community gardening projects (with the bulk of the hours at the Hunter Park GardenHouse).
• Commit to assist, as time and energy allow, other gardeners on one’s facing block.
• Pay materials cost of $20/30/40*, due no later than at first class meeting.
*Enrollment space is limited to 25 with preference given to Eastside residents. Cost of the class is $20 for 48912 residents, $30 for Lansing residents, and $40 for non-Lansing residents.

5) Everybody Eats: Cultivating Food Democracy
February 10th – 11th, 2012 at Pattengill Middle School, Lansing, Michigan
Lansing’s third annual local food system conference, “Everybody Eats: Cultivating Food Democracy,” will begin on Friday, February 10th with a keynote by Katherine Kelly, founder and Executive Director of Cultivate Kansas City, at 7:30 p.m. in Lansing. The conference will continue Saturday, February 11th at 8:30 a.m. with more than 20 workshops and a luncheon keynote address by Malik Yakini, Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network. “Everybody Eats” builds on earlier local food system conferences and will bring people together to explore opportunities for optimizing local resources, supporting local farmers and businesses, addressing health, hunger and food sovereignty issues in our community.
The overall theme of this year’s conference is food democracy. This is a topic of critical importance to all citizens including our elected officials, our health policy teams, and our area businesses. As interests and approaches to food and farming proliferate, there is a need to take stock of the process and to critically reflect on what has been happening, individually and collectively. Has it been an inclusive process? Are all the voices within the food system being heard? Can people throughout the food system make a decent living? In short, are we moving toward greater self-reliance and deeper food security - and what do such things look like? These are among the topics that will be discussed.
“Everybody Eats” expects an attendance of 300 growers, restaurateurs, cooks, grocers, processors, distributors, emergency food providers, institutional food preparers and interested citizens. All Lansing area residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Registration is $15. This event is being sponsored by the Capital Region Community Foundation, MSU Agro-Environmental Justice Initiative, South Lansing Community Development Association, Urbandale Farm, Northwest Initiative, Allen Neighborhood Center, Ingham County Land Bank, Michigan State University Extension, and the Garden Project of the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Frost Fest12 is Lansing’s
only winter celebration! Frost Fest will take place on Saturday, February 18
from 6:00 p.m. until mid-night on the 200 S. Block of Washington Sq. We’ll be serving
up delicious microbrews, great live music and plenty of frosty entertainment in
a heated tent.
Tickets are $12 in advance, or $15 at the door for those 21 and older

Part 1 – Start here: Get the facts
A talk by Tom Weisskopf, Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Michigan.
The history of the policies that fed financial excesses, engineered inequality, and enabled the collapse reaches back as far as the Great Depression. Professor Weisskopf will tell the eye-opening story of what happened to the American economy and why, and point a way forward. A moderated question and answer period will follow the talk.
Part 2 – Now it’s your turn: Put the facts to work
A workshop on engagement facilitated by Jocelyn Benson, Associate Professor of Law and Associate Director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, Wayne State University, founder and director of the Michigan Center for Election Law and Administration, and Democratic candidate for Secretary of State in 2010.
Volunteers will be needed for registering people at the door, staffing the refreshment table, set-up (including charts on easels, video & mike equipment), clean-up, and distributing and collecting question cards from audience. If anyone has videotaping capability, we would appreciate their help.

19) Creative Tots: Art Exploration for Preschoolers (from REACH)
We still have room! Make art at REACH & keep the mess
away from home! Creative Tots sessions are for children ages 2-5 and a parent
or guardian. Tots play and learn to be creative using tactile materials,
small and large motor skills, and art supplies. They make anything from puppets
to paintings to sculptures. It is a great introduction to the arts for your
child. And, a way for you both to have fun and learn together.

The MSU chapter of Graduate Women in Science hosts a community book
club as an outreach activity, and hopes to involve people of the Greater
Lansing Area in a book club for anyone interested (i.e. not just

22) Improving Your Garden Planning Using Google Earth & SketchUp

Learn how to utilize Google Earth and Google SketchUp to plan your garden quicker and more precisely than with pencil and paper. The two programs are free from Google and can be run on most computers. The workshop will take you through the steps from start to finish, while teaching you all the basics you need to know along the way. Handouts will be provided illustrating each step for you to follow along throughout the workshop. Participants are more than welcome to bring their personal laptops to follow along as well. The Lansing's Eastside Neighborhood Organization's 32nd Annual Spring Souper is Saturday, March 3, 2012, 4-7 pm, at Pattengill Middle School 626 Marshall Street Lansing Michigan 48912. Tickets are $5 per person, $3 Children under 14, Families of 4 or more $18.
You can enjoy wonderful soups of all types, yummy desserts and much more. We also will have an Adult and Kids only raffles along will a silent and live auction. There will be special local celebrity soup servers as well.

24) Request from League of MI Bicyclists
LMB is extremely pleased that the recently published Michigan
State Rail Plan makes clear recommendations that bicycles need to be
accommodated on Michigan
passenger trains. LMB thanks the Michigan Department of Transportation for
recognizing this need. We also thank all of our supporters who responded to our
call to submit comments to the rail plan this past year.
We now are asking for your help again to ensure that these
recommendations are acted on promptly. Please sign our petition urging Amtrak
to implement roll-on bicycle service on all Michigan service routes as they have already
done in other states.

25) Knee High Naturalist at Fenner- Ongoing
“Knee High Naturalist” runs every Wednesday from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm and every Thursday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Parents are encouraged to bring their children between ages 2 and 5 for an exciting playgroup featuring a different nature theme each week that will be explored with a hike, crafts, and a story. The cost is $5 per child.
The first Saturday of each month, join our resident librarian from 1:00 pm-2:00 pm for “Nature Story Hour”. Families are welcome to join us for a nature story geared towards 4-6 year olds followed by a craft and video. Cost is free.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, as space is limited for some programs.

26) REACH Teen Studio Community Art Projects, or CAPs, will work with 15 to 20 Lansing Area teenagers and local artists to design and fabricate public art for 5 or more selected places around Lansing. Using three hour weekly teen studio after school sessions at REACH Studio from October 2011 – June 2012, the teens will meet with Lansing area artists and solicit ideas for, choose, design and implement community art projects creating place-making art around Lansing. 29) LPD ON LINE CRIME REPORTING
LPD launched "Online Crime Reporting " capabilities. The new system offers Lansing citizens another option to report specific, non-emergency crimes that do not require an immediate police response and is designed to provide citizens with more convenience in filing crime reports. The system can be accessed by the public on LPD's website www.lansingpolice.com and is available 24/7.
Certain criteria must be met for the use of the online crime reporting system:
• The incident must be non-emergency (does not require immediate police response)
• The reporting party must be at least 17 years of age.
• No known suspect(s) or evidence.
• Not involve firearms/weapons.
• Not traffic crash-related.
Crimes that are eligible for reporting online include:
Burglary
Fraud
Gasoline Drive-off
Harassment
Identity Theft
Lost Property
Shop Lifting
Theft
Vandalism
Vehicle Burglary

If you have any information about a crime in the City of Lansing, you can send an anonymous text message to 847411, beginning the message with LPD517, then leaving the text. You can also a message with Crime Stoppers at 483-STOP. Thank you for being vigilant in getting criminals off the street!
