1)    Energy Efficient Electric Appliances Workshop

A ‘Restoration Works’ Tour and Tutorial where home renovation, neighborhood revitalization and green technologies meet.

Saturday, Mar. 31, 10-11:30am; at 1619 E. Kalamazoo St.

Electric appliances are a big part of our life. Machines like air conditioners and dehumidifiers are important for keeping our homes healthy and comfortable. But, running these appliances takes energy, and energy costs money.

Using inefficient and damaged appliances in the home is expensive. Join us as we feature Sean Huberty, Lead Faculty for LCC’s Alternative Energy Engineering Technology program, for an interesting and fun presentation on energy monitors and energy efficient electric appliances in your home.

You may be eligible to receive a free energy monitor (Kill A Watt Gauge) for attending!

Look for all our exciting fall tutorials at www.restorationworks.org.

2)    In the Hunter Park GardenHouse……

YSC's Garden-in-a-Box project, now accepting applications

This year's round of Garden-in-a-Box kits will soon be coming to the neighborhood! What is a Garden-in-a-Box? It's a 2'x2'x11' cedar garden box that is delivered, filled with soil, and planted with choice vegetables for free by the Youth Service Corps.  Though these dimensions sound small, a number of last year's recipients agreed that it is a manageable size for inexperienced gardeners who want to get started growing their own food. We have a limited number of these boxes available, but limited or low-income Eastside neighbors living within walking distance of the park are encouraged to apply. To apply for a box, please complete an application by May 31st (available on-line, in the GardenHouse, and at Allen Neighborhood Center) and send to ANC. For more information, contact Rita O'Brien: 999-3910 or ri...@allenneighborhoodcenter.org

Enrollment will open to new 48912 members on April 16, will open to returning 48912 members on April 30, and will open to non-48912 residents on May 7 . The program is filled on a first come, first served basis, so hurry up and fill out an application when they are open to you. We have a blast each year on this walk; a wonderful time is guaranteed!  To sign up for Allen Neighborhood Center’s team go to: http:www.komenmidmichigan.org/ - click on register today, then click on join existing team and type in Allen Neighborhood Center!  Please consider sponsoring a neighbor.  We have many who would like to walk but can’t afford the $20.

5) Have a Little Time and Want to Make a Difference in the Neighborhood?

Youth Gardening Volunteers Needed

The Hunter Park GardenHouse youth program is in need of reliable, kid-loving volunteers to assist during the KidsTime and Youth Service Corps programs, as well as help with lesson planning and administrative tasks.  Kidstime  meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm and Youth Service Corps meets the same time on Wednesdays.  If behind the scenes work is more to your liking, we can accommodate varying schedules.

Though we are seeking volunteers for the remainder of the school year, we will continue programming through the summer.  Summer youth programs run from 10-11 am, Monday – Friday.  Our Youth Service Corps members (young teens) will be resurrecting their Garden-in-a-Box project this summer and continuing their Edible Park project (planting and tending fruit trees, bushes, etc.).  The Kidstime participants (6-11 year olds) will be learning all about plants and their nutritional value, and also enjoying active games. If you have a couple of hours/week available and are interested in introducing young people to the joys of digging in the dirt, contact Rita at 999-3910 or ri...@allenneighborhoodcenter.org.

22) WierdWiwwwwWierllll - Michigan Weather has Outdone Itself This Year!

The Word from Van Atta’s

Empty Spots

First almost 90, then in the 20's...there's been some serious deviations from the norm lately with weather. We're getting a lot of questions about what might have been damaged or what to do to protect your plants from future freezes, so let's go over some of that.

If you didn't do anything to protect your plants when the temperature dropped, it may take up to two or three days to know if there was cold damage. You may lose the flowers on your magnolia, forsythia or other flowering trees and shrubs immediately, or depending on the level of protection in your yard, they could be ok. Fruiting trees could have suffered damage if the bud or blossom was frozen, but you may not be able to tell until later, either. Black foliage is an indication of cell tissue damage, but you should probably wait to prune until later in the spring.

For future freezes, constant overhead watering on the night of the freeze can help protect your plants, as can air movement from fans if you have some very special plants to protect, or covering with frost blanket, sheets or other fabric.  The freeze will not kill most hardy plants, but it can and will prevent many things from flowering and fruiting later, and may cause damage that will need to be pruned later. Any annual, tropical and vegetable plants shouldn't be outside yet, unless you're only putting them out when it's warm (above 60 or more depending on the plant) and bringing them back into protection when it drops below that temperature.

Try not to worry, there's nothing we can do to stop Mother Nature and her whims. Just enjoy the nice weather when it's here and do what you can to protect some plants when it's seasonal, and as always, call us with your questions and we'll do our best to help.

23) Leaves, Grass Clippings, Yard Waste

Residents can begin setting out leaves, grass clippings and other yard waste materials at the curbside on a weekly basis beginning the week of April 2, 2012.  The Good Friday holiday will not interrupt the collection schedule.  Materials must be placed on the curb on the normal service day for recycling and city trash collection.

Yard waste should be placed in paper bags.  Brush and tree trimmings must be less than 4 feet in length and less than 2 inches in diameter and bundled with string or twine.  All bags and bundles must weigh 30 pounds or less.

Residents may NOT use City trash or other plastic bags or trash carts for yard waste removal.  Also, due to health and safety concerns, the use of rigid containers to collect yard waste is not allowed.  Disposal of beehives or wasp nests in yard waste is prohibited, as they are a danger to our yard waste collection staff.

Every Sunday, 12:30-1:30pm at the Hunter Park GardenHouse

Are you suffering ‘gardener’s withdrawal’?  Missing the smell of green and growing things as you trudge across last year’s back yard vegetable garden, now covered with crunchy snow?  Come join us any (and every) Sunday at the GardenHouse to swap gardening stories, drink in the smell of soil and green plants, share ideas, tips, and occasionally seeds and plants.  Gardeners of any level of experience or skill are invited to wander on over for relaxed and informal conversations, leaf through our seed catalogues, and enjoy a cup of tea.  RSVP with Rita at ri...@allenneighborhoodcenter.org or 517-999-3910.

2012 Weekly Warm Up
The Community Partners in Health’s 2012 Winter Warm-Up is an entirely FREE program which offers resources for the development of positive habits of physical activity and healthy eating within one’s daily routine. The 8-week program provides tools, information and the support-network for you to do just that – all within your own community! Experts say identifying a positive routine and sticking with it for 21 days will initiate a “habit.” Why not make health and wellness your best new habit of 2012? The Community Partners in Health believe by working together we can and will move mid-Michigan communities toward being the healthiest in Michigan!
