This Week’s Reason for Keeping Eastern High School Open
International Baccalaureate Program - Eastern is one of only two (2) Michigan high schools certified for the preK-12th Grade Schools Pathways Program. That has enabled Eastern to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Program to high-achieving juniors and seniors. It provides challenging, college level courses not available in the regular high school curriculum. The popularity of Eastern’s IB program has grown steadily to the point where more than 700 students, including 22 out-of-district students, currently are enrolled in at least one of these advanced courses.
If Eastern were to be closed, IB officials have indicated it could be a complicated, lengthy, and possibly costly process to train all staff new to the IB requirements in order to certify Everett or Sexton for this project. In addition, taking Eastern off-line would jeopardize continuation of the fledgling IB programs at two of Eastern’s feeder schools (Post Oak Elementary School and Pattengill Middle School).
Please share this information with family, friends, neighbors and school board members. School Board members can be reached by calling Karen Potter at 517-755-1005 or emailing her at Karen....@lansingschools.net.

3) In the Hunter Park GardenHouse……
YSC's Garden-in-a-Box project, now accepting applications
This year's round of Garden-in-a-Box kits will soon be coming to the neighborhood! What is a Garden-in-a-Box? It's a 2'x2'x11' cedar garden box that is delivered, filled with soil, and planted with choice vegetables for free by the Youth Service Corps. Though these dimensions sound small, a number of last year's recipients agreed that it is a manageable size for inexperienced gardeners who want to get started growing their own food. We have a limited number of these boxes available, but limited or low-income Eastside neighbors living within walking distance of the park are encouraged to apply. To apply for a box, please complete an application by May 31st (available on-line, in the GardenHouse, and at Allen Neighborhood Center) and send to ANC. For more information, contact Rita O'Brien: 999-3910 or ri...@allenneighborhoodcenter.org
