Good Morning,

I am drafting this month's agenda for our meeting scheduled for November 30th, 7:00PM. As always, please let me know if there are additional items you would like to add.

Since most of our meetings have been addressing issues of mental health support and safety for our kiddos, I'm excited to share that this month we will look at some movement forward on these, yay!

DRAFT AGENDA

  1. Safe Passage Expansion & Safe Routes
  • Council combined the Safe Routes Expansion  (see resolution in support) and the Safe Passage Expansion, which we have discussed and wanted to see move forward.
    • You can find the Committee Report on the combined legislation, B24-066, here
    • There are a few items that I think we should comment on before the final markup (scheduled around Dec 6th, I think):
      1. Initial Action Plans will only address 'zones' around schools - these should expand to larger walkshed and bikeshed areas if we propose ¼ mi. and ½ mi. respectively, this would pretty much cover all of W1, given the proximity of schools to one another. It also addresses the issue raised in Peter's commission area about creating safe bike routes to/from schools.
      2. The open streets model for closing off streets around schools has a very different implication for dense, high-volume traffic areas like Columbia Heights than schools in less trafficked areas. It's worth discussing what that could look like/needs.
      3. Establishing a Safe Passage office has led to questions of who should have oversight. Right now, it 'lives' with the Deputy Mayor of Education. Should it stay within their purview/authority?
  1. UPDATE: Under this committee, we have been pushing for onsite mental health and wellness programs at Mt. Pleasant library and trauma-informed training for the staff. DBH has agreed to bring in several onsite opportunities for residents and families and training for trauma-informed services and mental health first aid.  I consider this a big win for our committee but, more importantly, our community.
  1. A budget request letter has been sent to DPR (attached). Our ANC is meeting again in Dec, so we may want to add a letter in for DBH services and also in support of some budget asks from coalitions supporting OST and school-based mental health (SBMH)

Lots to cover, but we will take December off before jumping back in January.

Best,

C
