Ernest Hemingway is one of my favorite writers. He's surely influenced my sparse style. If it doesn't move the story along ... get rid of it! He also offered me a fool-proof method to break writer's block.
I recently re-read A Moveable Feast. a fascinating account of his early years in Paris and beyond. It re-introduced me to one of the all-time best quotes about creating content, and I wanted to share it with you. Hemingway writes about his sure-fire way of breaking through writer's block:
The way this works for me is simple. There is so much that is untrue on the internet, and specifically in the marketing world. Many of my blog posts come from thinking, "That is just not right. Here is what is true to me."
Often, I'll just write down a bare idea as a headline in WordPress to be considered later. If you look at the recent videos I've published on YouTube, they all emanate from just saying something true to me on that day.
I have a hybrid approach. I often start blog posts with "one true sentence," but when it comes to a book, I definitely need an outline to guide me. I don't have the luxury of being a professional writer with loads of time to let a book work itself into being. I'm a busy guy and start with at least a roadmap of where I'm going.
When Rasa answers a question, those answers may contain several lengthy sentences. This can be difficult to read. It would be nice, if we could break these paragraphs up and send the individual sentences to the user, in a delayed manner.
In a banner I'm designing for, I have some space issues. Wanted to know if it is OK to break a single line into two lines? When trying out google translator I got a bit confused when I break lines because there was a change in word and auto capitalization. Would be great if some one could clear my doubts, because I do not want the viewers to get annoyed seeing random capitalization and poor language. Also do not want to piss off my client.
In terms of grammar, Chinese also uses punctuation marks to delimit fragments and sentences, so a line break usually doesn't indicate a new sentence. The only hard rule is that most punctuation marks should not begin lines. Most word processing software should enforce this for you.
After this it's a stylistic question. It's true in Chinese, just as it is in English, that line breaks introduces a pause. It's an effect that poetry often takes advantage of. Usually it's bad to pause in the middle of a word, and since Chinese words are made up of one to many characters, you need someone that understands Chinese to identify the words and avoid breaking them. In your example sentence, they are:
But really, these are all design decisions, which don't occur in a vacuum. You need to go back to your client and ask what they would like. Maybe they value the shape of the text, even if it means breaking in the middle of a word. Maybe they don't want line breaks at all, even if the text must be resized. Maybe they just don't care.
To the best of my knowledge, breaking up sentences into separate lines is fine, but you should not do so in a way that breaks up linked characters (e.g. in your example, 变 and 得). For example, in the ending of a Hong Kong commercial about cervical cancer prevention, we see the text:
(The characters in the commercial are traditional, but I am using their simplified equivalents for convenience.) The two clauses are clearly linked together as a phrase or sentence, but they appear on separate lines. A new line does not mean a new sentence here.
Over spring break i had a ton of fun. Here are some things i did. First I went to Illinois to visit my Grandma. Then my Dad my brother and I traveled home. The next day we went to a movie it was Mr.Peabody and Sherman. Then i traveled up to tropical Minnesota. We (my mom my bro and i ) visited my aunt. That is what i did over break!
I had a awesome spring break at home. I played with some of my moms daycare kids like doing puzzles and watching movies. I also played my DSI XL with my brother inside my closet. One of the last things I did was watch the Iowa state game on TV in my living room. I had a lot of fun at home during spring break.
I loved my week off! I watched Iowa State play against North Carolina State in the second round in the NCAA Tournament. Then, my brother and I played basketball throughout the week. On the final weekend, I volunteered at Tender Years Daycare. I did have a fun break but I missed hanging out with some of my friends.
I had a really fun break. I started to baby-proof the house by adding clips to the plugs and locks to closets. Then I went to my aunt Linda and uncle Bill's house that is just 90 acres of forest and bean field, and went antler-looking but only found one. Then we had my cousins Jamie's birthday. That was my spring break!
My spring break was really fun! One thing I did was my Grandma came down and we played a really fun card game and monopoly a lot. Another thing I did was sleep in and watch T.V. I also had a lot of fun exploring with my sister and my friends. That's what I did over spring break!
I had some fun things this spring break.The first 3 days of spring break was fun! I went over to my friend's house,he had a birthday party we played games and watched some movies.Then I went to watch the Son of God(But I wanted to watch Need For Speed),My friends had tears but i was scared by all the thing happening. One of my friends from my old school in Johnston came to spend time with me.Because my sister had her friend over.Mostly it was boring at home but i still missed school and I'm glad I'm back!
on Spring break I went to Iowa city with my sister, cousins, grandma, aunt , and mom. when we got I went straight to the bookstore. Then we went to the food court to have lunch. Then we went to the children's museum. inside there was tons of cool room like a grocery store, pizzarea ,and many others. Finally we got to go ice skating for the first time!
What did over break was I went to the Blank Park Zoo which was cool because there were some new things. My sister took me to the Science Center and I liked that because we got to go into the IMAX theatre. On the first weekend of spring break my cousins came to see my last show of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. We watched movies that night and played games. That week of spring break I went to my grandparent's house for a couple of days and since my cousins live in a town almost connected to my Grandparent's town they came to. My sister came home for break, but unfortunately had to go back to Cedar Falls for classes. I had a good break though and had did tons of stuff. That is what I did over break!
Over my spring break I did fun things with my friends and family,On Monday I went to my friends house and we played lots of fun games. On Wednesday Me my dad and my sister traveled down to Pella Iowa, While we were there we took a tour of a windmill. On Thursday we Went to the Omaha Zoo, We saw lots of cool animals like beavers,sharks,jellyfish,and bats.This is what I did over my spring break.
I really enjoyed spring break! First I went to my baseball tryouts to pitch some baseballs and to see what team you got on (I got on the red sox). Then I went to adventurland inn to stay at a hotel and swim for a while and I could play in the arcade it was awesome. Last of all I went to my uncles house to play with cousin and we played the Wii and we watched Netflix for a couple of hours untell I had to leave but any it was fun! I guess my spring break was really fun now that I think about it I guess I did have a good spring break.
First of all, Iowa had to play Tennessee and ISU had to play North Carolina Central, nobody even knew they were a team. Second, it has been a very emotional month for Iowa, because Patrick,(Fran's son) is battling a brain tumor. ISU playing bad teams to get to the Sweet Sixteen proves nothing.
over spring break was great but the first Friday and Saturday where horrible me and my mom couldn't stop coughing and it hurt but after that the rest of the week was awesome we finally got situated in the new house so now we actually sit ate the table together for dinner.so really have been spending time with my family, watching tv/movies , going places. frome @nthony
There was many things I enjoyed over spring break, but here are just a few things I did. I have been helping my Grandma & Grandpa move into their nursing home lately. We packed up boxes and had pizza for lunch. It was a fun time. I have also been working on the four hours for the volunteering work. I am working at a nursing home. I have been serving food and helping set up for dinner. It was super cool beans that I could help out.
Over spring break did many things. I went to my grandpa's house, and he lives on a farm with sheep.I helped him take care of the new baby lambs, and the mommy sheep. Also when we had time where we weren't taking care of sheep we went to the movie "Mr.Peabody, and Sherman." We also went to the "Prairie Heritage Center", and leaned about the heritage of Sutherland IA. I also got to spend more time with my family like my aunt,uncle, and baby cousin, and I also saw my Great Grandpa, and Grandma. I had a fun last week, and those are just a few thing's I did.
I had a amazing spring brick.I went to the movies and had a good time.I played kickball with my brother with some friends,I went to the mall.My favorite was i went to incredible pizza and I had an amazing time .Thats what I did during my awsome spring brick.
I did many things over break! First is that I went to Arizona some things that i did there was that I went horse back riding, hiking, shopping, and I swam in a pool a lot. When I got back I had a sleepover with my friend! On Friday I went to a Iowa state party at my neighbors house. Then the next day my family and I celebrated my sisters birthday!! I really enjoyed my spring break!
