Minchin uses dynamics and tempo to create contrast in this song. The piece begins with a crescendo building through the whole of the first section to reflect the lyrics, 'my heart is pounding, my eyes are burning' . The crescendo is also complimented by an accelerando creating a sense of building tension and anxiety in the character. Once the climax is reached there is a sudden drop to a piano dynamic and much slower tempo which continues throughout the rest of the piece. The lyric at the start of the new section is 'Quiet' and this is literally created by the quiet dynamics.Minchin also uses a change in texture to further emphasise the change in mood from one of tension to calm here. In the first section the texture is thick and full with percussion, strings and piano forming the accompaniment. However, after the climax, solo piano forms a sparse accompaniment and this allows for silence between the vocal phrases and again creates literal, musical representations of 'quiet'.

The books were the residue of a library that he hadgathered at Padua when, twenty years before, he hadfilled the chair of neo-Latin in that university. Afterwardhe had traveled much for scientific purposes, hadbeen called successively to the institute of higher learningin Florence, to the University of Naples, and finallythe Ministry had solicited his presence in Rome, at theSapienza, creating a chair especially for him, and offeringhim high emoluments.
But let us leave Lowenstein in peace in distant Norwayand turn our attention entirely to our illustriouscompatriot. And, to begin with, upon the afternoonin which Pomponio is opening the case of books, theProfessor was but forty, though looking much older.
He was slightly stoop-shouldered and his ampleforehead was seamed with premature wrinkles; hisnear-sighted eyes were hidden behind glasses, and weregenerally half-closed, like those of a sleepy pussy-cat.His hair was thin and gray, his beard straggling, ill-caredfor, and nearly white. When he was young,Cernieri used to shave; but after it had happened severaltimes that he in his absent-mindedness had shavedbut half his face, and in that unusual condition hadentered his classes, he had thought best to leave wellenough alone. For the rest, the abstraction of professorsis proverbial, and need not be dwelt on here, though upon one occasion he had lost his train by persistingin looking through the whole station at Bolognafor a package he had in his hand.
Absent-minded people are generally very good-natured,[Pg 332]but our professor was an exception to therule. Ordinarily his lips were visited but by thescientific smile, made up of the superiority and commiserationwith which a learned man hears of theabsurdities committed by a brother colleague or theworld at large. In society, upon the rare occasions heforced himself to enter it, he preferred standing aside, avoiding women with horror, for he had not the faintestidea what to say to them, and the dear creaturesthemselves were equally at a loss what to say to him, though five or six years ago, owing to the scarcity ofhusbands in this vale of tears, more than one motherhad cast her eyes over him as a convenient parti forone of her daughters.
So at one time the Countess Pastori had been braveenough to invite him to dinner, hoping to make himmarry her second daughter, who had bad teeth andweak eyes, and had not found any one who would haveher. The young girl, properly coached, had receivedthe professor with marked deference, had preparedwith her own hand an exquisite peach marmalade, andhad even gone to the length of evincing interest inFinnish roots. Cernieri, however, did not take thebait; but, at once on guard, shortened his visit and wascareful never to set foot inside the doors of the Pastorimansion until the little Countess was betrothed to animporter of salt fish, who joined the cultivation ofsalmon with veneration for the titled nobility.
Every man has in the book of his life a secret pagethat a woman has made joyous or gloomy; as far asProfessor Cernieri was concerned, this page had remaineda blank. At least so his friends said; so wouldhe have answered himself had he been asked, and hewould have spoken in good faith. Absorbed as he wasin research, he forgot things near at hand. Oh, whymust he be made to remember the distant past?
But the Professor vigorously opposed the proposition. He wished it all to take place in his study, underhis own eyes. He wanted, after they were dusted, himself to put the books in a case ready for their reception. And Pomponio, resigned to the inevitable, continued taking them out, dusting them as best hecould, and handing them to his master, who, havingglanced at the title, put them in place.
But the Professor had anticipated him, and, half-dazed,was turning the letter round and round. Withoutdoubt it was a letter, and one of his own at that, still sealed, the stamp uncanceled, addressed in his ownwriting; the heavy, weighty writing of a man born tobe a cavaliere of many orders; a fellow of many societies. It was a too distinct hand, giving assurance thatthe letter should reach its destination if it had beenmailed!
