The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Canada is hiring a Curator of Korean Art & Culture, strong in the soft skills of collaborative and team-based work, and enthusiastic to
lead interpretation and presentation of the Korean collections for broad audiences. ROM’s collection of Korean Art & Culture is the largest in Canada with over 1,300 objects, and includes objects dating from the Neolithic period to the 21st century, from ceramics
and stoneware to prints, metalwork and technology, chronicling the history of Korea through its material and visual culture. It is strongest in pre-5th-century CE and post-18th-century objects. There are an additional 250 textiles housed in the Textiles and
Costume collection. A small permanent gallery is dedicated to Korea and offers opportunity for permanent collection rotation and small gallery programs.
Details:
The successful candidate will be an expert in their field and will also have an interest in contemporary Korean art and culture. They will enjoy working with diverse ROM audiences
including the Korean diaspora community, and global partners, particularly in Korea. The curator will be expected to propose and execute a major Korean exhibition within 5 years and encourage interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships. This is a 5-year
contract position, generously supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea. REQUIREMENTS: PhD or equivalent in Korean art history or related field; curatorial/exhibitions experience, Korean proficiency.
Compensation:
ROM curators are unionized. Candidates from Associate Curator level up to Senior Curator will be considered. The starting salary for associate curator at $68,487 CAD and for senior
curator at $119,109 CAD, indicating the salary range. ROM offers a generous benefits package.
