Subject: This Saturday: Scoping the Archives: Grassroots Archives and Practices in Asia

Dear friends and colleagues,

I'm writing to share an official invitation to an event I will be moderating as part of Melbourne Design Week at NGV on Saturday.

Considering archiving as community action, this event brings together QAMERAD (Indonesia) and Saluhan Collective (Naarm/Philippines) for a discussion exploring independent archival practices in the region, presented by Slow Burn Books.

Re-imagining archives as networks of solidarity, this conversation will discuss archival aesthetics, mobility, iteration and ways of building ethical strategies through independent and queer archiving practice. As we observe the politics of porosity and opacity in archival practice, together we ask: “How do we work adjacent to the institutional capture of grassroots archives?”

This discussion will be facilitated by Nikki Lam (Slow Burn Books and Hyphenated Projects), with Syarafina Vidyadhana (QAMERAD and Cahyati Press) and MJ Flamiano (Saluhan Collective).

When: Saturday 16 May, 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Where: Level 1 Gallery Space, Asian Art Collection, National Gallery of Victoria
Free, no booking required.

Looking forward to seeing you there! Please feel free to share this.

Warmest,
Nikki
