Dear AN4AA members,

I’m sure many of you will have seen the latest issue of the TAASA Review by now, given the likely overlap between our membership communities, but for those who haven’t yet had the chance I’m delighted to share the attached digital copy of the journal kindly made available to us by TAASA President, Jackie Menzies.

This is a special issue dedicated to the topic of “Art and Politics” and guest edited by AN4AA member Dr Alison Carroll, following the publication of her excellent book on Soviet Socialist Realism and Art in the Asia-Pacific (Routledge, 2025). Alison has worked with art in Asia for many years as a curator, writer, academic and administrator, was the founding Director of Asialink Arts from 1990-2010, and is now Senior Research Fellow at the VCA. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia and received the Emeritus Medal of the Australia Council for this work.

The issue features contributions from a number of AN4AA members, including Alison, myself, Abigail Bernal, Patriot Mukmin, Elena Dias-Jayasinha, and Lin Zhou, as well as papers by friends of the network John Michael Swinbank, Judith Snodgrass, Carol Cains, and Shen Jiawei.

The TAASA Review has been published quarterly since the foundation of The Asian Arts Society of Australia in 1991. It offers contributions by experts, collectors, and curators on all aspects of Asian arts, as well as keeping readers in touch with current exhibitions and events. Access to the TAASA Review (including online access to all back copies) is through TAASA membership which also allows you to enjoy TAASA’s program of talks and events. Joining after 1 July means you only pay for half the normal membership rate for 2025 while student membership of TAASA is also heavily discounted. See www.taasa.org.au for more information.

Happy reading!

Best wishes,

Alex
