SPATIAL ROOM NO. 2 - PAUL BAI SOLO EXHIBITION
Paul Bai
Spatial Room No. 2 Paul Bai's exhibition design draws inspiration from the concept of a "spatial room," referencing German artist Erich Buchholz’s painted Berlin studio from 1922. While Buchholz pioneered the integration of abstract art and architecture, Bai shifts the focus to something more elusive—'in-between' moments that are conceptual, physical, and experiential.
The exhibition features orange paintings, created with watercolour and acrylic, that evoke the colours of sunrise and sunset, symbolising the East and West. Through visual ambiguity, these works challenge perceptions of time and space. Bai suggests that concepts like sunrise and sunset, or East and West, are not absolute realities but subjective constructs, reflecting on the artificial boundaries we impose and the fluid, continuous experience of existing "in-between."
Paul Bai’s artistic practice has been widely exhibited both across Australia and internationally, with his works featured at renowned institutions such as the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Museum of Brisbane, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the Singapore Art Museum. Born in Tianjin, China, Bai is currently based in Brisbane, where he lectures in painting at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University.
