Dear colleagues,
If you are in Melbourne, please join us next Tuesday for an informal presentation by Etan Creative Vision Art Studio, a Taiwan-based collective from the Indigenous Paiwan Ravar tribe.
Date and time: Tuesday, 15 October 2024, 10.00 – 11.30 am
Venue: Research Lounge, Level 5, Arts West Building 148, The University of Melbourne
Etan Pavavalung will lead this presentation, sharing insights into his recent artistic and curatorial projects. He will highlight his curatorial role in the 1st Taiwan International Austronesian Art Triennial, which focussed on the history, culture, and contemporary issues of island and maritime Indigenous communities worldwide. Additionally, Etan will explore how his artistic practice is shaped by the Indigenous ‘Return Our Lands’ and ‘Regain Our Names’ movements of 1990s Taiwan, as well as 2008 Typhoon Morakot, which devastated Paridrayan village. He will further discuss his current solo exhibition Mountain Winds Remain Sweetly Fragrant at Asia Art Centre, Taipei.
A relaxed Q+A will follow the presentation, where people are welcome to engage with speakers through a translator to discuss Etan and the Studio’s practice and ideas.
Founded in 2009, Etan Creative Vision Art Studio focuses mainly on the artistic creations by the founder Etan Pavavalung and the artists from Tjavaran village, including visual arts, artistic activities, and video recordings. Their visit to Naarm is hosted by Art+Australia with the support of the School of Culture and Communication (Faculty of Arts), Art+Australia (Faculty of Fine Arts and Music), the Taiwanese government, the Harold Schönberg Bequest, and an Arts Graduate Research Publication Support Grant in SCC.
Special thanks to Mimi Kelley and Chloe Ho for helping with the flyers and co-organising the event.
Best
Simon Soon
