Could I please post the below to the list. Thank you. Richard

It is with great sadness that I report the death last week of a colleague, Emeritus Professor David Bell, of the University of Otago.

David started his career in the 1970s as an art and art history high school teacher, and began contributing to courses at the Dunedin College of Education in the mid-1980s. His interest in Japanese art, primarily ukiyo-e, developed from his own practice as a print maker, and his understanding and sensitivity to printing’s various forms and possibilities. He completed his PhD thesis in the early 2000s under the supervision of the aesthetician Peter Leech, which analysed the conditions and materials with which ukiyo-e artists worked that led to the peculiar stylistic characteristics of their art. This was subsequently published as Ukiyo-e Explained. In Hokusai’s Project, David’s background in art making and teaching combined superbly in lucid and revealing explanations of Hokusai’s spatial constructions, and the tensions within them. Both books were published by Brill. Beyond ukiyo-e, David published widely on topics such as aesthetic education and museology. David was always excellent company, and remained ebullient despite later years of failing health. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and many friends.
