Capitalism is intrinsically linked to the global financial system, and depends on it for its survival. Over the years, this shadowy entity has grown in size and is now many times bigger than the real economy. Huge imaginary profits are booked daily in this subsystem, without any real underlying wealth being created. The result is an enormous expansion of imaginary wealth in forms of financial assets. The so called Global Financial Crisis is simply an inevitable result of this deliberate deception. Sooner or later someone has to realise that the pretended wealth does not actually exist, and so we have a financial crisis.
The government bailouts, instead of solving the problem, have made things worse and made future crisis inevitable.
All people who care about the well being of people and society need a clear understanding of how financial markets work and their role in redistributing wealth to the rich and creating financial crisis. Unfortunately, these things are never explained in the established media, and the academic papers that could explain the reality are mostly inaccessible to people.
This workshop aims at making this knowledge available to everyone. By modeling the economy in a very small scale, the essential structure of the economy, with the roles of banks, stock markets and credit derivatives will become within the reach of everyone. You will learn how the fundamental rules of the economy allow banks to produce money; stock markets to create wealth out of nothing; and let speculators take out insurance on assets they don’t own. The subprime crisis will be explained, and you will clearly understand the causes of the financial crisis, as well as what fundamental changes are needed to prevent its reoccurrence.
If you are interested in understanding the financial crisis; know how it may affect the future of the world economy; and discover what changes need to be made to prevent future crises, then this workshop is for you.
