fellow travellers,

I would like to survey what kind of laptops you will be bringing and
if you plan to install any of the software for the school/workshop on
this. More details will follow on this, but depending on your project
you might want to install AMUSE or one or two of the tools from the
"ManyBody" suite we have been using in previous schools.

So please, return to me (@gmail or astro) some details such as:

- operating system version (e.g. Linux Fedora 11, MacOSX 10.4.11 etc.)
- CPU speed, memory and free disk space you have
- did you install the development tools (gcc, gfortran/g77, make,
autoconf)?
On a Mac this can be confusing if you've never done it before. On
top of Xcode you'll have to
select one of Fink/macPorts/HPC).

The should also be some workstations available with access to machines
which have the software installed we need for the school. However, we
do recommend you learn how to install some of the tools so you can
easily pick up the project once you are back at your home institution.

If you had not guessed this, I will be sending out a little bit of homework
next week, including an apetizer. Given the large variety of flavors in
development tools and how the software reacts to this, you may have
to install a different version for certain packages.

I can't give you any specific details yet which flavor of linux/mac will
absolutely not work, but hopefully none of you would be forced to upgrade.
My experience in upgrading has almost always been that it takes several
days (on a good day) to get back in shape, so if you do want to upgrade,
do this soon!

Well,
I have full development-oriented Gentoo box at my old acer with
Pentium M 1.73, 2GB RAM and at least 10GB of free space. MPI2 and HDF5
is on board, too,

Cheers:)

Hi,

I had already installed the developer tools and fink, however I could
not install gfortran. I found a installing package on MACResearch. You
might be interested to install it.

Here is the link:

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your email.
Sorry for my slow response.
I have a laptop (Lenovo thinkpad) Kubuntu installed in it.
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5870 @ 2.00GHz
RAM=4.0 GB

I have about 100 GB disk space... I can get extra hard drive too.

I have a question though. Is it possible to run simulation with say 10^6
particle in this laptop? It maybe slow or take long time.
Just trying to understand the aim of installing AMUSE in it.

Thanks,
Kanak

Kanak
10^6 is doable for O(N) and maybe O(NlogN) codes, such
as gadget. But not for globular clusters through core collapse.
My favorite approach is to test the scripts for a smal number,
say 10^3 or 10^4, which should take under an hour, and then
figure out your series of experiments, and submit that to a
batch queue on a big cluster, and go into town and have a nice
Indonesian dinner with Dutch beer. That's my plan, and I'll stick
to that.
