MyPioneer VSX-D608 receiver (from 1999!) is having a small issue with its volume knob. When I twist the knob, sometimes the volume increases a little and then stops, sometimes it will go the opposite direction, and sometimes it does not change whatsoever. This is a video of the behavior. It seems random, but I can get it sometimes to adjust correctly if I twist the very, very slow. Adjusting the volume with the remote works fine, audio/video functions work fine, everything but the volume dial works perfectly. Is there anything I can do? Or am I stuck with the remote to change the volume?

I have a dual media player digital reciever model DXRM57BT. The control knob controls all audio settings it works fine when its pushed in and switches from say bass to treble but when I turn it to adjust it acts crazy sometimes or doesnt work at all. I turn it up it goes down randomly. What can I do?. I tried to get to the little board behind the knob but there is a plastic cover in the way I cant remove. But I see the small square board thru it..how can I get to it to clean it.

Disconnect the power from your receiver. Remove the top cover on your VSX-D608. Remove and pull out the black plastic knob (volume control) located on the front of your receiver. Look behind the volume control and you'll see a small board with the encoder mounted on it. Undo the screws holding the board and gently pull out the board. Gently use a small flat head screw driver and push/pry (be careful, you do not want to break them) away the 4 lugs that are holding the top cover on the encoder in place. Then gently pull out the knob which separates the assembly. Using an electronics contact cleaner spray (this can be purchased from electronics stores, do not use WD-40 or similar water displacement and lubricating products as these leave residues), spray and gently clean the inside of the encoder. Be very careful not to bend the small fingers located inside the unit. Sometimes there is some 'gunk' inside that is hard to clean so you need to use the cleaner and spray a few times. When dry, install the volume control back and push the 4 small lugs back into place. Rotate the control back and forth to ensure it moves smoothly. Install the board back into place, replace the top cover on the unit and plug the unit back in. Test it to make sure it works correctly.

If the above seems a bit daunting , buy a new encoder part # ASX7004 (not 100% sure on this point as cannot find out exactly but if AWX7386 is stamped on the encoder it is no longer available and the ASX7004 is the replacement for it. (AWX7836 is the part # used on VSX model # before and after yours, so I made an assumption about your as I couldn't find anything about your particular part) If there is a different number stamped on the encoder 'Google' it to get the correct part). Here is a link, there are others but nearly all say 'out of stock' You'll have to desolder the encoder from the board assembly and then solder in the new one. The link also shows what it looks like.

It looks like the part you want is a CAR AUDIO ENCODER WITH PUSH PIONEER VOLUME SEARCH TRACK. Pioneer Part #CSD1168. The Pioneer site refers you to this supplier, but you can find a few others as well

Given that it also has a push button switch integrated with it, disassembling it to clean the rotary encoder component may be difficult without causing problems when it comes to reassembling the encoder, so it may be easier to simply replace the encoder unit.

You would need to remove the head unit from the vehicle and then open it up to gain access to a point where you could unsolder the encoder from the board and solder in the new one, then reassemble everything and make sure that it works. You would have to do all of this anyway if you simply wanted to try to clean it as well.

The volume control on my Pioneer MVH-S312BT has been giving me fits for quite a while now. I ordered a Bourns PEC16-4025F-N0024 Rotary Encoder from Digi-Key only to find out it won't fit my radio. I wish I knew what the correct part would be to fix my situation. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. I've tried washing it out with some mass air flow sensor cleaner that helps but it's not a fix.

Spraying the cleaner in the volume control wasn't working as well as it did at first and not knowing anyway to find a replacement, I decided to try unsoldering it and following the fix from the YouTube video I posted above. That seems to have worked. I wiped the inside of the control with some rubbing alcohol and just slightly raised the wiper blades a little before putting it back together and soldering it back in. That seems to have fixed my problem. For how long I won't know for awhile.

That part is also a rotary encoder but I don't know how many pulses per rotation. 24 ppr should work, but if you count the clicks when your spin the shaft through one complete rotation you'll know for sure. Then you'll need to find an equivalent with the same footprint, shaft configuration and length. That may take a bit of digging as there are many variations. Here is a good place to start:

My Pontiac does that. Its a feature to keep the volume at a constant level as road noise increases. I like it. I believe there is an option to turn the feature off so might want to take a look in the owners manual.

Just a few months ago I had to change the radio head out in my Lincoln as it had developed 2 problems; both due to the washboard roads that are beating things to death. One was the CD skipping and the other was the volume/ON/OFF controls which had developed a mind of their own.

At times the radio would pop on or off and at other times the volume would rise without any input from the driver.

There are a number of places where you can send your defective radio into and have them fix it, though if it is just a standard unit it may not be cost effective to do that. More expensive units can be worth fixing, especially over the dealer cost of a new unit. The trouble you are having does sound like a problem inside the radio section and replacing it may be the best solution to the problem. Ebay is a good place to find original replacement units. That way all your external controls for the system will still work.

Hello, this is a very old thread, but we are facing the same issue in our new MG RX5. The radio volume fluctuates, and it is a very annoying issue. If anyone has the same experience, kindly let us know how you found a solution.

Drove my truck all day listening to the radio. Stopped at a store before coming into work and noticed that when the radio came on the volume went straight down on its on. It was about 25% up when I got out of the truck. Turned the knob and the volume line comes up and automatically goes back down. Turned the radio off and back on and no change. Turned the truck off and back on and no change. IF I turn the volume knob really quick the sound goes up but again goes right back down on its on to no sound at all??? Truck is a 2015 All Terrain SLT with Bose and I have had it for 4 months now with no issues.

In my Tahoe there is an "Auto Volume" setting that adjusts the volume based on vehicle noise or speed (could account for the volume going down when you stopped). There are five settings from low to high, if your vehicle is equipped with Auto Volume your setting may be on low. Check it out.

Couple of things I will definitely check out! Im at work till midnight right now. It was weird though like the volume had an anchor tied to it. I could turn the knob and it would go up slightly but then turn right back down to no sound at all. The speed of the vehicle had no effect on any of the sound. I messed around with during the 5 minute ride from the store where it begin till I arrived at work. Cut the truck off and let it sit for a minute, started it back up and volume still would not stay turned up. It had been fine all day, I went into the store and when I came out and got back in my truck is when it started.

This is crazy. Today I listened all day. Stopped for 30 min. Got back in and my radio was as high as it would go. I turned the knob down quickly and it went down but then right back up. I tried the steering control and it did the same thing. Used my phone to lower the volume as I was on BT.. Stopped and turned off the truck then back on and it worked. Very weird

I'm having this same issue (3 times) with my 2014 Sierra and have had it addressed trice at the dealership. They claimed both times that the issue was corrected by re-flashing the IntelliLink system. I actually had it recur about a week after the second fix. I have a video showing the issue which I will try to post. I have attempted to read through as many posts as I could find and have not found that anyone has found a solution. If there is one, would you please let me know?

We are sorry to see that you are experiencing this volume concern, and understand how multiple trips to the dealership can be frustrating. We recognize that you have been working with a GM Customer Service advisor and would be more than happy to look into your existing case for you. Please private message us with your case number or VIN so we can assist you. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Ultimately, I am attempting to have someone with GM customer service reply to this. I have contacted them and the reply I received was generic and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
