Scientists in China have created an unprecedentedly bright laser that shoots particles of sound instead of light. According to New Scientist, this is the most powerful "sound laser" yet. At the core of the device is a one-micrometre-long silica bead. Researchers from Hunan Normal University in China used two beams of light to levitate the bead and surround it with a reflective cavity. Unlike regular lasers, that emit light particles called photons, these machines release particle-like chunks of sounds called phonons.

Also known as Sound Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (SASER), these "sound lasers" produce a beam of uniform sound waves on a nano scale. The first successful SASERs were developed in 2009.

From the beginning, rock and roll music has disrupted expectations, both musically and socially. In the 70s with glam rock and David Bowie, a focus on gender roles came into play, and when punk rock came onto the scene shortly thereafter, new levels of subversion were introduced.

Juliann Frances: For me personally, Depeche Mode has been a consistent influence. I know that seems like an easy answer but growing up they were still played pretty heavily on the radio and I got super into them. And my dad was very excited that our new stuff sounds like L7.

Popular Culture Beat: When I think of trans artists, I think not only of change but of the transgressive nature of just going about daily life. How does all of this play into your songwriting and messaging?

Kaitlynn Autumn: It plays into it a lot. On one hand, the lyrics are often very focused or inspired by my experience being trans. But even more so than that reinventing myself as a person has almost become second nature at this point. I try not to make two songs ever sound the same either which feels fitting somehow.

When Disturbed released their album, Immortalized, they included a cover of the famous Simon & Garfunkel track "The Sound of Silence." Most of you thought it sucked. It sucked so bad, we spent the second hour of a RIP a Livecast dissecting exactly why it sucked.But Disturbed weren't done. Instead, they decided to take it one step further with a music video for the track which is being positioned as "deep" and "powerful" by overpriced publicists, but really, somehow, made the song sound even worse to me.Maybe it's the extra-close shots of David D. The sound laser works by levitating a tiny bead in an optical tweezer made of two beams of light. This bead, which is about the same size as a bacterium, can then be made to vibrate within a reflective cavity, which amplifies the phonons released by the vibrations.
