Hi all,
Last wednesday I went to the Devnology.nl roundtable meetup and we had a very interesting discussion about a number of topics. A summary of the meeting can be found on their website [1]. It's a Dutch initiative, so the website and meetings are in Dutch. Not sure if that is up for debate, as there are Dutch developers out there that don't speak English or are really bad at it.
Devnology is a (recently started) foundation that tries to bring enthusiastic software developers of different communities together in order to help them learn and share knowledge. They organize free, sponsored events in different formats. For all event formats, interactivity and discussion are important components. Every meeting has a theme or a topic or something that provides the fuel for a conversation.
From my experience last wednesday, this idea works excellent in practice.
The crowd consisted consisted mostly of Windows/.NET/Java developers, but there were a two SmallTalkers and a Pythonista. More people from "our" open source background would make the discussion more varied and interesting for everyone, so that is the goal of this e-mail: I'm trying to recruit participants for the next events!
The next event [2] will be held on wednesday 3 June from 18.00 to 21.00. The location will be in Leiden or The Hague; there are multiple sponsors who want to host it, but no decision has been made yet.
The evening starts with a presentation by Jeroen van den Bos, Software Architect at the Dutch Forensic Institute. He give us a guided tour of the world of forensic software.
The second part of the event is a code fest where we'll try to apply some of the techniques in a contest. The event is officially full, but there are one or two extra seats available for Rubyists (or Haskellists, or Iokeists or Clojurists or ...). Let me know if you are interested.
The second next event [3] is an Open Space meeting, which will be held on saturday 4 July from 11.00 to 16.00. The location is most likely Baarn, but again that depends on who sponsors it. The details of the event format are a bit fuzzy, but it seems like a discussion where people can contribute their own topics.
A suggested topic is validation logic, in context of the .NET framework. This seems like an interesting topic to contrast with ActiveRecord's validation logic. Let's see if there is something to be learned from the other approach.
Based on my limited experience so far, I can say that the people that attend Devnology meetings are nice and open to discuss new ideas. I enjoyed last meeting and hope that others might enjoy future events.
If you have questions, you can poke @pjvandesande or @freekleemhuis on Twitter. Of course, you can ask me (@narnach) as well.
Cheers,
