Dear Colleagues,
At the 2025 joint Annual Meeting of the SMT and AMS, the SMT Performance and Analysis Interest Group and the Dance and Movement Interest Group will be hosting a joint meeting featuring lightning talks and Q&A, followed by a roundtable discussion about the presentations.
We invite proposals for 10-minute lightning talks on the theme "movement in/and performance." Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):
–physicality/gesture in musical performance
–spatial relations
–music and dance collaborations
–embodiment
–bodies in performance
–movement and/or performance in pedagogical settings
We especially welcome live demonstrations, collaborations between performers and scholars, and innovative formats. We also encourage authors to submit proposals for projects that are in early stages, as the lightning format is an effective forum in which to socialize such work.
Proposals should be a maximum of 350 words and may include up to 3 pages of supplementary material, which might consist of links to multimedia, figures, and/or a bibliography. Please submit your proposal as a single, anonymized PDF to this Google Form by Friday, August 15 @ 11:59 pm Central time. Accepted presenters will be notified by mid to late September. In line with the SMT’s policy, accepted presenters who will be unable to attend the conference due to travel concerns may choose to either designate a proxy to read their paper on their behalf or submit a pre-recorded presentation.
Please feel welcome to reach out to the DMIG co-chairs at danceandmovement [at] societymusictheory.org or the PAIG co-chairs at smtpaig [at] gmail.com with any questions. We look forward to receiving your proposals!
All best,
Stefanie Bilidas and Rachel Gain, DMIG Co-Chairs
