Dear colleagues,

The American Musicological Society’s Music and Dance Study Group invites proposals for 10-minute lightning talks to be presented during our study group meeting at the 2026 AMS Annual Meeting Online.

The events of 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, engendered discourses around (dis)embodied virtual practices. As individuals increasingly turned to online spaces, the formation of stable and fluid movement communities brought about questions of choreography, relationality, and geographies (both online and offline). Following the work of digital performance scholars, we ask what affordances and constraints the ‘telematic’ and the ‘networked’ may offer (Santana 2014, Popat 2021). As we revisit the digital conference space, we consider such questions as:

  • How do movements become cloistered or distinct in isolation?

  • How might studies of early music + movement practices interact/interplay with virtuality?

  • What constraints or opportunities come from virtual or remote dance sessions?

  • How does videography frame dance performance, practice, or installation?

We solicit papers on music and dance, broadly defined, that address any of (but are not limited to) these issues in a conceptual connection to the virtual meeting. Proposals should be a maximum of 350 words and are due on April 15, 2026. We especially encourage work from graduate students and early-career scholars. Please submit your proposal using this form

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the study group leadership.

All best,

Angelina Gibson - ahgi...@umich.edu (MDSG Co-Chair), Destiny Meadows - dmea...@unc.edu (MDSG Co-Chair), and Kari Lindquist - ka...@unc.edu (MDSG Secretary-Treasurer)
