From Tuesday, the 27th of Avani month, Haevilambi year, (12.09.2017) to Sunday, the 8th of Purattasi month (24.09.2017)

Dear all,

As per the advice and guidance of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetathipathi, Jagatguru, Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji, Sri Sankara Vijeyendra Saraswati Swamiji, Dharumai Adheenam, 26th Guru Maha Sannidhanam, Srilasri Shanmuka Desika Jnanasambandha Paramacharya Swamiji, Dharumai Adheenam Ilaya Pandara Sannadhi Srilasri Masilamani Desika Jnanasambandha Swamiji, Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam 24th Guru Maha Sannidhanam, Srilasri Ambalavana Desika Paramacharya Swamiji, Thiruppanandal Sri Kasi Mutt Chief Kayilai Maamunivar Srilasri Kasivasi Muthukumara Swamiji, Velakurichi Adheenam Srilasri Sathyajnana Mahadeva Desika Paramacharya Swamiji, Kanda hereditary Sri Suryanarkoil Adheenam Srilasri Sankaralinga Desika Paramacharya Swamiji and others.

The Pushkara festival is the festival which takes place in the river identified to the Rasi (Astrol sign), whenever Guru Bhagawan moves from one Rasi to another, every year. Legend has it that Pushkara who resides in the kamandal (water jug) of Brahma, who is the lord of three and half crore (holy) rivers, enters the river identified to the Rasi for 12 days, during the time when the movement of Lord Guru takes place. It is believed that when Lord Guru moves from Kanya Rasi to Thula Rasi, Pushkara will reside in the river Cauvery, which is the river identified with Thula Rasi, from Tuesday, the 27th of Avani month, Haevilambi year, (12.09.2017) to Sunday, the 8th of Purattasi month (24.09.2017). As this Pushkara is taking place after 144 years, it is being celebrated as the Great Pushkara festival.

The town of Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district is eminent as the holy town, ascribed with the proverb, ‘even if thousand things are there, they will not be equivalent to Mayuram’. The reason for this is stated in the book, ‘Cauvery Mahatmiyam’, as the virtuous benefit one would get in taking bath daily for thousands of years in the holy Ganges, is obtained by taking the holy bath in the bathing Ghat in Mayiladuthurai town, during the holy month of Thula. This apart, it is stated in the Thula Cauvery Mahatmyam that all the holy rivers like Ganges, merge themselves in the Thula bathing Ghat of Cauvery in the month of Thula and get absolved of their own sins.

That is, Pushkara resides and blesses by entering Ganges, when Guru Bhagwan is in Mesha Rasi, entering Narmadha, when Guru Bhagwan is in Rishabha rasi, river Saraswati when in Mithuna, in Yamuna when in Kataka, in Godavari when in Simha, in Krishna when in Kanni, in Cauvery when in Thula, in Tamiraparani when in Vrichika, in Indus when Guru Bhagwan is in Dhanusu, in Tungabhadra when in Makara, in Brahmaputra when in Kumbha and in Bharanitha, the tributary of Godavari when Guru Bhagwan is in Meena.

Since the Astrol sign of river Cauvery is Thula and as this Maha Pushkar occurs only once in 144 years, although it has been arranged with the help of the Government, to celebrate this Pushkar festival in all the places where Cauvery flows, it has been arranged to celebrate it as Maha Pushkara Festival, especially at the Thula Ghat of Cauvery in Mayiladuthurai.

It has also been arranged to perform Theerthavari Utsava (Holy dip of divine idols) after taking the deity out on ceremonial rounds in Mayiladuthurai temple as well as in all the temples in and around Mayiladuthurai, to perform Homams (offering to God of Fire), Yagnas (offerings/Sacrifices), Reciting of Vedas and Thirumurai, Spiritual discourses, Chanting of the holy names of God, cultural events and Arti in the river Cauvery in the evenings.

As Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Devas, Rishis, reside in the rivers during the holy period of Pushkara, bathing in the rivers, fetches the result of having taken bath in three and half crore holy rivers and gives more than the virtuous benefits of having performed charities like feeding the poor, donating clothes, etc., and paves way for our liberation.

Performing tarpana (offering of water with sesame) and ceremonies like thithi to the deceased forefathers after taking bath during this holy period of Pushkara will remove curses, if any, of the forefathers and help in leading a happy life.

Although this Maha Pushkara is recommended for all the Astrol signs, it has been emphasized that it is highly desirable to perform the atonement by persons with Kanya, Thula and Vrichika Rasis and moderately desirable to do the atonement, by persons with Mesha, Midhuna, Kumbha, Meena Rasis.

We appeal to all the people to come in large numbers, participate in this great Cauvery Maha Pushkara holy festival, which is being organized under the guidance of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetathipathi, Jagatguru Sri Sankaracharya Swamijis, Adheena karthas, Heads of various mutts (Matathipathis), Scholars etc., and be the recipients of the blessings of mother Cauvery.
