Adi Shankara Jayanthi – Message on His Love for His Mother

Introduction by JambunathanOn the sacred occasion of Adi Shankara Jayanthi – 21st April 2026, let all devotees celebrate with heartfelt Pooja and Prayers to Adi Shankara and his disciples, who continue to bless us with wisdom and guidance. On this day, I wish to share with friends and devotees a special message highlighting the profound love and affection Adi Shankara had for his mother Aryamba, especially during her last days.

English Version

Adi Shankara, who renounced worldly life at the tender age of eight and gifted the world the philosophy of Advaita, lived only for 32 years. What could an eight-year-old child know? Yet, when his mother Aryamba, shocked by his decision to embrace sannyasa, reluctantly agreed, Shankara comforted her with a solemn promise:

“Mother, whenever you call me, wherever I may be in this world, I will be before you that very moment.”

This assurance gave his mother the strength to let him go. Years passed, and as Aryamba’s final days approached, she longed to see her son once more. Gathering her fading strength, she softly called out, “Shankara, Shankara, Shankara.”

At once, Shankara appeared before her, tenderly lifting her head onto his lap. Aryamba, overwhelmed with emotion, touched and embraced her son. Yet, seeing the ornaments on his body, her heart trembled. Had her son strayed from the path of renunciation? She wept silently, fearing he had abandoned his vow.

But Shankara reassured her: “Mother, as promised, I came the moment you called. Why do you not answer me? Did I delay? Are you angry?” Aryamba realized in shock that the one who had first held her head was none other than Lord Krishna himself, who had come to protect her until Shankara arrived. Shankara explained: “When I left for renunciation, I entrusted Lord Krishna of our street temple to care for you until I returned. Unable to bear even a few moments of delay, Krishna himself came to hold your head.”

Aryamba, moved to tears, remembered Krishna’s compassion. Just as the Lord rushed to save Gajendra the elephant from the crocodile’s grip upon hearing his cry, so too did He hasten to comfort Aryamba. The Lord needs no weapons or delay when His devotee calls – He comes running like a mother to her crying child.

Adi Shankara performed the final rites for his mother with devotion, proving that even those who renounce the world never neglect their duties to their parents. The samadhi of Aryamba, the lamp lit by Shankara, and the temple of Krishna who guarded her, all remain to this day.

Shankara’s teaching resounds:

“Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam, Govindam Bhaja Moodhamate. Samprapte Sannihite Kale, Nahi Nahi Rakshati Dukrunkarane.”

O foolish mind, sing the praises of Govinda. At the time of death, your learning will not save you. Only devotion to Govinda will protect you.

Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!
