Online Teaching and Our Traditional Values
Technology is rapidly changing the world, and in many ways it has been a blessing. Since the COVID era, online learning has opened doors for countless students and teachers across the globe. It has made the learning of Sanatana Dharma, Vedas, Carnatic Music, Sanskrit, and many other subjects accessible to people irrespective of geographical boundaries.
However, while embracing technology, we must not lose sight of the values and discipline that are the foundation of our traditions.
In our culture, a teacher (Guru) is not merely an instructor but a guide who imparts knowledge with reverence, purity, and dedication. Unfortunately, in many online classes today, these standards are gradually declining. It is disheartening to see some tutors conducting classes while sitting casually or even lying on a bed. In traditional Hindu learning systems, physical and mental discipline, cleanliness, and sanctity are considered essential before teaching sacred subjects.
Whether it is Veda Parayanam, Sanatana Dharma teachings, Carnatic Music, or spiritual discourses, the teacher’s conduct itself becomes a lesson for the student. Children observe not only what is taught but also how it is taught.
A few concerns that deserve attention:
• Maintaining personal cleanliness and presentability before conducting classes, especially those related to spiritual subjects.
• Creating a dedicated and respectful teaching space rather than treating classes as a casual activity.
• Remembering that teaching is a sacred responsibility and not merely a source of income.
• Upholding punctuality and discipline despite challenges posed by different time zones.
• Preserving the Guru–Shishya tradition by fostering respect, humility, and commitment.
• Setting the right example for young minds, who learn values through observation.
Technology is a wonderful tool, but it should complement our traditions, not dilute them. Let us strive to combine modern convenience with timeless values, ensuring that future generations receive not only knowledge but also the culture, discipline, and sanctity that accompany it.
When knowledge is imparted with purity, discipline, and devotion, it becomes wisdom.
