Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 20 In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa pleads with Seetā to love him. He says that he cannot take his eyes off from whichever of her limbs it falls upon, even though she is emaciated and her body lacks toilet. He implores her to dress well and wear every ornament and enjoy all the luxuries of the kingdom along with him. He asks her to think beyond the current predicament. He says that Rāma is no equal to him in any manner, has no chance of getting a glimpse of her again, and might even be dead by now. He asks her to become the queen and lord over all the women of his inner apartments, who he says are the best of the best in all the three worlds, endowed with every excellence. He promises that all of them will be at her service.
5.20.1 अ 5.20.1 आ 5.20.1 इ 5.20.1 ई	स तां परिवृतां दीनाम् निरानन्दां तपस्विनीम् । साकारैर्मधुरैर्वाक्यैः न्यदर्शयत रावणः ॥ sa tāṃ parivṛtāṃ dīnām nirānandāṃ tapasvinīm । sākārairmadhurairvākyaiḥ nyadarṡayata rāvaṇaḥ ॥ Rāvaṇa talked, in sweet words and with pleasing gestures, to Seetā who was in a pitiful state, suffering and knowing no joy, surrounded (by the Rākshasis):
5.20.2 अ 5.20.2 आ 5.20.2 इ 5.20.2 ई	मां दृष्ट्वा नागनासोरु गूहमाना स्तनोदरम् । अदर्शनमिवात्मानम् भयान्नेतुं त्वमिच्छसि ॥ māṃ dṛṣṭvā nāganāsōru gūhamānā stanōdaram । adarṡanamivātmānam bhayānnētuṃ tvamicchasi ॥ Oh you of elephant-trunk-like thighs! You hide your breasts and belly on seeing me, as if you, in your dread of me, could make yourself invisible!
5.20.3 अ 5.20.3 आ 5.20.3 इ 5.20.3 ई	कामये त्वां विशालाक्षि बहुमन्यस्व मां प्रिये । सर्वाङ्गगुणसम्पन्ने सर्वलोकमनोहरे ॥ kāmayē tvāṃ viṡālākṣi bahumanyasva māṃ priyē । sarvāṅgaguṇasampannē sarvalōkamanōharē ॥ I want you, O wide-eyed one! Please consider me, my dear! You ravish the hearts of all people with your every limb exquisitely chiseled!
5.20.4 अ 5.20.4 आ 5.20.4 इ 5.20.4 ई	नेह केचिन्मनुष्या वा राक्षसाः कामरूपिणः । व्यपसर्पतु ते सीते भयं मत्तः समुत्थितम् ॥ nēha kēcinmanuṣyā vā rākṣasāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ । vyapasarpatu tē sītē bhayaṃ mattaḥ samutthitam ॥ There are no others here, neither humans nor Rākshasas who can take any form at will. And may you overcome the fear, O Seetā, that could have engendered from my presence!
5.20.5 अ 5.20.5 आ 5.20.5 इ 5.20.5 ई	स्वधर्मो रक्षसां भीरु सर्वथैव न संशयः । गमनं वा परस्त्रीणाम् हरणं सम्प्रमथ्य वा ॥ svadharmō rakṣasāṃ bhīru sarvathaiva na saṃṡayaḥ । gamanaṃ vā parastrīṇām haraṇaṃ sampramathya vā ॥ It is in the very nature of Rākshasas, O timid one, by all means and without a doubt, to seek other’s women and carry them off forcibly.
5.20.6 अ 5.20.6 आ 5.20.6 इ 5.20.6 ई	एवं चैतदकामां तु न त्वां स्प्रक्ष्यामि मैथिलि । कामं कामः शरीरे मे यथाकामं प्रवर्तताम् ॥ ēvaṃ caitadakāmāṃ tu na tvāṃ sprakṣyāmi maithili । kāmaṃ kāmaḥ ṡarīrē mē yathākāmaṃ pravartatām ॥ Even that being so, I will not touch you, O Maithili, until you develop love for me, even if it means putting up with this lust in my body that rages uncontrollably.
5.20.7 अ 5.20.7 आ 5.20.7 इ 5.20.7 ई	देवि नेह भयं कार्यम् मयि विश्वसि हि प्रिये । प्रणयस्व च तत्त्वेन मैवं भूः शोकलालसा ॥ dēvi nēha bhayaṃ kāryam mayi viṡvasi hi priyē । praṇayasva ca tattvēna maivaṃ bhūḥ ṡōkalālasā ॥ My lady! Harbor no fear from me on this count. You can trust me, my dear! I want you to love me genuinely. Do not constantly wallow in sadness.
5.20.8 अ 5.20.8 आ 5.20.8 इ 5.20.8 ई	एकवेणी धराशय्या ध्यानं मलिनमम्बरम् । अस्थानेऽप्युपवासश्च नैतान्यौपयिकानि ते ॥ ēkavēṇī dharāṡayyā dhyānaṃ malinamambaram । asthānē'pyupavāsaṡca naitānyaupayikāni tē ॥ Keeping hair in a single plait, sleeping on bare grounds, brooding over things, wearing dirty garment, going on fast without a reason; all these are not right for you.
5.20.9 अ 5.20.9 आ 5.20.9 इ 5.20.9 ई 5.20.10 अ 5.20.10 आ 5.20.10 इ 5.20.10 ई	विचित्राणि च माल्यानि चन्दनान्यगरूणि च । विविधानि च वासांसि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च । महार्हाणि च पानानि शयनान्यासनानि च । गीतं नृत्तं च वाद्यं च लभ मां प्राप्य मैथिलि ॥ vicitrāṇi ca mālyāni candanānyagarūṇi ca । vividhāni ca vāsāṃsi divyānyābharaṇāni ca । mahārhāṇi ca pānāni ṡayanānyāsanāni ca । gītaṃ nṛttaṃ ca vādyaṃ ca labha māṃ prāpya maithili ॥ Come to me Maithili and enjoy everything – beautiful flower garlands, perfume of sandal and Agaru, every kind of garment, splendid jewelry, drinks, beds and couches that only the most opulent deserve, and song and dance and music!
5.20.11 अ 5.20.11 आ 5.20.11 इ 5.20.11 ई	स्त्रीरत्नमसि मैवं भूः कुरु गात्रेषु भूषणम् । मां प्राप्य हि कथं नु स्यात् त्वमनर्हा सुविग्रहे ॥ strīratnamasi maivaṃ bhūḥ kuru gātrēṣu bhūṣaṇam । māṃ prāpya hi kathaṃ nu syāt tvamanarhā suvigrahē ॥ You are a jewel among women; do not be like this; What could possibly prevent you from decorating your body with ornaments, after you have me (interested in you)!
5.20.12 अ 5.20.12 आ 5.20.12 इ 5.20.12 ई	इदं ते चारु सञ्जातम् यौवनं व्यतिवर्तते । यदतीतं पुनर्नैति स्रोतः शीघ्रमपामिव ॥ idaṃ tē cāru sañjātam yauvanaṃ vyativartatē । yadatītaṃ punarnaiti srōtaḥ ṡīghramapāmiva ॥ This captivatingly evolved youth of yours is slipping away with time. And it will not come back, like water rushing in the rapids.
5.20.13 अ 5.20.13 आ 5.20.13 इ 5.20.13 ई	त्वां कृत्वोपरतो मन्ये रूपकर्ता स विश्वसृक् । न हि रूपोपमा त्वन्या तवास्ति शुभदर्शने ॥ tvāṃ kṛtvōparatō manyē rūpakartā sa viṡvasṛk । na hi rūpōpamā tvanyā tavāsti ṡubhadarṡanē ॥ I guess the Creator of the World who gives a shape to everything, called it a day after creating you, (or else, how is it possible that) there is no one else comparable to you in beauty, O you of pleasing looks!
5.20.14 अ 5.20.14 आ 5.20.14 इ 5.20.14 ई	त्वां समासाद्य वैदेहि रूपयौवनशालिनीम् । कः पुमानतिवर्तेत साक्षादपि पितामहः ॥ tvāṃ samāsādya vaidēhi rūpayauvanaṡālinīm । kaḥ pumānativartēta sākṣādapi pitāmahaḥ ॥ Having got you, full of beauty and youth, O Vaidēhi, which man can go past, ignoring you, even if it were the Grandsire!
5.20.15 अ 5.20.15 आ 5.20.15 इ 5.20.15 ई	यद्यत्पश्यामि ते गात्रम् शीतांशुसदृशानने । तस्मिंस्तस्मिन् पृथुश्रोणि चक्षुर्मम निबध्यते ॥ yadyatpaṡyāmi tē gātram ṡītāṃṡusadṛṡānanē । tasmiṃstasmin pṛthuṡrōṇi cakṣurmama nibadhyatē ॥ O you of moon-bright face and wide Kaṭee! No matter which limb of yours I see, it arrests my eyes!
5.20.16 अ 5.20.16 आ 5.20.16 इ 5.20.16 ई 5.20.17 अ 5.20.17 आ	भव मैथिलि भार्या मे मोहमेनं विसर्जय । बह्वीनामुत्तमस्त्रीणाम् आहृतानामितस्ततः । सर्वासामेव भद्रं ते ममाग्रमहिषी भव ॥ bhava maithili bhāryā mē mōhamēnaṃ visarjaya । bahvīnāmuttamastrīṇām āhṛtānāmitastataḥ । sarvāsāmēva bhadraṃ tē mamāgramahiṣī bhava ॥ O Maithili! Give up your foolishness and be my wife! I have brought many excellent women from every corner (of the world)! Be the chief among all my queens! May all bode well for you!
5.20.17 इ 5.20.17 ई 5.20.18 अ 5.20.18 आ	लोकेभ्यो यानि रत्नानि सम्प्रमथ्याहृतानि वै । तानि मे भीरु सर्वाणि राज्यं चैतदहं च ते ॥ lōkēbhyō yāni ratnāni sampramathyāhṛtāni vai । tāni mē bhīru sarvāṇi rājyaṃ caitadahaṃ ca tē ॥ O timid one! All the precious stones that I have secured forcibly from all over the world shall be yours, and this kingdom and myself as well!
5.20.18 इ 5.20.18 ई 5.20.19 अ 5.20.19 आ	विजित्य पृथिवीं सर्वाम् नानानगरमालिनीम् । जनकाय प्रदास्यामि तव हेतोर्विलासिनि ॥ vijitya pṛthivīṃ sarvām nānānagaramālinīm । janakāya pradāsyāmi tava hētōrvilāsini ॥ O lovely dame! I can conquer the entire earth along with the many cities that dot it, and bestow it to Janaka, for your sake!
5.20.19 इ 5.20.19 ई 5.20.20 अ 5.20.20 आ	नेह पश्यामि लोकेऽन्यम् यो मे प्रतिबलो भवेत् । पश्य मे सुमहद्वीर्यम् अप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे ॥ nēha paṡyāmi lōkē'nyam yō mē pratibalō bhavēt । paṡya mē sumahadvīryam apratidvandvamāhavē ॥ I cannot think of anyone else in this entire world who can rival me in strength. You should realize how mighty I am; there is no one who can challenge me in the battle field.
5.20.20 इ 5.20.20 ई 5.20.21 अ 5.20.21 आ	असकृत्संयुगे भग्ना मया विमृदितध्वजाः । अशक्ताः प्रत्यनीकेषु स्थातुं मम सुरासुराः ॥ asakṛtsaṃyugē bhagnā mayā vimṛditadhvajāḥ । aṡaktāḥ pratyanīkēṣu sthātuṃ mama surāsurāḥ ॥ Crushed in many battles by me and their flag posts shattered, no Sura or Asura dare stand in an army that opposes me.
5.20.21 इ 5.20.21 ई 5.20.22 अ 5.20.22 आ 5.20.22 इ 5.20.22 ई	इच्छ मां क्रियतामद्य प्रतिकर्म तवोत्तमम् । सप्रभाण्यवसज्यन्ताम् तवाङ्गे भूषणानि च । साधु पश्यामि ते रूपम् संयुक्तं प्रतिकर्मणा ॥ iccha māṃ kriyatāmadya pratikarma tavōttamam । saprabhāṇyavasajyantām tavāṅgē bhūṣaṇāni ca । sādhu paṡyāmi tē rūpam saṃyuktaṃ pratikarmaṇā ॥ Love me. All you should do now is to decorate yourself to the best. Let every part of your body be bedecked with dazzling ornaments. I want to see your beauty enhanced by all those embellishments.
5.20.23 अ 5.20.23 आ 5.20.23 इ 5.20.23 ई	प्रतिकर्माभिसंयुक्ता दाक्षिण्येन वरानने । भुंक्ष्व भोगान्यथाकामम् पिब भीरु रमस्व च ॥ pratikarmābhisaṃyuktā dākṣiṇyēna varānanē । bhuṃkṣva bhōgānyathākāmam piba bhīru ramasva ca ॥ O timid one of lovely face! Decorate yourself in every possible way and yield to your delicate tastes! You should enjoy every luxury as you please and drink and make merry.
5.20.24 अ 5.20.24 आ 5.20.24 इ 5.20.24 ई	यथेष्टं च प्रयच्छ त्वम् पृथिवीं वा धनानि च । ललस्व मयि विस्रब्धा धृष्टमाज्ञापयस्व च ॥ yathēṣṭaṃ ca prayaccha tvam pṛthivīṃ vā dhanāni ca । lalasva mayi visrabdhā dhṛṣṭamājñāpayasva ca ॥ Give away as much of my land and wealth as you like. Keep trust in me and enjoy. Command me without any apprehension.
5.20.25 अ 5.20.25 आ 5.20.25 इ 5.20.25 ई	मत्प्रसादाल्ललन्त्याश्च ललन्तां बान्धवास्तव । ऋद्धिं ममानुपश्य त्वम् श्रियं भद्रे यशश्च मे ॥ matprasādāllalantyāṡca lalantāṃ bāndhavāstava । ṛddhiṃ mamānupaṡya tvam ṡriyaṃ bhadrē yaṡaṡca mē ॥ As you enjoy, with my grace, so will all your relatives. Just take a good look at my affluence, wealth and renown, my dear!
5.20.26 अ 5.20.26 आ 5.20.26 इ 5.20.26 ई 5.20.26 उ 5.20.26 ऊ	किं करिष्यसि रामेण सुभगे चीरवाससा । निक्षिप्तविजयो रामो गतश्रीर्वनगोचरः । व्रती स्थण्डिलशायी च शङ्के जीवति वा न वा ॥ kiṃ kariṣyasi rāmēṇa subhagē cīravāsasā । nikṣiptavijayō rāmō gataṡrīrvanagōcaraḥ । vratī sthaṇḍilaṡāyī ca ṡaṅkē jīvati vā na vā ॥ O lovely one! What will you do with Rāma who is clad in tree bark? I even wonder whether Rāma is alive or not, relieved of his wealth, roaming in the forests, observing austerities, sleeping on bare ground, and having lost the means to win in any battle.
5.20.27 अ 5.20.27 आ 5.20.27 इ 5.20.27 ई	न हि वैदेहि रामस्त्वाम् द्रष्टुं वा प्युपलप्स्यते । पुरोबलाकैरसितैः मेघैर्ज्योत्स्नामिवावृताम् ॥ na hi vaidēhi rāmastvām draṣṭuṃ vā pyupalapsyatē । purōbalākairasitaiḥ mēghairjyōtsnāmivāvṛtām ॥ Rāma will not be able to steal even a bare glimpse of you, O Vaidēhi, like one cannot get that of moonlight, on which a curtain of dark clouds (is drawn by) a line of cranes flying in front.
5.20.28 अ 5.20.28 आ 5.20.28 इ 5.20.28 ई	न चापि मम हस्तात्त्वाम् प्राप्तुमर्हति राघवः । हिरण्यकशिपुः कीर्तिम् इन्द्रहस्तगतामिव ॥ na cāpi mama hastāttvām prāptumarhati rāghavaḥ । hiraṇyakaṡipuḥ kīrtim indrahastagatāmiva ॥ Nor can Rāghava hope to retrieve you from my hands as Hiraṇyakaṡipu could his wife Keerti, from the hands of Indra.
5.20.29 अ 5.20.29 आ 5.20.29 इ 5.20.29 ई	चारुस्मिते चारुदति चारुनेत्रे विलासिनि । मनो हरसि मे भीरु सुपर्णः पन्नगं यथा ॥ cārusmitē cārudati cārunētrē vilāsini । manō harasi mē bhīru suparṇaḥ pannagaṃ yathā ॥ O timid one! O charming dame! You snatched my heart with your lovely eyes beautiful smile and beautiful teeth, as Suparṇa does a serpent.
5.20.30 अ 5.20.30 आ 5.20.30 इ 5.20.30 ई	क्लिष्टकौशेयवसनाम् तन्वीमप्यनलङ्कृताम् । त्वां दृष्ट्वा स्वेषु दारेषु रतिं नोपलभाम्यहम् ॥ kliṣṭakauṡēyavasanām tanvīmapyanalaṅkṛtām । tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā svēṣu dārēṣu ratiṃ nōpalabhāmyaham ॥ I am not able to enjoy love with my wives after seeing you, even though you are emaciated, wear crumpled silk cloth, and lack any toilet or ornament.
5.20.31 अ 5.20.31 आ 5.20.31 इ 5.20.31 ई	अन्तःपुरनिवासिन्यः स्त्रियः सर्वगुणान्विताः । यावन्त्यो मम सर्वासाम् ऐश्वर्यम् कुरु जानकि ॥ antaḥpuranivāsinyaḥ striyaḥ sarvaguṇānvitāḥ । yāvantyō mama sarvāsām aiṡvaryam kuru jānaki ॥ O Jānaki! Become the queen over all the women, whosoever are in my inner quarters, embodiments of every excellence.
5.20.32 अ 5.20.32 आ 5.20.32 इ 5.20.32 ई	मम ह्यसितकेशान्ते त्रैलोक्यप्रवराः स्त्रियः । तास्त्वां परिचरिष्यन्ति श्रियमप्सरसो यथा ॥ mama hyasitakēṡāntē trailōkyapravarāḥ striyaḥ । tāstvāṃ paricariṣyanti ṡriyamapsarasō yathā ॥ O you of black tresses! My women who are the best of the best in all the three worlds, shall wait upon you like Apsaras do upon goddess Lakshmi.
5.20.33 अ 5.20.33 आ 5.20.33 इ 5.20.33 ई	यानि वैश्रवणे सुभ्रु रत्नानि च धनानि च । तानि लोकांश्च सुश्रोणि मां च भुङ्क्ष्व यथासुखम् ॥ yāni vaiṡravaṇē subhru ratnāni ca dhanāni ca । tāni lōkāṃṡca suṡrōṇi māṃ ca bhuṅkṣva yathāsukham ॥ O you of lovely eyebrows and beautiful Kaṭee! Enjoy all the wealth and gems of Vaiṡravaṇa, and also mine and all that is in the three worlds!
5.20.34 अ 5.20.34 आ 5.20.34 इ 5.20.34 ई	न रामस्तपसा देवि न बलेन न विक्रमैः । न धनेन मया तुल्यः तेजसा यशसापि वा ॥ na rāmastapasā dēvi na balēna na vikramaiḥ । na dhanēna mayā tulyaḥ tējasā yaṡasāpi vā ॥ Rama is no equal to me, my lady, in either Tapa, strength, prowess, wealth, power or fame!
5.20.35 अ 5.20.35 आ 5.20.35 इ 5.20.35 ई	पिब विहर रमस्व भुङ्क्ष्व भोगान् धननिचयं प्रदिशामि मेदिनीं च । मयि लल ललने यथासुखं त्वं त्वयि च समेत्य ललन्तु बान्धवास्ते ॥ piba vihara ramasva bhuṅkṣva bhōgān dhananicayaṃ pradiṡāmi mēdinīṃ ca । mayi lala lalanē yathāsukhaṃ tvaṃ tvayi ca samētya lalantu bāndhavāstē ॥ Drink, play, be merry, and enjoy all the luxuries! I will give you all my treasures and lands. O playful one, play with me, enjoying as you please! And your relations also shall come together and enjoy with you.
5.20.36 अ 5.20.36 आ 5.20.36 इ 5.20.36 ई	कुसुमिततरुजालसन्ततानि भ्रमरयुतानि समुद्रतीरजानि । कनकविमलहारभूषिताङ्गी विहर मया सह भीरु काननानि ॥ kusumitatarujālasantatāni bhramarayutāni samudratīrajāni । kanakavimalahārabhūṣitāṅgī vihara mayā saha bhīru kānanāni ॥ O timid one, enjoy walking along with me, with all your body decked in pure gold ornaments, in the forest by the shore of the ocean which is full of trees covered by flowers and humming bees.
	इत्यार्षे वाल्मीकीये श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे विंशस्सर्गः॥ ityārṣē vālmīkīyē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē viṃṡassargaḥ॥ Thus concludes the twentieth Sarga in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 21 In this Sarga, Seetā tells Rāvaṇa that she is the devoted wife of Rāma, and she cannot be separated from Rāma any more than sunlight can be separated from the sun. She makes it clear that he cannot hope for her to be his wife. She advices him to be contented with his wives. She tells him to follow the advice and path of good men and advises him that the best thing for him to do is to take her back to Rāma and seek friendly terms with Rāma. She assures him that Rāma would forgive him, as Rāma is known for his kindness to the people who take refuge in him. Or else, she warns, that he cannot escape the arrows of Rāma, no matter where he hides and that all his Rākshasas and his city will be destroyed by the arrows of Rāma and Lakshmana.
5.21.1 अ 5.21.1 आ 5.21.1 इ 5.21.1 ई	तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सीता रौद्रस्य रक्षसः । आर्ता दीनस्वरा दीनम् प्रत्युवाच शनैर्वचः ॥ tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā sītā raudrasya rakṣasaḥ । ārtā dīnasvarā dīnam pratyuvāca ṡanairvacaḥ ॥ On hearing those words of the fierce Rākshasa, Seetā, feeling distressed and miserable, answered slowly in a doleful voice:
5.21.2 अ 5.21.2 आ 5.21.2 इ 5.21.2 ई 5.21.2 उ 5.21.2 ऊ	दुःखार्ता रुदती सीता वेपमाना तपस्विनी । चिन्तयन्ती वरारोहा पतिमेव पतिव्रता । तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा प्रत्युवाच शुचिस्मिता ॥ duḥkhārtā rudatī sītā vēpamānā tapasvinī । cintayantī varārōhā patimēva pativratā । tṛṇamantarataḥ kṛtvā pratyuvāca ṡucismitā ॥ The suffering, crying and trembling Seetā, of pure smile and beautiful Kaṭee, a devoted wife, overwhelmed by grief, answered him, placing a straw between herself and him, thinking only of her husband:
5.21.3 अ 5.21.3 आ 5.21.3 इ 5.21.3 ई	निवर्तय मनो मत्तः स्वजने क्रियतां मनः । न मां प्रार्थयितुं युक्तम् सुसिद्धिमिव पापकृत् ॥ nivartaya manō mattaḥ svajanē kriyatāṃ manaḥ । na māṃ prārthayituṃ yuktam susiddhimiva pāpakṛt ॥ Give up your hankering for me. Direct your mind towards your own women. You cannot hope for me any more than a sinner can aspire for the ultimate bliss.
5.21.4 अ 5.21.4 आ 5.21.4 इ 5.21.4 ई	अकार्यं न मया कार्यम् एकपत्न्या विगर्हितम् । कुलं सम्प्राप्तया पुण्यम् कुले महति जातया ॥ akāryaṃ na mayā kāryam ēkapatnyā vigarhitam । kulaṃ samprāptayā puṇyam kulē mahati jātayā ॥ What should not be done and would be condemned by the world, will never be done by a wife devoted to a single man, especially by one born into a great family and married into another pious one.
5.21.5 अ 5.21.5 आ 5.21.5 इ 5.21.5 ई	एवमुक्त्वा तु वैदेही रावणं तं यशस्विनी । राक्षसं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा भूयो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ ēvamuktvā tu vaidēhī rāvaṇaṃ taṃ yaṡasvinī । rākṣasaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā bhūyō vacanamabravīt ॥ After saying these words, Vaidēhi of great renown, turned her back to Rāvaṇa, the Rākshasa, and said these words again :
5.21.6 अ 5.21.6 आ 5.21.6 इ 5.21.6 ई	नाहमौपयिकी भार्या परभार्या सती तव । साधु धर्ममवेक्षस्व साधु साधुव्रतं चर ॥ nāhamaupayikī bhāryā parabhāryā satī tava । sādhu dharmamavēkṣasva sādhu sādhuvrataṃ cara ॥ I, being the devoted wife of another man, will not make a good wife for you. Think carefully and deeply about Dharma. Do what virtuous men do.
5.21.7 अ 5.21.7 आ 5.21.7 इ 5.21.7 ई	यथा तव तथान्येषाम् दारा रक्ष्या निशाचर । आत्मानमुपमां कृत्वा स्वेषु दारेषु रम्यताम् ॥ yathā tava tathānyēṣām dārā rakṣyā niṡācara । ātmānamupamāṃ kṛtvā svēṣu dārēṣu ramyatām ॥ O Rākshasa! O Night-Rover! Just like yours, everyone else’s wives deserve to be protected. Think how it would be for you (if your wives are carried off); be contented enjoying your own wives.
5.21.8 अ 5.21.8 आ 5.21.8 इ 5.21.8 ई	अतुष्टं स्वेषु दारेषु चपलं चलितेन्द्रियम् । नयन्ति निकृतिप्रज्ञम् परदाराः पराभवम् ॥ atuṣṭaṃ svēṣu dārēṣu capalaṃ calitēndriyam । nayanti nikṛtiprajñam paradārāḥ parābhavam ॥ The man who is not satisfied with his own wives, whose mind becomes fickle, senses go awry, and whose faculties become impaired will land only in disgrace by (seeking) other’s wives.
5.21.9 अ 5.21.9 आ 5.21.9 इ 5.21.9 ई	इह सन्तो न वा सन्ति सतो वा नानुवर्तसे । तथाहि विपरीता ते बुद्धिराचारवर्जिता ॥ iha santō na vā santi satō vā nānuvartasē । tathāhi viparītā tē buddhirācāravarjitā ॥ Are there no good men here? Or are you not listening to whoever is there? It seems so, given the way your mind has become perverted, distanced from all conventions.
5.21.10 अ 5.21.10 आ 5.21.10 इ 5.21.10 ई	वचो मिथ्याप्रणीतात्मा पथ्यमुक्तं विचक्षणैः । राक्षसानामभावाय त्वं वा न प्रतिपद्यसे ॥ vacō mithyāpraṇītātmā pathyamuktaṃ vicakṣaṇaiḥ । rākṣasānāmabhāvāya tvaṃ vā na pratipadyasē ॥ Or, are you, with your mind given to hallucinations, unable to appreciate the wholesome advice given by the wise, only to see the Rākshasas annihilated?
5.21.11 अ 5.21.11 आ 5.21.11 इ 5.21.11 ई	अकृतात्मानमासाद्य राजानमनये रतम् । समृद्धानि विनश्यन्ति राष्ट्राणि नगराणि च ॥ akṛtātmānamāsādya rājānamanayē ratam । samṛddhāni vinaṡyanti rāṣṭrāṇi nagarāṇi ca ॥ Countries and cities that are otherwise plentiful can get totally ruined under the governance of kings who lose control of their minds and indulge in distractions.
5.21.12 अ 5.21.12 आ 5.21.12 इ 5.21.12 ई	तथेयं त्वां समासाद्य लङ्का रत्नौघसङ्कुला । अपराधात्तवैकस्य नचिराद्विनशिष्यति ॥ tathēyaṃ tvāṃ samāsādya laṅkā ratnaughasaṅkulā । aparādhāttavaikasya nacirādvinaṡiṣyati ॥ Similarly, having got you for a king, this Laṅkā, abundant in every kind of riches, can get ruined in no time because of the indiscretion of just one person, you!
5.21.13 अ 5.21.13 आ 5.21.13 इ 5.21.13 ई	स्वकृतैर्हन्यमानस्य रावणादीर्घदर्शिनः । अभिनन्दन्ति भूतानि विनाशे पापकर्मणः ॥ svakṛtairhanyamānasya rāvaṇādīrghadarṡinaḥ । abhinandanti bhūtāni vināṡē pāpakarmaṇaḥ ॥ All creatures will rejoice, O Rāvaṇa, when they see someone who commits sinful acts perish because of his own faults and myopic vision.
5.21.14 अ 5.21.14 आ 5.21.14 इ 5.21.14 ई	एवं त्वां पापकर्माणम् वक्ष्यन्ति निकृता जनाः । दिष्ट्यैतद्व्यसनं प्राप्तो रौद्र इत्येव हर्षिताः ॥ ēvaṃ tvāṃ pāpakarmāṇam vakṣyanti nikṛtā janāḥ । diṣṭyaitadvyasanaṃ prāptō raudra ityēva harṣitāḥ ॥ The people who have suffered at your hands and from your sinful acts, would (one day) rejoice and exclaim: “It is by good fortune that this cruel one met his ruin!”
5.21.15 अ 5.21.15 आ 5.21.15 इ 5.21.15 ई	शक्या लोभयितुं नाहम् चश्वर्येण धनेन वा । अनन्या राघवेणाहम् भास्करेण प्रभा यथा ॥ ṡakyā lōbhayituṃ nāham caṡvaryēṇa dhanēna vā । ananyā rāghavēṇāham bhāskarēṇa prabhā yathā ॥ It is impossible to tempt me with the offer of riches or lordship. I am as inalienable from Rāghava as sunlight is from the sun.
5.21.16 अ 5.21.16 आ 5.21.16 इ 5.21.16 ई	उपधाय भुजं तस्य लोकनाथस्य सत्कृतम् । कथं नामोपधास्यामि भुजमन्यस्य कस्य चित् ॥ upadhāya bhujaṃ tasya lōkanāthasya satkṛtam । kathaṃ nāmōpadhāsyāmi bhujamanyasya kasya cit ॥ Having rested on the well-respected shoulder of the lord of the worlds, how can I rest on the shoulder of anyone else?
5.21.17 अ 5.21.17 आ 5.21.17 इ 5.21.17 ई	अहमौपयिकी भार्या तस्यैव वसुधापतेः । व्रतस्नातस्य विप्रस्य विद्येव विदितात्मनः ॥ ahamaupayikī bhāryā tasyaiva vasudhāpatēḥ । vratasnātasya viprasya vidyēva viditātmanaḥ ॥ Only he, that lord of the earth, deserves me as his wife, just as only a Brāhmaṇa who has had the ceremonial bath after completing his studies and who has realized the Self, deserves the ultimate knowledge.
5.21.18 अ 5.21.18 आ 5.21.18 इ 5.21.18 ई	साधु रावण रामेण मां समानय दुःखिताम् । वने वाशितया सार्धम् करेण्वेव गजाधिपम् ॥ sādhu rāvaṇa rāmēṇa māṃ samānaya duḥkhitām । vanē vāṡitayā sārdham karēṇvēva gajādhipam ॥ O Rāvaṇa! Unite me, who is mired in sadness, with Rāma, which is the right thing to do, like uniting a female elephant with the lordly elephant in the Vana.
5.21.19 अ 5.21.19 आ 5.21.19 इ 5.21.19 ई	मित्रमौपयिकं कर्तुम् रामः स्थानं परीप्सता । वधं चानिच्छता घोरम् त्वयासौ पुरुषर्षभः ॥ mitramaupayikaṃ kartum rāmaḥ sthānaṃ parīpsatā । vadhaṃ cānicchatā ghōram tvayāsau puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥ You should seek the friendship of Rāma, a bull among men, if you want to remain in your position and want to avoid a dreadful death.
5.21.20 अ 5.21.20 आ 5.21.20 इ 5.21.20 ई	विदितः स हि धर्मज्ञः शरणागतवत्सलः । तेन मैत्री भवतु ते यदि जीवितुमिच्छसि ॥ viditaḥ sa hi dharmajñaḥ ṡaraṇāgatavatsalaḥ । tēna maitrī bhavatu tē yadi jīvitumicchasi ॥ That Dharmajña is broad-minded and is kind and loving towards anyone seeking refuge in him. Seek good terms with him if you want to hang on to your life!
5.21.21 अ 5.21.21 आ 5.21.21 इ 5.21.21 ई	प्रसादयस्व त्वं चैनम् शरणागतवत्सलम् । मां चास्मै नियतो भूत्वा निर्यातयितुमर्हसि ॥ prasādayasva tvaṃ cainam ṡaraṇāgatavatsalam । māṃ cāsmai niyatō bhūtvā niryātayitumarhasi ॥ Plead for his grace, who is kind and loving towards anyone seeking respite in him. Think calmly and take me back to him.
5.21.22 अ 5.21.22 आ 5.21.22 इ 5.21.22 ई	एवं हि ते भवेत्स्वस्ति सम्प्रदाय रघूत्तमे । अन्यथा त्वं हि कुर्वाणो वधं प्राप्स्यसि रावण ॥ ēvaṃ hi tē bhavētsvasti sampradāya raghūttamē । anyathā tvaṃ hi kurvāṇō vadhaṃ prāpsyasi rāvaṇa ॥ This is the only way for you to remain safe and prosper, by giving me back to that foremost of the Raghus. O Rāvaṇa, anything short of that which you may do, would only make you meet with your death!	This intrepid roar of the lioness Seetā must be familiar to the readers, from what she said to Rāvaṇa, when he tried to carry her off in the first place (See Araṇya Kāṇḍa, Sargas 47, 53 and 56).
5.21.23 अ 5.21.23 आ 5.21.23 इ 5.21.23 ई	वर्जयेद्वज्रमुत्सृष्टम् वर्जयेदन्तकश्चिरम् । त्वद्विधं तु न सङ्कृद्धो लोकनाथः स राघवः ॥ varjayēdvajramutsṛṣṭam varjayēdantakaṡciram । tvadvidhaṃ tu na saṅkṛddhō lōkanāthaḥ sa rāghavaḥ ॥ One like you may be left alone by Vajra, and even by lord Yama for a long time, but not by Rāghava, the lord of the worlds, whose wrath has been roused.
5.21.24 अ 5.21.24 आ 5.21.24 इ 5.21.24 ई	रामस्य धनुषः शब्दम् श्रोष्यसि त्वं महास्वनम् । शतक्रतुविसृष्टस्य निर्घोषमशनेरिव ॥ rāmasya dhanuṣaḥ ṡabdam ṡrōṣyasi tvaṃ mahāsvanam । ṡatakratuvisṛṣṭasya nirghōṣamaṡanēriva ॥ You are bound to hear the terrifying sound of the bowstring of Rāma, that falls on the ears like that of the thunderbolt launched by the performer of one hundred Yajñas.
5.21.25 अ 5.21.25 आ 5.21.25 इ 5.21.25 ई	इह शीघ्रं सुपर्वाणो ज्वलितास्या इवोरगाः । इषवो निपतिष्यन्ति रामलक्ष्मणलक्षणाः ॥ iha ṡīghraṃ suparvāṇō jvalitāsyā ivōragāḥ । iṣavō nipatiṣyanti rāmalakṣmaṇalakṣaṇāḥ ॥ Soon enough there will fall here straight-jointed arrows bearing the names of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa like serpents with blazing mouths.
5.21.26 अ 5.21.26 आ 5.21.26 इ 5.21.26 ई	रक्षांसि परिनिघ्नन्तः पुर्यामस्यां समन्ततः । असंपातं करिष्यन्ति पतन्तः कङ्कवाससः ॥ rakṣāṃsi parinighnantaḥ puryāmasyāṃ samantataḥ । asaṃpātaṃ kariṣyanti patantaḥ kaṅkavāsasaḥ ॥ Speeded by the feathers of the Kaṅka, those arrows will rain down without an inch of space left between them, slaughtering the Rākshasas and covering every part of this city.
5.21.27 अ 5.21.27 आ 5.21.27 इ 5.21.27 ई	राक्षसेन्द्रमहासर्पान् स रामगरुडो महान् । उद्धरिष्यति वेगेन वैनतेय इवोरगान् ॥ rākṣasēndramahāsarpān sa rāmagaruḍō mahān । uddhariṣyati vēgēna vainatēya ivōragān ॥ Just as the son of Vinata pounces on the snakes and carries them off, so will that great Garuḍa, Rāma grab the mighty serpents, the Rākshasa Chiefs.
5.21.28 अ 5.21.28 आ 5.21.28 इ 5.21.28 ई	अपनेष्यति मां भर्ता त्वत्तः शीघ्रमरिन्दमः । असुरेभ्यः श्रियं दीप्ताम् विष्णुस्त्रिभिरिव क्रमैः ॥ apanēṣyati māṃ bhartā tvattaḥ ṡīghramarindamaḥ । asurēbhyaḥ ṡriyaṃ dīptām viṣṇustribhiriva kramaiḥ ॥ My husband, the subduer of enemies, will take me away from you as easily as Vishnu did the glowing riches of the Asuras, just with his three strides.
5.21.29 अ 5.21.29 आ 5.21.29 इ 5.21.29 ई	जनस्थाने हतस्थाने निहते रक्षसां बले । अशक्तेन त्वया रक्षः कृतमेतदसाधु वै ॥ janasthānē hatasthānē nihatē rakṣasāṃ balē । aṡaktēna tvayā rakṣaḥ kṛtamētadasādhu vai ॥ When the army of Rākshasas was destroyed, when Janasthāna became a land of the dead, O Rākshasa, you could not do anything but resort to this despicable act.
5.21.30 अ 5.21.30 आ 5.21.30 इ 5.21.30 ई	आश्रमं तु तयोः शून्यम् प्रविश्य नरसिंहयोः । गोचरं गतयोर्भ्रात्रोः अपनीता त्वयाधम ॥ āṡramaṃ tu tayōḥ ṡūnyam praviṡya narasiṃhayōḥ । gōcaraṃ gatayōrbhrātrōḥ apanītā tvayādhama ॥ O base creature! You entered the Āṡrama when it was free of the brothers, the lions among men who happened to go out, and carried me off.
5.21.31 अ 5.21.31 आ 5.21.31 इ 5.21.31 ई	न हि गन्धमुपाघ्राय रामलक्ष्मणयोस्त्वया । शक्यं संदर्शने स्थातुम् शुना शार्दूलयोरिव ॥ na hi gandhamupāghrāya rāmalakṣmaṇayōstvayā । ṡakyaṃ saṃdarṡanē sthātum ṡunā ṡārdūlayōriva ॥ If only you had smelt the presence of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa around, you would not have dared to risk being seen by them, no more than a dog would risk being seen by a pair of tigers.
5.21.32 अ 5.21.32 आ 5.21.32 इ 5.21.32 ई	तस्य ते विग्रहे ताभ्याम् युगग्रहणमस्थिरम् । वृत्रस्येवेन्द्रबाहुभ्याम् बाहोरेकस्य विग्रहे ॥ tasya tē vigrahē tābhyām yugagrahaṇamasthiram । vṛtrasyēvēndrabāhubhyām bāhōrēkasya vigrahē ॥ You can hardly imagine standing off against those two, any more than the one-handed Vritra could ward off that Indra who fought with both hands.
5.21.33 अ 5.21.33 आ 5.21.33 इ 5.21.33 ई	क्षिप्रं तव स नाथो मे रामः सौमित्रिणा सह । तोयमल्पमिवादित्यः प्राणानादास्यते शरैः ॥ kṣipraṃ tava sa nāthō mē rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha । tōyamalpamivādityaḥ prāṇānādāsyatē ṡaraiḥ ॥ Very soon my Lord Rāma and Sowmitri will snuff out your life with their arrows, like the sun does, a shallow pool of water.
5.21.34 अ 5.21.34 आ 5.21.34 इ 5.21.34 ई	गिरिं कुबेरस्य गतोऽथ वालयं सभां गतो वा वरुणस्य राज्ञः । असंशयं दाशरथेर्न मोक्ष्यसे महाद्रुमः कालहतोऽशनेरिव ॥ giriṃ kubērasya gatō'tha vālayaṃ sabhāṃ gatō vā varuṇasya rājñaḥ । asaṃṡayaṃ dāṡarathērna mōkṣyasē mahādrumaḥ kālahatō'ṡanēriva ॥ Your time has come to an end. You cannot escape from Daṡaratha even if you hide on the mountain of Kubēra or in his house, or in the court of Varuṇa, any more than a giant tree can, from lightning.
	इत्यार्षे वाल्मीकीये श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकविंशस्सर्गः॥ ityārṣē vālmīkīyē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ēkaviṃṡassargaḥ॥ Thus concludes the twenty first Sarga in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
