Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 75
Bharata cries out, in the presence of ministers, that he knows nothing of his mother’s plan or of Rāma’s exile, and that he was far away at his maternal grandfather’s house.

Kousalyā hears those cries and recognizes it to be the voice of Bharata. She starts along with Sumitrā to see him. Bharata also, at the same time, heads to Kousalyā’s place. Both cry seeing each other, albeit for different reasons.

Kousalyā, in her agony blames Bharata and utters many a harsh word. Bharata swears that he has no part in it and he shall incur the sin of every possible misdeed, if he had.
2.75.1-2a
दीर्घकालात्समुत्थाय संज्ञां लब्ध्वा च वीर्यवान् ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां दीनामुद्वीक्ष्य मातरम् ॥
सोऽमात्यमध्ये भरतो जननीमभ्यकुत्सयत् ।
dīrghakālātsamutthāya saṃjñāṃ labdhvā ca vīryavān ।
nētrābhyāmaṡrupūrṇābhyāṃ dīnāmudvīkṣya mātaram ॥
sō'mātyamadhyē bharatō jananīmabhyakutsayat ।
The mighty Bharata, getting up after a long while
and regaining his senses,
saw his dispirited mother through his tear-filled eyes,
and rebuked her in the presence of ministers.
2.75.2b-3
राज्यं न कामये जातु मन्त्रये नापि मातरम् ॥
अभिषेकं न जानामि योऽभूद्राज्ञा समीक्षितः ।
विप्रकृष्टेह्यहं देशे शत्रुघ्नसहितोऽवसम् ॥
rājyaṃ na kāmayē jātu mantrayē nāpi mātaram ॥
abhiṣēkaṃ na jānāmi yō'bhūdrājñā samīkṣitaḥ ।
viprakṛṣṭēhyahaṃ dēṡē ṡatrughnasahitō'vasam ॥
I never wanted the kingdom,
nor did I discuss it with my mother.
I was not aware of the crowning
that the King has planned;
for I lived with Ṡatrughna in a far off country.
2.75.4
वनवासं न जानामि रामस्याहं महात्मनः ।
विवासनं वा सौमित्रेस्सीतायाश्च यथाऽभवत् ॥
vanavāsaṃ na jānāmi rāmasyāhaṃ mahātmanaḥ ।
vivāsanaṃ vā saumitrēssītāyāṡca yathā'bhavat ॥
I knew nothing about Mahātma Rāma’s exile to the Vana,
nor did I know how the exiling of
the son of Sumitrā and Seetā had come about.
2.75.5
तथैव क्रोशतस्तस्य भरतस्य महात्मनः ।
कौसल्या शब्दमाज्ञाय सुमित्रामिदमब्रवीत् ॥
tathaiva krōṡatastasya bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ।
kausalyā ṡabdamājñāya sumitrāmidamabravīt ॥
As Mahātma Bharata cried out aloud thus,
Kousalyā recognized his voice and said to Sumitrā:
2.75.6
आगतः क्रूरकार्यायाः कैकेय्या भरतस्सुतः ।
तमहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भरतं दीर्घदर्शिनम् ॥
āgataḥ krūrakāryāyāḥ kaikēyyā bharatassutaḥ ।
tamahaṃ draṣṭumicchāmi bharataṃ dīrghadarṡinam ॥
Bharata, the son of Kaikēyee,
who has acted so cruelly, has come.
I wish to see him, that farsighted Bharata.
The ‘farsighted’ here is obviously a wry comment.
2.75.7
एवमुक्त्वा सुमित्रां सा विवर्णा मलिना कृशा ।
प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र वेपमाना विचेतना ॥
ēvamuktvā sumitrāṃ sā vivarṇā malinā kṛṡā ।
pratasthē bharatō yatra vēpamānā vicētanā ॥
Saying these words to Sumitrā,
she, the pale, the disheveled and the worn out,
started towards the place where Bharata was,
trembling and disoriented.
2.75.8
स तु रामानुजश्चापि शत्रुघ्नसहितस्तदा ।
प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र कौसल्याया निवेशनम् ॥
sa tu rāmānujaṡcāpi ṡatrughnasahitastadā ।
pratasthē bharatō yatra kausalyāyā nivēṡanam ॥
(At the same time), the younger brother of Rāma (Bharata)
too started for Kousalyā’s house, along with Ṡatrughna.
2.75.9-10a
ततश्शत्रुघ्नभरतौ कौसल्यां प्रेक्ष्य दुःखितौ ।
पर्यष्वजेतां दुःखार्तां पतितां नष्टचेतनाम् ॥
रुदन्तौ रुदतीं दुःखात्समेत्यार्यां मनस्विनीम्।
tataṡṡatrughnabharatau kausalyāṃ prēkṣya duḥkhitau ।
paryaṣvajētāṃ duḥkhārtāṃ patitāṃ naṣṭacētanām ॥
rudantau rudatīṃ duḥkhātsamētyāryāṃ manasvinīm।
Seeing her, Ṡatrughna and Bharata were grief-stricken.
They then cried and reached her in their grief
and embraced that self-respecting noble lady,
who fell down in a daze, crying, distressed with grief !
2.75.10b-11
भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं कौसल्या भृशदुःखिता ॥
इदं ते राज्यकामस्य राज्यं प्राप्तमकण्टकम् ।
संप्राप्तं बत कैकेय्या शशीघ्रं क्रूरेण कर्मणा ॥
bharataṃ pratyuvācēdaṃ kausalyā bhṛṡaduḥkhitā ॥
idaṃ tē rājyakāmasya rājyaṃ prāptamakaṇṭakam ।
saṃprāptaṃ bata kaikēyyā ṡaṡīghraṃ krūrēṇa karmaṇā ॥
Kousalyā, in her extreme grief,
responded to Bharata saying:
You got the kingdom that you wanted,
a kingdom that is free from every trouble!
And, how amazingly quick did it come,
thanks to the cruel acts of Kaikēyee!
2.75.12
प्रस्थाप्य चीरवसनं पुत्रं मे वनवासिनम् ।
कैकेयी कं गुणं तत्र पश्यति क्रूरदर्शिनी ॥
prasthāpya cīravasanaṃ putraṃ mē vanavāsinam ।
kaikēyī kaṃ guṇaṃ tatra paṡyati krūradarṡinī ॥
What merit does Kaikēyee of evil vision
see in abandoning my son, clad in bark,
to live in the Vana!
2.75.13
क्षिप्रं मामपि कैकेयी प्रस्थापयितुमर्हति ।
हिरण्यनाभो यत्रास्ते सुतो मे सुमहायशाः ॥
kṣipraṃ māmapi kaikēyī prasthāpayitumarhati ।
hiraṇyanābhō yatrāstē sutō mē sumahāyaṡāḥ ॥
Kaikēyee should send me also, without delay there
where my son of golden navel and supreme renown lives.
2.75.14
अथवा स्वयमेवाहं सुमित्रानुचरा सुखम् ।
अग्निहोत्रं पुरस्कृत्य प्रस्थाप्ये यत्र राघवः ॥
athavā svayamēvāhaṃ sumitrānucarā sukham ।
agnihōtraṃ puraskṛtya prasthāpyē yatra rāghavaḥ ॥
Better still, I shall myself, followed by Sumitrā,
go happily where Rāghava is,
taking the sacred fire with me!
2.75.15
कामं वा स्वयमेवाद्य तत्र मां नेतुमर्हसि ।
यत्रासौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पुत्रो मे तप्यते तपः ॥
kāmaṃ vā svayamēvādya tatra māṃ nētumarhasi ।
yatrāsau puruṣavyāghraḥ putrō mē tapyatē tapaḥ ॥
Or if you so prefer, you can yourself take me there
where he, my son, the tiger among men, is doing Tapa.
2.75.16
इदं हि तव विस्तीर्णं धनधान्यसमाचितम् ।
हस्त्वश्वरथसम्पूर्णं राज्यं निर्यातितं तया ॥
idaṃ hi tava vistīrṇaṃ dhanadhānyasamācitam ।
hastvaṡvarathasampūrṇaṃ rājyaṃ niryātitaṃ tayā ॥
For she has bestowed upon you this vast kingdom,
abounding in wealth and grains,
complete with elephants, horses and chariots!
2.75.17
इत्यादिबहुभिर्वाक्यैः क्रूरैः सम्भर्त्सितोऽनघः ।
विव्यथे भरतस्तीव्रं व्रणे तुद्येव सूचिना ॥
ityādibahubhirvākyaiḥ krūraiḥ sambhartsitō'naghaḥ ।
vivyathē bharatastīvraṃ vraṇē tudyēva sūcinā ॥
Reproached with many a harsh word like these,
Bharata of no blemish suffered agony,
like one who had a needle thrust into his wounds.
There is much to empathize with Bharata than with any other character in the entire Rāmāyaṇa. For, it is one thing to go through the misfortunes of life like everyone else does, and it is another thing to be implied guilty, where one is not. There is nothing worse than being the object of false accusations and misperception.

Another such famously known story of false accusation was that of Krishna being accused by Satrājit, of killing his son for the sake of the jewel of Ṡamantaka.
2.75.18
पपात चरणौ तस्यास्तदा सम्भ्रान्तचेतनः ।
विलप्य बहुधाऽसंज्ञो लब्दसंज्ञस्ततः स्थितः ॥
papāta caraṇau tasyāstadā sambhrāntacētanaḥ ।
vilapya bahudhā'saṃjñō labdasaṃjñastataḥ sthitaḥ ॥
He then fell at her feet, with his mind in a whirl,
and lamented for long, falling into a swoon.
Then he regained his sense and stood motionless.
2.75.19
एवं विलपमानां तां भरतः प्राञ्जलिस्तदा ।
कौसल्यां प्रत्युवाचेदं शोकैर्बहुभिरावृताम् ॥
ēvaṃ vilapamānāṃ tāṃ bharataḥ prāñjalistadā ।
kausalyāṃ pratyuvācēdaṃ ṡōkairbahubhirāvṛtām ॥
Bharata, then, with palms joined in reverence,
responded with these words to Kousalyā
who was crying, beset by many a grief:
2.75.20
आर्ये! कस्मादजानन्तं गर्हसे मामकिल्भिषम् ।
विपुलां च मम प्रीतिं स्थिरां जानासि राघवे ॥
āryē! kasmādajānantaṃ garhasē māmakilbhiṣam ।
vipulāṃ ca mama prītiṃ sthirāṃ jānāsi rāghavē ॥
O revered lady! why do you revile me,
who is guiltless and knew nothing?
You know of my unwavering and ample affection for Rāghava.
2.75.21
कृता शास्त्रानुगा बुद्धिर्माभूत्तस्य कदाचन ।
सत्यसन्धस्सतां श्रेष्ठो यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
kṛtā ṡāstrānugā buddhirmābhūttasya kadācana ।
satyasandhassatāṃ ṡrēṣṭhō yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding
the noble one, the adherent of Truth and
the foremost of good men, has left,
be not counted as having his judgment
in alignment with Ṡastras.
The ‘noble one’ in this Ṡlōka and also in about forty Ṡlōkas after this, refer to Rāma.

These Ṡlōkas indicate everything that was counted as a sin in those times, especially for a king or a person in power.

In these Ṡlōkas, Bharata says that he shall be condemned and shall incur the sin of doing many abhorrent things, had he had any part in exiling Rāma.
2.75.22
प्रेष्यं पापीयसां यातु सूर्यञ्च प्रतिमेहतु ।
हन्तु पादेन गां सुप्तां यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
prēṣyaṃ pāpīyasāṃ yātu sūryañca pratimēhatu ।
hantu pādēna gāṃ suptāṃ yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of serving the sinners,
the sin of defecating sitting facing the sun and
the sin of kicking a sleeping cow with his feet!
2.75.23
कारयित्वा महत्कर्म भर्ता भृत्यमनर्थकम् ।
अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्याऽर्योऽनुमतेगतः ॥
kārayitvā mahatkarma bhartā bhṛtyamanarthakam ।
adharmō yō'sya sō'syāstu yasyā'ryō'numatēgataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of a master who extracts
copious amounts of work from his staff
without giving proper remuneration.
2.75.24
परिपालयमानस्य राज्ञो भूतानि पुत्रवत् ।
ततस्नु दुह्यतां पापं यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
paripālayamānasya rājñō bhūtāni putravat ।
tatasnu duhyatāṃ pāpaṃ yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of committing treachery
against a king who takes good care of
all beings as if they were his own children.
2.75.25
बलिषड्भागमुद्धृत्य नृपस्यारक्षतः प्रजाः ।
अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्यार्थोऽनुमते गतः ॥
baliṣaḍbhāgamuddhṛtya nṛpasyārakṣataḥ prajāḥ ।
adharmō yō'sya sō'syāstu yasyārthō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of a king who
extracts a sixth of the income as tax,
and yet fails to protect his people
in accordance with Dharma.
2.75.26
संश्रुत्य च तपस्विभ्यस्सत्रे वै यज्ञदक्षिणाम् ।
तां विप्रलपतां पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
saṃṡrutya ca tapasvibhyassatrē vai yajñadakṣiṇām ।
tāṃ vipralapatāṃ pāpaṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of one who
reneges on the promise of honorarium
made to Tapasvis at the time of a Yajña.
2.75.27
हस्त्यश्वरथसम्बाधे युद्धे शस्त्रसमाकुले ।
मा स्म कार्षीत्सतां धर्मं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
hastyaṡvarathasambādhē yuddhē ṡastrasamākulē ।
mā sma kārṣītsatāṃ dharmaṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be not counted for discharging the Dharma
as it behooves in a battle field
filled with elephants, horses, chariots and weapons.
2.75.28
उपदिष्टं सुसूक्ष्मार्थं शास्त्रं यत्नेन धीमता ।
स नाशयतु दुष्टात्मा यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
upadiṣṭaṃ susūkṣmārthaṃ ṡāstraṃ yatnēna dhīmatā ।
sa nāṡayatu duṣṭātmā yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of a scoundrel who disregards the
subtleties and nuances of Ṡastras,
that a wise teacher had assiduously imparted in him.
2.75.29
मा च तं व्यूढबाह्वंसं चन्द्रार्कसमतेजसम् ।
द्राक्षीद्राज्यस्थमासीनं यस्यार्योऽनुमतेगतः ॥
mā ca taṃ vyūḍhabāhvaṃsaṃ candrārkasamatējasam ।
drākṣīdrājyasthamāsīnaṃ yasyāryō'numatēgataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one,
the one with broad shoulders and long arms,
the one who is radiant like sun and moon, has left,
not (survive to) see him seated on the throne.
2.75.30
पायसं कृसरं छागं वृथा सोऽश्नातु निर्घृणः ।
गुरूंश्चाप्यवजानातु यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
pāyasaṃ kṛsaraṃ chāgaṃ vṛthā sō'ṡnātu nirghṛṇaḥ ।
gurūṃṡcāpyavajānātu yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, the merciless one,
at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of disrespecting elders
and gorging on Pāyasam, Kṛsara
and goat meat without occasion.
Pāyasam is rice pudding.
Kṛsara is either a dish made by cooking
moong dal along with rice or
by mixing sesame seeds with jaggery.
Pāyasam, Kṛsara and goat meat should not be eaten casually, without occasion.

Pāyasam is reserved for festive and joyous times. Kṛsara is reserved for the time of ritual offerings to the deceased ancestors. Goat meat is reserved for the occasion of Yajñas.



2.75.31
गाश्च स्पृशतु पादेन गुरून्परिवदेत्स्वयम् ।
मित्रे द्रुह्येत सोऽत्यन्तं यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
gāṡca spṛṡatu pādēna gurūnparivadētsvayam ।
mitrē druhyēta sō'tyantaṃ yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of kicking cows with his feet,
of defaming elders on purpose and
of committing unspeakable subterfuge against a friend.
2.75.32
विश्वासात्कथितं किञ्चित्परिवादं मिथः क्वचित् ।
विवृणोतु स दुष्टात्मा यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
viṡvāsātkathitaṃ kiñcitparivādaṃ mithaḥ kvacit ।
vivṛṇōtu sa duṣṭātmā yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
may incur the sin of a wretch,
who divulges what someone shares with to him in full trust.
2.75.33
अकर्ता ह्यकृतज्ञश्च त्यक्ताचाऽत्मा निरपत्रपः ।
लोके भवतु विद्विष्टो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
akartā hyakṛtajñaṡca tyaktācā'tmā nirapatrapaḥ ।
lōkē bhavatu vidviṣṭō yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be condemned in the world as one who commits suicide,
is ungrateful, insensitive and good for nothing.
2.75.34
पुत्रैर्दारैश्च भृत्यैश्च स्वगृहे परिवारितः ।
स एको मृष्टमश्नातु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
putrairdāraiṡca bhṛtyaiṡca svagṛhē parivāritaḥ ।
sa ēkō mṛṣṭamaṡnātu yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of feasting all by oneself in his home
while surrounded by children, wife and household workers.
2.75.35
अप्राप्य सदृशान् दाराननपत्यः प्रमीयताम् ।
अनवाप्य क्रियां धर्म्यां यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
aprāpya sadṛṡān dārānanapatyaḥ pramīyatām ।
anavāpya kriyāṃ dharmyāṃ yasyā'ryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
meet with the fate of dying
without getting married to a good wife,
without having any offspring and
without discharging the responsibilities due upon him.
2.75.36
माऽत्मनस्सन्ततिं द्राक्षीत्स्वेषु दारेषु दुःखितः ।
आयुस्समग्रमप्राप्य यऽस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
mā'tmanassantatiṃ drākṣītsvēṣu dārēṣu duḥkhitaḥ ।
āyussamagramaprāpya ya'syāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be condemned to the grief of not being
blessed with offspring through his lawful wife,
and to a life that ends before it is due.
2.75.37
राजस्त्रीबालवृद्धानां वधे यत्पापमुच्यते ।
भृत्यत्यागे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥
rājastrībālavṛddhānāṃ vadhē yatpāpamucyatē ।
bhṛtyatyāgē ca yatpāpaṃ tatpāpaṃ pratipadyatām ॥
May he incur the sin of killing
a king, women, children and the aged,
and that of abandoning the servants
who depend on him for their livelihood.
2.75.38
लाक्षया मधुमांसेन लोहेन च विषेण च ।
सदैव बिभृयाद्भृत्यान्यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
lākṣayā madhumāṃsēna lōhēna ca viṣēṇa ca ।
sadaiva bibhṛyādbhṛtyānyasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be reduced to supporting his dependants
by trading in lac, liquor, flesh, iron and poison.
2.75.39
सङ्ग्रमे समुपोढे स्म शत्रुपक्षभयङ्करे ।
पलायामानो वध्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
saṅgramē samupōḍhē sma ṡatrupakṣabhayaṅkarē ।
palāyāmānō vadhyēta yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be killed like a warrior who flees the battle field,
just when it reaches its crescendo
of terrorizing the enemy lines.
2.75.40
कपालपाणिः पृथिवीमटतां चीरसंवृतः ।
भिक्षमाणो यथोन्मत्तो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
kapālapāṇiḥ pṛthivīmaṭatāṃ cīrasaṃvṛtaḥ ।
bhikṣamāṇō yathōnmattō yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be damned to wander over the earth
begging like a madman, covered in rags,
with a skull in his hand.
2.75.41
मद्ये प्रसक्तो भवतु स्त्रीष्वक्षेषु च नित्यशः ।
कामक्रोधाभिभूतस्तु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
madyē prasaktō bhavatu strīṣvakṣēṣu ca nityaṡaḥ ।
kāmakrōdhābhibhūtastu yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
become a slave to wine, woman and dice,
having succumbed to lust and anger.
2.75.42
मास्म धर्मे मनो भूयादधर्मं स निषेवताम् ।
अपात्रवर्षी भवतु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
māsma dharmē manō bhūyādadharmaṃ sa niṣēvatām ।
apātravarṣī bhavatu yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
lose the sense of Dharma and become a slave of Adharma,
and his bounty be directed towards the unworthy.
2.75.43
सञ्चितान्यस्य वित्तानि विविधानि सहस्रशः ।
दस्युभिर्विप्रलुप्यन्तां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
sañcitānyasya vittāni vividhāni sahasraṡaḥ ।
dasyubhirvipralupyantāṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be relieved of all the assortment of riches
in their thousands that he had accumulated, by looters.
2.75.44
उभे सन्ध्ये शयानस्य यत्पापं परिकल्प्यते ।
तच्चपापं भवेत्तस्य यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
ubhē sandhyē ṡayānasya yatpāpaṃ parikalpyatē ।
taccapāpaṃ bhavēttasya yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of lying in bed at the
time of the two conjunctions of day and night.
Dawn and dusk are the two conjunctions of day and night.
2.75.45
यदग्निदायके पापं यत्पापं गुरतल्पगे ।
मित्रद्रोहे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥
yadagnidāyakē pāpaṃ yatpāpaṃ guratalpagē ।
mitradrōhē ca yatpāpaṃ tatpāpaṃ pratipadyatām ॥
May he incur the sin of arson,
the sin of violating the sanctity of his teacher’s bed and
the sin of wronging his friend.
2.75.46
देवतानां पित्रूणां च मातापित्रोस्तथैव च ।
मा स्म कार्षीत्स शुश्रूषां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
dēvatānāṃ pitrūṇāṃ ca mātāpitrōstathaiva ca ।
mā sma kārṣītsa ṡuṡrūṣāṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be condemned like one who fails to serve
Dēvas, ancestors, mother and father.
2.75.47
सतां लोकात्सतां कीर्त्यास्सञ्जुष्टात्कर्मणस्तथा ।
भ्रश्यतु क्षिप्रमद्यैव यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
satāṃ lōkātsatāṃ kīrtyāssañjuṣṭātkarmaṇastathā ।
bhraṡyatu kṣipramadyaiva yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be right away, with no delay, be denied
the worlds of virtuous men, the renown they enjoy and
the deeds that are their privilege.
2.75.48
अपास्य मातृशुश्रूषामनर्थे सोऽवतिष्ठताम् ।
दीर्घबाहुर्महावक्षाः यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
apāsya mātṛṡuṡrūṣāmanarthē sō'vatiṣṭhatām ।
dīrghabāhurmahāvakṣāḥ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one,
the one with long arms and broad chest, has left,
be doomed to the perdition of the man
who fails to render loving service to his mother.
2.75.49
बहुपुत्रो दरिद्रश्च ज्वररोगसमन्वितः ।
स भूयात्सतत क्लेशी यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
bahuputrō daridraṡca jvararōgasamanvitaḥ ।
sa bhūyātsatata klēṡī yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
suffer endlessly from fever and sickness and
live in poverty burdened with too many children.
2.75.50
आशामाशंसमानानां दीनानामूर्ध्वचक्षुषाम् ।
अर्थिनां वितथां कुर्याद्यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
āṡāmāṡaṃsamānānāṃ dīnānāmūrdhvacakṣuṣām ।
arthināṃ vitathāṃ kuryādyasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of disappointing the hopes of supplicants
who look up towards him in despondency!
2.75.51
मायया रमतां नित्यं परुषः पिशुनोऽशुचिः ।
राज्ञो भीतस्त्वधर्मात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
māyayā ramatāṃ nityaṃ paruṣaḥ piṡunō'ṡuciḥ ।
rājñō bhītastvadharmātmā yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be condemned to live unkempt,
indulging in falsehoods, given to smearing,
bearing a harsh disposition and
fearing the (wrath of) the king.
2.75.52
ऋतुस्नातां सतीं भार्यामृतुकालानुरोधिनीम् ।
अतिवर्तेत दुष्टात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
ṛtusnātāṃ satīṃ bhāryāmṛtukālānurōdhinīm ।
ativartēta duṣṭātmā yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be the wretch, who neglects the craving of his faithful wife
when she has had bath after her monthly period.
2.75.53
धर्मदारान्परित्यज्य परदारान्निषेवताम् ।
त्यक्तधर्मरतिर्मूढो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
dharmadārānparityajya paradārānniṣēvatām ।
tyaktadharmaratirmūḍhō yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be the idiot, who gives up Dharma
and runs after another man’s wife
discarding his lawfully wedded wife.
2.75.54
विप्रलुप्तप्रजातस्य दुष्कृतं ब्राह्मणस्य यत् ।
तदेव प्रतिपद्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
vipraluptaprajātasya duṣkṛtaṃ brāhmaṇasya yat ।
tadēva pratipadyēta yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be considered as sinful as a Brāhmaṇa
who is not blessed with any offspring.
2.75.55
पानीयदूषके पापं तथैव विषदायके ।
यत्तदेकस्स लभतां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
pānīyadūṣakē pāpaṃ tathaiva viṣadāyakē ।
yattadēkassa labhatāṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur all by himself the combined sins of
polluting drinking water and poisoning someone.
2.75.56
ब्राह्मणायोद्यतां पूजां विहन्तु कलुषेन्द्रियः ।
बालवत्सां च गां दोग्धु यस्यार्यो ऽनुमते गतः ॥
brāhmaṇāyōdyatāṃ pūjāṃ vihantu kaluṣēndriyaḥ ।
bālavatsāṃ ca gāṃ dōgdhu yasyāryō 'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
be counted as one preventing, in perversity,
the honors proposed for a Brāhmaṇa
and milking a cow which has a youngling.
2.75.57
तुर्ष्णार्तं सति पानीये विप्रलम्भेन योजयेत् ।
लभेत तस्य यत्पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
turṣṇārtaṃ sati pānīyē vipralambhēna yōjayēt ।
labhēta tasya yatpāpaṃ yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of denying water
to the thirsty when it is available.
2.75.58
भक्त्या विवदमानेषु मार्गमाश्रित्य पश्यतः ।
तस्य पापेन युज्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः ॥
bhaktyā vivadamānēṣu mārgamāṡritya paṡyataḥ ।
tasya pāpēna yujyēta yasyāryō'numatē gataḥ ॥
May he, at whose bidding the noble one has left,
incur the sin of one who moves on his way, staring
at a fight that divides people.
2.75.59
विहीनां पतिपुत्राभ्यां कौसल्यां पार्थिवात्मजः ।
एवमाश्वासयन्नेव दुःखार्तो निपपात ह ॥
vihīnāṃ patiputrābhyāṃ kausalyāṃ pārthivātmajaḥ ।
ēvamāṡvāsayannēva duḥkhārtō nipapāta ha ॥
The King’s son fell down distraught with grief
just as he was thus assuring Kousalyā,
who was bereft of her husband and son.
2.75.60
तथा तु शपथैः कष्टैश्शपमानमचेतनम् ।
भरतं शोकसन्तप्तं कौसल्या वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥
tathā tu ṡapathaiḥ kaṣṭaiṡṡapamānamacētanam ।
bharataṃ ṡōkasantaptaṃ kausalyā vākyamabravīt ॥
Kousalyā then said to Bharata, who had thus
sworn many a dreadful oath, scorched by grief.
2.75.61
मम दुःखमिदं पुत्र! भूयस्समुपजायते ।
शपथैश्शपमानो हि प्राणानुपरुणत्सि मे ॥
mama duḥkhamidaṃ putra! bhūyassamupajāyatē ।
ṡapathaiṡṡapamānō hi prāṇānuparuṇatsi mē ॥
My grief flares up again, my son;
my heart is harrowed by these oaths you have sworn.
2.75.62
दिष्ट्या न चलितो धर्मादात्मा ते सहलक्ष्मणः ।
वत्स! सत्यप्रतिज्ञो ते सतां लोकमवाप्स्यसि ॥
diṣṭyā na calitō dharmādātmā tē sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
vatsa! satyapratijñō tē satāṃ lōkamavāpsyasi ॥
Thanks be to the Divine Grace,
your mind, just as Lakshmaṇa’s,
is not shaken from the path of Dharma.
Dear child, you truly are wedded to Truth.
You shall attain the worlds
that are the privilege of all good people.
2.75.63
इत्युक्त्वा चाङ्कमानीय भरतं भ्रातृवत्सलम् ।
परिष्वज्य महाबाहुं रुरोद भृशदुःखिता ॥
ityuktvā cāṅkamānīya bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalam ।
pariṣvajya mahābāhuṃ rurōda bhṛṡaduḥkhitā ॥
Saying this and taking Bharata
who loved his brother, on to her lap
and embracing him of the mighty arm,
she wept in an outburst of grief.
2.75.64
एवं विलपमानस्य दुःखार्तस्य महात्मनः ।
मोहाच्च शोकसम्रोधाद्बभूव लुलितं मनः ॥
ēvaṃ vilapamānasya duḥkhārtasya mahātmanaḥ ।
mōhācca ṡōkasamrōdhādbabhūva lulitaṃ manaḥ ॥
And the mind of the mighty man
who was sad and lamenting thus became
pulverized by the pounding of grief and dismay.
2.75.65
लालप्यमानस्य विचेतनस्य
प्रणष्टबुद्धेः पतितस्य भूमौ ।
मुहुर्मुहुर्निश्श्वसतश्च घर्मं
सा तस्य शोकेन जगाम रात्रिः ॥
lālapyamānasya vicētanasya
praṇaṣṭabuddhēḥ patitasya bhūmau ।
muhurmuhurniṡṡvasataṡca gharmaṃ
sā tasya ṡōkēna jagāma rātriḥ ॥
The night passed in gloom,
as he lay on the ground, crying,
heaving hot sighs again and again,
with his senses numbed and faculties lost.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये
अयोध्याकाण्डे पञ्चसप्ततितमस्सर्गः ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcasaptatitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the seventy fifth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
