Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 1
In this Sarga, The Ṛshis of Daṇḍaka forest welcome Rāma and honor him with fruits, roots and flowers.
They tell him that he is the king regardless of whether he lives in the city or in the Vana. They ask him to protect them since they happened to live in his realm, like one would a fetus in the womb. |

प्रविश्य तु महारण्यं
दण्डकारण्यमात्मवान् । ददर्श रामो दुर्धर्षः तापसाश्रममण्डलम् ॥
praviṡya tu mahāraṇyaṃ
daṇḍakāraṇyamātmavān । dadarṡa rāmō durdharṣaḥ tāpasāṡramamaṇḍalam ॥
Rāma, resolute and invincible,
entered the great Daṇḍaka forest and saw the Āṡramas of Tapasvis. |
Vālmeeki started Ayōdhyā Kanda with elaborate description of the city of Ayōdhyā. And he starts Araṇya Kanda, aptly, with the description of the Araṇya.

कुशचीरपरिक्षिप्तं
ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समावृतम् । यथा प्रदीप्तं दुर्दर्शं गगने सूर्यमण्डलम् ॥
kuṡacīraparikṣiptaṃ
brāhmyā lakṣmyā samāvṛtam । yathā pradīptaṃ durdarṡaṃ gaganē sūryamaṇḍalam ॥
With robes of bark and Kuṡa grass seen everywhere,
the splendor of the Vedic way of life (in the Āṡramas) was blinding like the dazzle of the sun in the sky. |

शरण्यं सर्वभूतानां
सुसंमृष्टाजिरं सदा । मृगैर्बहुभिराकीर्णं पक्षिसङ्घैस्समावृतम् ॥
ṡaraṇyaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ
susaṃmṛṣṭājiraṃ sadā । mṛgairbahubhirākīrṇaṃ pakṣisaṅghaissamāvṛtam ॥
With its well kept grounds,
with bands of deer everywhere, and covered by many flocks of birds, it (the commune of the Āṡramas), was like an inviting sanctuary for every creature. |

पूजितं च प्रनृत्तं च
नित्यमप्सरसां गणैः । विशालैरग्निशरणैः स्रुग्भाण्डैरजिनैः कुशैः ॥ समिद्भिस्तोयकलशैः फलमूलैश्च शोभितम् । आरण्यैश्च महावृक्षैः पुण्यैस्स्वादुफलैर्वृतम् ॥
pūjitaṃ ca pranṛttaṃ ca
nityamapsarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ । viṡālairagniṡaraṇaiḥ srugbhāṇḍairajinaiḥ kuṡaiḥ ॥ samidbhistōyakalaṡaiḥ phalamūlaiṡca ṡōbhitam । āraṇyaiṡca mahāvṛkṣaiḥ puṇyaissvāduphalairvṛtam ॥
It was honored by the Apsaras who came there to dance.
It was comely with its big Hōma Kuṇḍas, Srukkus, pots, deer-skins, tufts of Kuṡa grass, Samidhas, Kalaṡas with water, tubers, fruits, and the holy and fruit-bearing giant trees of the forest. |

बलिहोमार्चितं पुण्यं
ब्रह्मघोषनिनादितम् । पुष्पैश्चान्यैः परिक्षिप्तं पद्मिन्या च सपद्मया ॥
balihōmārcitaṃ puṇyaṃ
brahmaghōṣanināditam । puṣpaiṡcānyaiḥ parikṣiptaṃ padminyā ca sapadmayā ॥
That sacred place was filled with the
offerings made to spirits and Dēvas. It reverberated with the chanting of Vēdas. It was filled with a variety of flowers and vines full of lotuses. |

फलमूलाशनैर्दान्तैः
चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरैः । सूर्यवैश्वानराभैश्च पुराणैर्मुनिभिर्वुतम् ॥
phalamūlāṡanairdāntaiḥ
cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaraiḥ । sūryavaiṡvānarābhaiṡca purāṇairmunibhirvutam ॥
It was filled with venerable Munis,
who had mastered their senses, who were glowing with the luster of sun and fire, who lived on roots and fruits and wore deer skin for a garment. |

पुण्यैश्च नियताहारैः
शोभितं परमर्षिभिः । तद्ब्रह्मभवनप्रख्यं ब्रह्मघोषनिनादितम् ॥
puṇyaiṡca niyatāhāraiḥ
ṡōbhitaṃ paramarṣibhiḥ । tadbrahmabhavanaprakhyaṃ brahmaghōṣanināditam ॥
It was adorned by the Great Ṛshis
who ate sparingly and radiated holiness. It looked like the abode of Brahma Himself, reverberating with the chants of Vēdas. |

| 3.1.9-10a |
ब्रह्मविद्भिर्महाभागैः
ब्राह्मणैरुपशोभितम् । तद्दृष्ट्वा राघवः श्रीमान् तापसाश्रममण्डलम् ॥ अभ्यगच्छन्महातेजा विज्यं कृत्वा महद्धनुः ।
brahmavidbhirmahābhāgaiḥ
brāhmaṇairupaṡōbhitam । taddṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ ṡrīmān tāpasāṡramamaṇḍalam ॥ abhyagacchanmahātējā vijyaṃ kṛtvā mahaddhanuḥ ।
Upon seeing the blessed Brāhmaṇas,
who realized Brahman, adorning it, the blessed and supremely radiant Rāghava approached that settlement of Āṡramas of Tapasvis after removing the string from his great bow. |

दिव्यज्ञानोपपन्नास्ते
रामं दृष्ट्वा महर्षयः ॥ अभ्यगच्छन्स्तदा प्रीता वैदेहीं च यशस्विनीम् ।
divyajñānōpapannāstē
rāmaṃ dṛṣṭvā maharṣayaḥ ॥ abhyagacchanstadā prītā vaidēhīṃ ca yaṡasvinīm ।
The Maharshis, rich in the knowledge of divinity,
were happy to see Rāma and the famed Seetā and went forward to meet them. |

| 3.1.11b-12 |
ते तं सोममिवोद्यन्तं
दृष्ट्वा वै धर्मचारिणम् ॥ लक्ष्मणं चैव दृष्ट्वा तु वैदेहीं च यशस्विनीम् । मङ्गलानि प्रयुञ्जानाः प्रत्यगृह्णन्दृढव्रताः ॥
tē taṃ sōmamivōdyantaṃ
dṛṣṭvā vai dharmacāriṇam ॥ lakṣmaṇaṃ caiva dṛṣṭvā tu vaidēhīṃ ca yaṡasvinīm । maṅgalāni prayuñjānāḥ pratyagṛhṇandṛḍhavratāḥ ॥
Those souls of steadfast vows,
received him, the follower of Dharma who resembled rising moon, and also Lakshmaṇa and the renowned princess of Vidēha, with the chanting of blessings. |

रूपसंहननं लक्ष्मीं
सौकुमार्यं सुवेषताम् । ददृशुर्विस्मिताकारा रामस्य वनवासिनः ॥
rūpasaṃhananaṃ lakṣmīṃ
saukumāryaṃ suvēṣatām । dadṛṡurvismitākārā rāmasya vanavāsinaḥ ॥
They, who lived in the Vana, froze in amazement
at the perfectly proportioned, enchanting and delicate body of Rāma and at the elegance of his appearance. |

| 3.1.14 |
वैदेहीं लक्ष्मणं रामं
नेत्रैरनिमिषैरिव । आश्चर्यभूतान्ददृशुः सर्वे ते वनचारिणः ॥
vaidēhīṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ rāmaṃ
nētrairanimiṣairiva । āṡcaryabhūtāndadṛṡuḥ sarvē tē vanacāriṇaḥ ॥
Those dwellers of Vana, beheld the amazing
Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and the princess of Vidēha without blinking their eyes, like Dēvas.
Dēvas, unlike humans, never blink their eyes.

| 3.1.15 |
अत्रैनं हि महाभागाः
सर्वभूतहिते रताः । अतिथिं पर्णशालायां राघवं संन्यवेशयन् ॥
atrainaṃ hi mahābhāgāḥ
sarvabhūtahitē ratāḥ । atithiṃ parṇaṡālāyāṃ rāghavaṃ saṃnyavēṡayan ॥
Those highly blessed souls,
who were interested in the welfare of every being, arranged for Rāghava to stay in one of the leaf covered cottages as their guest. |

| 3.1.16 |
ततो रामस्य सत्कृत्य
विधिना पावकोपमाः । आजह्रुस्ते महाभागाः सलिलं धर्मचारिणः ॥
tatō rāmasya satkṛtya
vidhinā pāvakōpamāḥ । ājahrustē mahābhāgāḥ salilaṃ dharmacāriṇaḥ ॥
Then those highly blessed souls, followers of Dharma,
who resembled fire (in their radiance), honored Rāma in the customary manner, offering water. |

| 3.1.17 |
मङ्गलानि प्रयुञ्जानाः
मुदा परमया युताः पुष्पं मूलं फलं सर्वम् आश्रमं च महात्मनः । निवेदयित्वा धर्मज्ञास्ते तु प्राञ्जलयोऽब्रुवन् ॥
maṅgalāni prayuñjānāḥ
mudā paramayā yutāḥ puṣpaṃ mūlaṃ phalaṃ sarvam āṡramaṃ ca mahātmanaḥ । nivēdayitvā dharmajñāstē tu prāñjalayō'bruvan ॥
They, the Dharmajñas, greatly delighted,
invoked blessings and offered that Mahātma everything including flowers, roots, fruits and Āṡramas, and said with palms joined in reverence: |

धर्मपालो जनस्यास्य
शरण्यश्च महायशाः । पूजनीयश्च मान्यश्च राजा दण्डधरो गुरुः ॥
dharmapālō janasyāsya
ṡaraṇyaṡca mahāyaṡāḥ । pūjanīyaṡca mānyaṡca rājā daṇḍadharō guruḥ ॥
A renowned king maintains Dharma.
He is the ultimate resort for all the people. He reigns supreme, wielding the rod and is respected and highly regarded. |

| 3.1.19 |
इन्द्रस्येह चतुर्भागः
प्रजा रक्षति राघव । राजा तस्माद्वरान्भोगान् रम्यान् भुङक्ते नमस्कृतः ॥
indrasyēha caturbhāgaḥ
prajā rakṣati rāghava । rājā tasmādvarānbhōgān ramyān bhuṅaktē namaskṛtaḥ ॥
O Rāghava! It is a quarter of (the power of) Indra,
(in the form of a king) that protects the people! Hence he receives the praise that he does and enjoys the exquisite and best luxuries. |

| 3.1.20 |
ते वयं भवता रक्ष्या
भवद्विषयवासिनः । नगरस्थो वनस्थो वा त्वं नो राजा जनेश्वरः ॥
tē vayaṃ bhavatā rakṣyā
bhavadviṣayavāsinaḥ । nagarasthō vanasthō vā tvaṃ nō rājā janēṡvaraḥ ॥
Hence, we, who live in this realm of yours
deserve to be protected by you. Regardless of whether you are in the city or in the Vana, you, the lord of people, are our king! |

| 3.1.21 |
न्यस्तदण्डा वयं राजन्
जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः । रक्षणीयास्त्वया शश्वत् गर्भभूतास्तपोधनाः ॥
nyastadaṇḍā vayaṃ rājan
jitakrōdhā jitēndriyāḥ । rakṣaṇīyāstvayā ṡaṡvat garbhabhūtāstapōdhanāḥ ॥
O king! Having mastered our senses and
having conquered our anger, we abjured the rod. We now (merely) hold the wealth of Tapa. We should be ever protected by you like the fetus in a womb. |

| 3.1.22 |
एवमुक्त्वा फलैर्मूलैः
पुष्पैर्वन्यैश्च राघवम् । अन्यैश्च विविधाहारैः सलक्ष्मणमपूजयन् ॥
ēvamuktvā phalairmūlaiḥ
puṣpairvanyaiṡca rāghavam । anyaiṡca vividhāhāraiḥ salakṣmaṇamapūjayan ॥
Saying thus, they honored
Rāghava, and Lakshmaṇa along with him, giving fruits, roots and wild flowers and a variety of other food items. |

| 3.1.23 |
तथान्ये तापसास्सिद्धा
रामं वैश्वानरोपमाः । न्यायवृत्ता यथान्यायं तर्पयामासुरीश्वरम् ॥
tathānyē tāpasāssiddhā
rāmaṃ vaiṡvānarōpamāḥ । nyāyavṛttā yathānyāyaṃ tarpayāmāsurīṡvaram ॥
Other Tapasvis and Siddhas also,
who were glowing with the radiance of fire and who led just lives honored that lord in a fitting manner. |

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे
वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे प्रथमस्सर्गः ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē
vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the first Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Vālmeeki. |
