Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 74 In this Sarga, on their way to meet Sugreeva, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa come across the Āṡrama of Ṡabari. Ṡabari receives them with due honors and Rāma inquires of her wellbeing. Ṡabari tells them that her Gurus had told her that Rāma would visit her someday and that she should give him all honors, and then she would attain the best of the imperishable worlds. Rāma says that he would like to see for himself the great glory of hers which he had heard about from Kabandha. Then Ṡabari shows Rāma and Lakshmaṇa that entire Vana, in which the Maharshis whom she served had lived. She shows them the Vēdi which was used by them, radiating light in all directions, and the clothes worn by those Maharshis that still remained on the trees even to that day. Then Ṡabari seeks Rāma’s permission to relinquish her worn-out body, consigns herself to the fire and rises like a blazing fire and ascends to the heaven with divine garments and ornaments, lighting up that entire area.
3.74.1	तौ कबन्धेन तं मार्गम् पम्पाया दर्शितं वने । आतस्थतुर्दिशं गृह्य प्रतीचीं नृवरात्मजौ ॥ tau kabandhēna taṃ mārgam pampāyā darṡitaṃ vanē । ātasthaturdiṡaṃ gṛhya pratīcīṃ nṛvarātmajau ॥ Turning to the westerly direction, the two sons of the eminent king followed the route to Pampa, in that Vana, shown by Kabandha.
3.74.2	तौ शैलेष्वाचितानेकान् क्षौद्रकल्पफलान्द्रुमान् । वीक्षन्तौ जग्मतुर्द्रष्टुम् सुग्रीवं रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥ tau ṡailēṣvācitānēkān kṣaudrakalpaphalāndrumān । vīkṣantau jagmaturdraṣṭum sugrīvaṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥ Rāma and Lakshmaṇa went on, to meet Sugreeva. watching the trees that grew on the hills that bore honey-sweet fruit.
3.74.3	कृत्वा च शैलपृष्ठे तु तौ वासं रामलक्ष्मणौ । पम्पायाः पश्चिमं तीरम् राघवावुपतस्थतुः ॥ kṛtvā ca ṡailapṛṣṭhē tu tau vāsaṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau । pampāyāḥ paṡcimaṃ tīram rāghavāvupatasthatuḥ ॥ Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, the descendants of Raghu, after resting a while on the top of the mountain, reached the western shore of Pampa.
3.74.4	तौ पुष्करिण्याः पम्पायाः तीरमासाद्य पश्चिमम् । अपश्यतां ततस्तत्र शबर्या रम्यमाश्रमम् ॥ tau puṣkariṇyāḥ pampāyāḥ tīramāsādya paṡcimam । apaṡyatāṃ tatastatra ṡabaryā ramyamāṡramam ॥ After reaching the western shore of lake Pampa, they saw the comely Āṡrama of Ṡabari.
3.74.5	तौ तमाश्रममासाद्य द्रुमैर्बहुभीरावृतम् । सुरम्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ शबरीमभ्युपेयतुः ॥ tau tamāṡramamāsādya drumairbahubhīrāvṛtam । suramyamabhivīkṣantau ṡabarīmabhyupēyatuḥ ॥ Then, reaching and marveling at the extremely beautiful Āṡrama that was surrounded by many trees, both of them went near Ṡabari.
3.74.6	तौ च दृष्ट्वा तदा सिद्धा समुत्थाय कृताञ्जलिः । रामस्य पादौ जग्राह लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ॥ tau ca dṛṣṭvā tadā siddhā samutthāya kṛtāñjaliḥ । rāmasya pādau jagrāha lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ ॥ On seeing them, she, the Siddha, got up with palms joined in reverence and touched the feet of sagacious Rāma and Lakshmaṇa.	Yes, women also became Siddhas, lived alone by themselves and had Āṡramas of their own.
3.74.7	पाद्यमाचमनीयं च सर्वं प्रादाद्यथाविधि । तामुवाच ततो रामः श्रमणीं संशितव्रताम् ॥ pādyamācamanīyaṃ ca sarvaṃ prādādyathāvidhi । tāmuvāca tatō rāmaḥ ṡramaṇīṃ saṃṡitavratām ॥ She gave, in a customary manner, water to wash feet and water to drink. Then Rāma said to that anchorite of severe vows:
3.74.8	कच्चित्ते निर्जिता विघ्नाः कच्चित्ते वर्धते तपः । कच्चित्ते नियतः क्रोध आहारश्च तपोधने ॥ kaccittē nirjitā vighnāḥ kaccittē vardhatē tapaḥ । kaccittē niyataḥ krōdha āhāraṡca tapōdhanē ॥ O you rich in Tapa! I hope that your Tapa is going well and that you are able to keep your diet and temper in control, overcoming all impediments!
3.74.9	कच्चित्ते नियमाः प्राप्ताः कच्चित्ते मनसः सुखम् । कच्चित्ते गुरुशुश्रूषा सफला चारुभाषिणि ॥ kaccittē niyamāḥ prāptāḥ kaccittē manasaḥ sukham । kaccittē guruṡuṡrūṣā saphalā cārubhāṣiṇi ॥ O you of charming speech! I hope you are able to make all observances, and your mind stays serene, and your service to the Gurus bore fruit!
3.74.10	रामेण तापसी पृष्टा सा सिद्धा सिद्धसम्मता । शशंस शबरी वृद्धा रामाय प्रत्युपस्थिता ॥ rāmēṇa tāpasī pṛṣṭā sā siddhā siddhasammatā । ṡaṡaṃsa ṡabarī vṛddhā rāmāya pratyupasthitā ॥ Thus inquired by Rāma, the ripe Ṡabari, a Tapasvi and a Siddha who was well regarded by all Siddhas, responded to Rāma, standing in front of him:
3.74.11	अद्य प्राप्ता तपस्सिद्धिः तव संदर्शनान्मया, अद्य मे सफलं तप्तम् गुरवश्च सुपूजिताः ॥ adya prāptā tapassiddhiḥ tava saṃdarṡanānmayā, adya mē saphalaṃ taptam guravaṡca supūjitāḥ ॥ Today my Tapa has borne fruit in my meeting you. Today, my pursuit became successful and the Gurus have been truly served.
3.74.12	अद्य मे सफलं जन्म स्वर्गश्चैव भविष्यति । त्वयि देववरे राम पूजिते पुरुषर्षभ ॥ adya mē saphalaṃ janma svargaṡcaiva bhaviṣyati । tvayi dēvavarē rāma pūjitē puruṣarṣabha ॥ O Rāma! O bull among men! Today, by serving you, O best among Dēvas, my life is fulfilled, and I am destined to nothing but heaven.
3.74.13	चक्षुषा तव सौम्येन पूताऽस्मि रघुनन्दन । गमिष्याम्यक्षयान्लोकान् त्वत्प्रसादादरिन्दम ॥ cakṣuṣā tava saumyēna pūtā'smi raghunandana । gamiṣyāmyakṣayānlōkān tvatprasādādarindama ॥ O delight of Raghus! By the glances of your gentle eyes, I am purified! O subjugator of foes! By your grace, I would reach the imperishable worlds.
3.74.14	चित्रकूटं त्वयि प्राप्ते विमानैरतुलप्रभैः । इतस्ते दिवमारूढा यानहं पर्यचारिषम् ॥ citrakūṭaṃ tvayi prāptē vimānairatulaprabhaiḥ । itastē divamārūḍhā yānahaṃ paryacāriṣam ॥ The Maharshis whom I served left this place to heaven on supremely dazzling Vimānas, at the same time you arrived in Citrakūṭa.
3.74.15-16	तैश्चाहमुक्ता धर्मज्ञैः महाभागैर्महर्षिभिः । आगमिष्यति ते रामः सुपुण्यमिममाश्रमम् । स ते प्रतिग्रहीतव्यः सौमित्रिसहितोऽतिथिः । तं च दृष्ट्वा वरान्लोकान् अक्षयांस्त्वं गमिष्यसि ॥ taiṡcāhamuktā dharmajñaiḥ mahābhāgairmaharṣibhiḥ । āgamiṣyati tē rāmaḥ supuṇyamimamāṡramam । sa tē pratigrahītavyaḥ saumitrisahitō'tithiḥ । taṃ ca dṛṣṭvā varānlōkān akṣayāṃstvaṃ gamiṣyasi ॥ I was told by those blessed Maharshis who knew Dharma: “Rāma will come one day to this auspicious Āṡrama; you shall receive him and Sowmitri with all honors due to a guest. After seeing them, you will reach the best of the imperishable worlds.”
3.74.17	मया तु विविधं वन्यम् सञ्चितं पुरुषर्षभ । तवार्थे पुरुषव्याघ्र पम्पायास्तीरसम्भवम् ॥ mayā tu vividhaṃ vanyam sañcitaṃ puruṣarṣabha । tavārthē puruṣavyāghra pampāyāstīrasambhavam ॥ I have gathered, O bull among men, many a produce of the Vana that grow on the banks of Pampa, for you.
3.74.18	एवमुक्तस्स धर्मात्मा शबर्या शबरीमिदम् । राघवः प्राह विज्ञाने तां नित्यमबहिष्कृताम् ॥ ēvamuktassa dharmātmā ṡabaryā ṡabarīmidam । rāghavaḥ prāha vijñānē tāṃ nityamabahiṣkṛtām ॥ Thus told by Ṡabari, Rāghava, the Dharmātma, said to her who pursued Jñāna without ever distancing herself from it:
3.74.19	दनोस्सकाशात्तत्त्वेन प्रभावं ते महात्मनः । श्रुतं प्रत्यक्षमिच्छामि सन्द्रष्टुं यदि मन्यसे ॥ danōssakāṡāttattvēna prabhāvaṃ tē mahātmanaḥ । ṡrutaṃ pratyakṣamicchāmi sandraṣṭuṃ yadi manyasē ॥ If you will, I would like to see for myself, your glory, as I heard it directly from Danu, the Mahatma.
3.74.20	एतत्तु वचनं श्रुत्ता रामवक्त्राद्विनिस्सृतम् । शबरी दर्शयामास तावुभौ तद्वनं महत् ॥ ētattu vacanaṃ ṡruttā rāmavaktrādvinissṛtam । ṡabarī darṡayāmāsa tāvubhau tadvanaṃ mahat ॥ Hearing those words that came out of Rāma’s mouth, Ṡabari showed both of them that great Vana.
3.74.21	पश्य मेघघनप्रख्यम् मृगपक्षिसमाकुलम् । मतङ्गवनमित्येव विश्रुतं रघुनन्दन ॥ paṡya mēghaghanaprakhyam mṛgapakṣisamākulam । mataṅgavanamityēva viṡrutaṃ raghunandana ॥ O delight of Raghus! See this Vana, well known as Mataṅga Vana that is splendid like a band of clouds, abundant with beasts and birds.
3.74.22	इह ते भावितात्मानो गुरवो मे महाद्युते । जुहवाञ्चक्रिरे तीर्थम् मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रपूजितम् ॥ iha tē bhāvitātmānō guravō mē mahādyutē । juhavāñcakrirē tīrtham mantravanmantrapūjitam ॥ Here my Gurus, the purified selves of great radiance, performed Yajñas with water that has spiritual power fortified by their Mantras.
3.74.23	इयं प्रत्यक्थ्सली वेदिः यत्र ते मे सुसत्कृताः । पुष्पोपहारं कुर्वन्ति श्रमादुद्वेपिभिः करैः ॥ iyaṃ pratyakthsalī vēdiḥ yatra tē mē susatkṛtāḥ । puṣpōpahāraṃ kurvanti ṡramādudvēpibhiḥ karaiḥ ॥ This, on the western side, is the Vēdi that I had prepared with all the care, where flowers were offered with difficulty by the shaking frail hands (of the Maharshis).
3.74.24	तेषां तपःप्रभावेण पश्याद्यापि रघूद्वह । द्योतयन्ति दिशस्सर्वाः श्रिया वेद्योऽतुलप्रभाः ॥ tēṣāṃ tapaḥprabhāvēṇa paṡyādyāpi raghūdvaha । dyōtayanti diṡassarvāḥ ṡriyā vēdyō'tulaprabhāḥ ॥ O Rāma, see how all the cardinals shine still with the unparalleled luminescence from those Vēdis, because of the power of the Tapa (of Maharshis).
3.74.25	अशक्नुवद्भिस्तैर्गन्तुम् उपवासश्रमालसैः । चिन्तितेऽभ्यागतान्पश्य सहितान्सप्तसागरान् ॥ aṡaknuvadbhistairgantum upavāsaṡramālasaiḥ । cintitē'bhyāgatānpaṡya sahitānsaptasāgarān ॥ See how the seven seas came here together, when they just meditated upon them, unable to go there, being frail and worn-out from fasting,
3.74.26	कृताभिषेकैस्तैर्न्यस्ता वल्कलाः पादपेष्विह । अद्यापि नावशुष्यन्ति प्रदेशे रघुनन्दन ॥ kṛtābhiṣēkaistairnyastā valkalāḥ pādapēṣviha । adyāpi nāvaṡuṣyanti pradēṡē raghunandana ॥ O delight of Raghus! The robes of bark, left on these trees after they had taken bath, remain wet to this day!
3.74.27	देवकार्याणि कुर्वद्भिः यानीमानि कृतानि वै । पुष्पैःकुवलयैस्सार्धम् म्लानत्वं नोपयान्ति वै ॥ dēvakāryāṇi kurvadbhiḥ yānīmāni kṛtāni vai । puṣpaiḥkuvalayaissārdham mlānatvaṃ nōpayānti vai ॥ Flowers including lilies that they offered in the many divine rituals they performed still remain fresh without wilting.
3.74.28	कृत्स्नं वनमिदं दृष्टम् श्रोतव्यं च श्रुतं त्वया । तदिच्छाम्यभ्यनुज्ञाता त्यक्तुमेतत्कलेबरम् ॥ kṛtsnaṃ vanamidaṃ dṛṣṭam ṡrōtavyaṃ ca ṡrutaṃ tvayā । tadicchāmyabhyanujñātā tyaktumētatkalēbaram ॥ Now that you have seen this Vana in its entirety and heard whatever is to be said of it, I would like to relinquish this body with your permission.
3.74.29	तेषामिच्छाम्यहं गन्तुम् समीपं भावितात्मनाम् । मुनीनामाश्रमो येषाम् अहं च परिचारिणी ॥ tēṣāmicchāmyahaṃ gantum samīpaṃ bhāvitātmanām । munīnāmāṡramō yēṣām ahaṃ ca paricāriṇī ॥ I would like to join those Munis who realized the self, whom I have served in this Āṡrama.
3.74.30	धर्मिष्ठं तु वचश्श्रुत्वा राघवस्सहलक्ष्मणः । प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे आश्चर्यमिति तत्त्वतः ॥ dharmiṣṭhaṃ tu vacaṡṡrutvā rāghavassahalakṣmaṇaḥ । praharṣamatulaṃ lēbhē āṡcaryamiti tattvataḥ ॥ Hearing these words from her, an adherent of Dharma, Rāghava, along with Lakshmaṇa felt very happy and said, ‘it is truly amazing!’
3.74.31	तामुवाच ततो रामः श्रमणीं संशितव्रताम् । अर्चितोऽहं त्वया भक्त्या गच्छकामं यथासुखम् ॥ tāmuvāca tatō rāmaḥ ṡramaṇīṃ saṃṡitavratām । arcitō'haṃ tvayā bhaktyā gacchakāmaṃ yathāsukham ॥ Then Rāma said to her, the anchorite who practiced severe vows ‘Thank you for treating me with all attention; yes, please take leave as you wish!’
3.74.32-33	इत्युक्ता जटिला वृद्धा चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरा । तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते शबरी देहं जीर्णं जिहासती । अनुज्ञाता तु रामेण हुत्वाऽऽत्मानं हुताशने । ज्वलत्पावकसङ्काशा स्वर्गमेव जगाम सा ॥ ityuktā jaṭilā vṛddhā cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarā । tasminmuhūrtē ṡabarī dēhaṃ jīrṇaṃ jihāsatī । anujñātā tu rāmēṇa hutvā''tmānaṃ hutāṡanē । jvalatpāvakasaṅkāṡā svargamēva jagāma sā ॥ Told thus, the ripe Ṡabari with matted locks and robes of deer skin wishing to abjure her worn-out body and having obtained the consent of Rāma, consigned herself to fire and ascended to heaven like a flaming fire.
3.74.34	दिव्याभरणसंयुक्ता दिव्यमाल्यानुलेपना । दिव्याम्बरधरा तत्र बभूव प्रियदर्शना । विराजयन्ती तं देशम् विद्युत्सौदामिनी यथा ॥ divyābharaṇasaṃyuktā divyamālyānulēpanā । divyāmbaradharā tatra babhūva priyadarṡanā । virājayantī taṃ dēṡam vidyutsaudāminī yathā ॥ Adorned with divine jewels, divine garlands, smeared with divine unguents and clad in divine garments, she was a feast to the eyes lighting up that entire area like a lightning spark.
3.74.35	यत्र ते सुकृतात्मानो विहरन्ति महर्षयः । तत्पुण्यं शबरी स्थानम् जगामात्मसमाधिना ॥ yatra tē sukṛtātmānō viharanti maharṣayaḥ । tatpuṇyaṃ ṡabarī sthānam jagāmātmasamādhinā ॥ Ṡabari, with the power of her own Tapa, went to that auspicious place where all the Maharshis, who are embodiments of good deeds, dwell.
	इत्यार्षे वाल्मीकीये श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे चतुस्सप्ततितमस्सर्गः । ityārṣē vālmīkīyē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē catussaptatitamassargaḥ । Thus concludes the seventy fourth Sarga in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
