Highlights of the temple:
1. Iravatheshwar temple is a suyambu lingam temple, said to be some 1800 years old. Iravatheshwar was worshipped by Indiran and his divine vehicle Iravatham.
2. This temple is an irratai sannithi temple ie. there are two moolavars.
a. Iravatheshwar- The suyambu lingam on which the elephant face is carved out naturally to mark Iravatham worshipping the lord here. hence the village is called -hasthiugam-athimugam.
b. Alageshwarar. This is said to have been installed by the hoysala kings Iravatheshwar lingam is 4 ft low, buried in the ground. so the temple had been below the village. To satisfy vastu rules and keep the temple’s gopuram above the village, the kings have built another temple and worshipped another moolavar whose gopuram stands atop the village.
3. Amman statue is behind the suyambu lingam iravatheshwar, something quite uncommon in tamilnadu temples.
4. There is a pambu puttru which is believe to be as old as the temple and since it has stood by ages, its now turned to a solid rock.
5. The sthala viruksham is Bilva maram. It is also 1800 years old and it is said to be the very oldest, tallest and biggest in the world. it is still very lively and majestic.
6. The nandhi in the suyambu lingam shrine is not straight to the lingam, but stands little sidelined. legend holds that Surya worships the lingam every year during the month of thai. Sun’s rays is said to fall on the suyambu lingam on that day So the nandhi has sidelined himself for the sun’s rays to fall on the lingam and facilitate surya worship.
7. The temple is specifically beneficial for career growth, industrial growth. All the devotees who are thronging the temple now are beneficiaries of the lord by way of career growth and industrial growth. Just 5 pradosha visit will bring out huge huge change in one's career.8. The temple is almost 7ft below the village and furthermore the suyambu lingam is 3ft below the ground level of the temple...very astounding features which cannot be found in any other temple in Tamilnadu
Sthala Puranam.
In Thretha yuga there was an asura named viruthirasura. He was a nasty, notorious asura who disturbed all the rishis and sages. The sages complained about viruthirasura to Indira. Indira waged a fierceful war against viruthirasura. and finally won over him with the help of Iravatham, his divine vehicle.
Though killing of the asura was justified, Indira and Iravatham get bramahathi dosham for killing a living being. when they lost all their powers and charm, they heard a voice from the sky asking them to go to agasthiya nathi karai and find the suyambu lingam there. They were directed to worship for 48 days and at the end of the 48th day ,lord shiva was said to appear, and relive them of the Dosha.
Indira and his vahana both set out in search of the suyambu lingam. They found it and worshiped with all niyamas for 48 days . On the 48th day as per the promise, lord Shiva appeared and blessed them.
Indira wanted this history to be marked and asked the lord to stay there and relieve all the devotees who come there for vimochana. The kind lord consented, he also said the suyambu lingam which the elephant worshiped will have the elephant face carved out naturally and the temple will be known as hasthimugam, the lord the iravatheshwarar.
And most important of all....since iravatham obliged and did its work perfectly, this sthalam will be beneficial for all those who come here for career growth.
