Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 25 In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa sends his spies Ṡuka and Sāraṇa to find out the size, strength and other details of the Vānara army. They disguise themselves as Vānaras and enter the army, but get caught by Vibheeshaṇa and taken to Rāma. Rāma, contrary to their fears, asks them to feel free to check the entire army out and report the details to Rāvaṇa. He passes a warning to Rāvaṇa through them that he will be attacking and destroying Laṅkā the next morning. Ṡuka and Sāraṇa go back to Laṅkā and advice Rāvaṇa that it is better for him to give Seetā back to Rāma and make peace with him.
6.25.1 अ 6.25.1 आ 6.25.1 इ 6.25.1 ई	सबले सागरं तीर्णे रामे दशरथात्मजे । अमात्यौ रावणः श्रीमान् अब्रवीच्छुकसारणौ ॥ sabalē sāgaraṃ tīrṇē rāmē daṡarathātmajē । amātyau rāvaṇaḥ ṡrīmān abravīcchukasāraṇau ॥ With Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha, successfully crossing the ocean along with his forces, the rich Rāvaṇa said to his ministers, Ṡuka and Sāraṇa:
6.25.2 अ 6.25.2 आ 6.25.2 इ 6.25.2 ई 6.25.3 अ 6.25.3 आ	समग्रं सागरं तीर्णम् दुस्तरं वानरं बलम् । अभूतपूर्वं रामेण सागरे सेतुबन्धनम् । सागरे सेतुबन्धं तु न श्रद्दध्यां कथञ्चन ॥ samagraṃ sāgaraṃ tīrṇam dustaraṃ vānaraṃ balam । abhūtapūrvaṃ rāmēṇa sāgarē sētubandhanam । sāgarē sētubandhaṃ tu na ṡraddadhyāṃ kathañcana ॥ The Vānara force, in its entirety, has crossed the impassable ocean. Nothing like this – of Rāma building a bridge over the ocean – has ever happened. I find it hard to believe that a bridge has been built over the ocean.

Both of you should enter the Vānara force in disguise and find everything in detail, its size and prowess, who the chiefs among the Vānaras are, who the advisors that accompanied Rāma and Sugreeva are, who the leaders of the vanguard are, who the most valiant Vānaras are, how they built the bridge on the waters of the ocean, how the mighty Vānaras have been stationed, what Rāma’s plans are, how valorous he is and what kind of arsenal he has, and also about the valor of Lakshmaṇa.
6.25.8 अ 6.25.8 आ 6.25.8 इ 6.25.8 ई	कश्च सेनापतिस्तेषाम् वानराणां महौजसाम् । एतज्ज्ञात्वा यथातत्त्वम् शीघ्रमागन्तुमर्हथः ॥ kaṡca sēnāpatistēṣām vānarāṇāṃ mahaujasām । ētajjñātvā yathātattvam ṡīghramāgantumarhathaḥ ॥ Find out who the chief of army of those Vānaras of immense strength, for sure, is, and return quickly.
6.25.9 अ 6.25.9 आ 6.25.9 इ 6.25.9 ई	इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ । हरिरूपधरौ वीरौ प्रविष्टौ वानरं बलम् ॥ iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau ṡukasāraṇau । harirūpadharau vīrau praviṣṭau vānaraṃ balam ॥ Thus ordered, the Rakshasas Ṡuka and Sāraṇa disguising themselves as Vānaras entered the Vānara army.
6.25.10 अ 6.25.10 आ 6.25.10 इ 6.25.10 ई	ततस्तद्वानरं सैन्यम् अचिन्त्यं रोमहर्षणम् । सङ्ख्यातुं नाध्यगच्छेताम् तदा तौ शुकसारणौ ॥ tatastadvānaraṃ sainyam acintyaṃ rōmaharṣaṇam । saṅkhyātuṃ nādhyagacchētām tadā tau ṡukasāraṇau ॥ However, Ṡuka and Sāraṇa could not estimate the Vānara force that was beyond imagination and that made one’s hair stand on its end.
6.25.11 अ 6.25.11 आ 6.25.11 इ 6.25.11 ई 6.25.12 अ 6.25.12 आ 6.25.12 इ 6.25.12 ई 6.25.13 अ 6.25.13 आ	संस्थितं पर्वताग्रेषु निर्दरेषु गुहासु च । समुद्रस्य च तीरेषु वनेषूपवनेषु च । तरमाणं च तीर्णं च तर्तुकामं च सर्वशः । निविष्टं निविशच्चैव भीमनादं महाबलम् । तद्बलार्णवमक्षोभ्यम् ददृशाते निशाचरौ ॥ saṃsthitaṃ parvatāgrēṣu nirdarēṣu guhāsu ca । samudrasya ca tīrēṣu vanēṣūpavanēṣu ca । taramāṇaṃ ca tīrṇaṃ ca tartukāmaṃ ca sarvaṡaḥ । niviṣṭaṃ niviṡaccaiva bhīmanādaṃ mahābalam । tadbalā rṇavamakṣōbhyam dadṛṡātē niṡācarau ॥ The Rākshasas looked at that inviolable sea of fighters, some that had camped on the tops of mountains, some by the streams and the caves, some on the shoreline of the ocean and some in the woods and in groves on the outskirts. Some of the army had crossed (the bridge), some was still crossing, while the rest was waiting to cross. Some of that strong force which raised a mighty din had already camped, while some was still settling down.
6.25.13 इ 6.25.13 ई 6.25.14 अ 6.25.14 आ	तौ ददर्श महातेजाः प्रच्छन्नौ च विभीषणः । आचचक्षेऽथ रामाय गृहीत्वा शुकसारणौ ॥ tau dadarṡa mahātējāḥ pracchannau ca vibhīṣaṇaḥ । ācacakṣē'tha rāmāya gṛhītvā ṡukasāraṇau ॥ Vibhishana, of immense power noticed the two of them in disguise. He caught both Ṡuka and Sāraṇa and presented them to Rāma:
6.25.14 इ 6.25.14 ई 6.25.15 अ 6.25.15 आ	तस्येमौ राक्षसेन्द्रस्य मन्त्रिणौ शुकसारणौ । लङ्कायाः समनुप्राप्तौ चारौ परपुरञ्जय ॥ tasyēmau rākṣasēndrasya mantriṇau ṡukasāraṇau । laṅkāyāḥ samanuprāptau cārau parapurañjaya ॥ These two, Ṡuka and Sāraṇa, are the officials of the King of the Rākshasas, who have come from Laṅkā to spy, O Vanquisher of the enemy citadel!
6.25.15 इ 6.25.15 ई 6.25.16 अ 6.25.16 आ	तौ दृष्ट्वा व्यथितौ रामम् निराशौ जीविते तदा । कृताञ्जलिपुटौ भीतौ वचनं चेदमूचतुः ॥ tau dṛṣṭvā vyathitau rāmam nirāṡau jīvitē tadā । kṛtāñjalipuṭau bhītau vacanaṃ cēdamūcatuḥ ॥ Extremely worried on seeing Rāma and giving up their hopes of getting away alive, they said these words, scared and their palms joined in reverence:
6.25.16 इ 6.25.16 ई 6.25.17 अ 6.25.17 आ	आवामिहागतौ सौम्य रावणप्रहितावुभौ । परिज्ञातुं बलं कृत्स्नम् तवेदं रघुनन्दन ॥ āvāmihāgatau saumya rāvaṇaprahitāvubhau । parijñātuṃ balaṃ kṛtsnam tavēdaṃ raghunandana ॥ We both came here, O good sir, O scion of Raghus, sent by Rāvaṇa, to know all the details of this army.
6.25.17 इ 6.25.17 ई 6.25.18 अ 6.25.18 आ	तयोस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामो दशरथात्मजः । अब्रवीत् प्रहसन् वाक्यम् सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥ tayōstadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rāmō daṡarathātmajaḥ । abravīt prahasan vākyam sarvabhūtahitē rataḥ ॥ On hearing those words of theirs, Rāma the son of Daṡaratha, vested in the welfare of every being, said these words, laughing:
6.25.18 इ 6.25.18 ई 6.25.19 अ 6.25.19 आ	यदि दृष्टं बलं कृत्स्रम् वयं वा सुसमीक्षिताः । यथोक्तं वा कृतं कार्यम् छन्दतः प्रतिगम्यताम् ॥ yadi dṛṣṭaṃ balaṃ kṛtsram vayaṃ vā susamīkṣitāḥ । yathōktaṃ vā kṛtaṃ kāryam chandataḥ pratigamyatām ॥ If you are done with seeing the entire army and taking a good look at us and and completed all that you were bid to do, you can go back as you please!
6.25.19 इ 6.25.19 ई 6.25.20 अ 6.25.20 आ	अथ किञ्चिददृष्टं वा भूयस्तद्द्रष्टुमर्हथः । विभीषणो वा कार्त्स्न्येन भूयः सन्दर्शयिष्यति ॥ atha kiñcidadṛṣṭaṃ vā bhūyastaddraṣṭumarhathaḥ । vibhīṣaṇō vā kārtsnyēna bhūyaḥ sandarṡayiṣyati ॥ Or else, if there is anything that you have not seen, you shall again take a look at that too! Vibheeshaṇa will show all of it, again!
6.25.20 इ 6.25.20 ई 6.25.21 अ 6.25.21 आ	न चेदं ग्रहणं प्राप्य भेतव्यं जीवितं प्रति । न्यस्तशस्त्रौ गृहीतौ वा न दूतौ वधमर्हथः ॥ na cēdaṃ grahaṇaṃ prāpya bhētavyaṃ jīvitaṃ prati । nyastaṡastrau gṛhītau vā na dūtau vadhamarhathaḥ ॥ That you have been caught should not be a cause of fear regarding your life. Messengers who have surrendered their arms, or who have been caught, should not be killed.
6.25.21 इ 6.25.21 ई 6.25.22 अ 6.25.22 आ	पृच्छमानौ विमुञ्चैतौ चारौ रात्रिञ्चरावुभौ । शत्रुपक्षस्य सततम् विभीषण विकर्षणौ ॥ pṛcchamānau vimuñcaitau cārau rātriñcarāvubhau । ṡatrupakṣasya satatam vibhīṣaṇa vikarṣaṇau ॥ Release these two night-rovers, O Vibhishana! Spies as they are, they try their best to thwart the enemy!
6.25.22 इ 6.25.22 ई 6.25.23 अ 6.25.23 आ	प्रविश्य नगरीं लङ्काम् भवद्भ्यां धनदानुजः । वक्तव्यो रक्षसां राजा यथोक्तं वचनं मम ॥ praviṡya nagarīṃ laṅkām bhavadbhyāṃ dhanadānujaḥ । vaktavyō rakṣasāṃ rājā yathōktaṃ vacanaṃ mama ॥ Both of you, go to the city of Laṅkā and tell these words to the king of Rākshasas, the younger brother of the Financier, exactly as I tell you:
6.25.23 इ 6.25.23 ई 6.25.24 अ 6.25.24 आ	यद्बलं च समाश्रित्य सीतां मे हृतवानसि । तद्दर्शय यथाकामम् ससैन्यः सहबान्धवः ॥ yadbalaṃ ca samāṡritya sītāṃ mē hṛtavānasi । taddarṡaya yathākāmam sasainyaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ ॥ Show now, as you please, all that strength, along with the army and relations, on which you relied when you carried off my Seetā.	What a Ṡlōka, packing the challenge to and contempt for the enemy, strength and confidence in oneself and the possessiveness of the beloved, in so few words!
6.25.24 इ 6.25.24 ई 6.25.25 अ 6.25.25 आ	श्वः काल्ये नगरीं लङ्काम् सप्राकारां सतोरणाम् । राक्षसं च बलं पश्य शरैर्विध्वंसितं मया ॥ ṡvaḥ kālyē nagarīṃ laṅkām saprākārāṃ satōraṇām । rākṣasaṃ ca balaṃ paṡya ṡarairvidhvaṃsitaṃ mayā ॥ At dawn tomorrow you shall see the city of Laṅkā with its ramparts and gateways, its Rākshasas and forces destroyed by my arrows.
6.25.25 इ 6.25.25 ई 6.25.26 अ 6.25.26 आ	क्रोधं भीममहंमोक्ष्ये ससैन्ये त्वयि रावण । श्वः काल्ये वज्रवान् वज्रम् दानवेष्विव वासवः ॥ krōdhaṃ bhīmamahaṃmōkṣyē sasainyē tvayi rāvaṇa । ṡvaḥ kālyē vajravān vajram dānavēṣviva vāsavaḥ ॥ I shall let loose tomorrow at dawn, O Rāvaṇa, my terrible wrath along with my army on you, like Vāsava, the wielder of Vajra let loose the Vajra on Dānavas!
6.25.26 इ 6.25.26 ई 6.25.27 अ 6.25.27 आ 6.25.27 इ 6.25.27 ई	इति प्रतिसमादिष्टौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ । जयेति प्रतिनन्द्यैतौ राघवं धर्मवत्सलम् । आगम्य नगरीं लङ्काम् अब्रूतां राक्षसाधिपम् ॥ iti pratisamādiṣṭau rākṣasau ṡukasāraṇau । jayēti pratinandyaitau rāghavaṃ dharmavatsalam । āgamya nagarīṃ laṅkām abrūtāṃ rākṣasādhipam ॥ Discharged with this message, the Rakshasas Ṡuka and Sāraṇa thanked him, and hailing him with the cry, ‘Victory to you!’, returned to the city of Laṅkā, and informed the lord of Rākshasas:
6.25.28 अ 6.25.28 आ 6.25.28 इ 6.25.28 ई	विभीषणगृहीतौ तु वधार्हौ राक्षसेश्वर । दृष्ट्वा धर्मात्मना मुक्तौ रामेणामिततेजसा ॥ vibhīṣaṇagṛhītau tu vadhārhau rākṣasēṡvara । dṛṣṭvā dharmātmanā muktau rāmēṇāmitatējasā ॥ O lord of Rākshasas! We were caught by Vibheeshaṇa and could have very well been slain. We were released by Rāma, the Dharmātma of immense strength, when he saw us.
6.25.29 अ 6.25.29 आ 6.25.29 इ 6.25.29 ई 6.25.30 अ 6.25.30 आ 6.25.30 इ 6.25.30 ई 6.25.31 अ 6.25.31 आ 6.25.31 इ 6.25.31 ई	एकस्थानगता यत्र चत्वारः पुरुषर्षभाः । लोकपालोपमाः शूराः कृतास्त्रा दृढविक्रमाः । रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमान् लक्ष्मणश्च विभीषणः । सुग्रीवश्च महातेजा महेन्द्रसमाविक्रमः । एते शक्ताः पुरीं लङ्काम् सप्राकारां सतोरणाम् । अत्पाट्य सङ्क्रामयितुम् सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु वानराः ॥ ēkasthānagatā yatra catvāraḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ । lōkapālō pamāḥ ṡūrāḥ kṛtāstrā dṛḍhavikramāḥ । rāmō dāṡarathiḥ ṡrīmān lakṣmaṇaṡca vibhīṣaṇaḥ । sugrīvaṡca mahātējā mahēndrasamāvikramaḥ । ētē ṡaktāḥ purīṃ laṅkām saprākārāṃ satōraṇām । atpāṭya saṅkrāmayitum sarvē tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ ॥ The four heroic and valorous bulls among men, Rāma the son of Daṡaratha, Lakshmaṇa the blessed one, Vibheeshaṇa, Sugreeva of immense strength who equals Mahēndra in prowess, all of whom are equals of the Rulers of the Worlds, savants of Astras with unshakable prowess, coming together at one place, can uproot the city of Laṅkā with all its ramparts and gateways and transport it elsewhere; leave alone all the other Vānaras.
6.25.32 अ 6.25.32 आ 6.25.32 इ 6.25.32 ई	यादृशं तस्य रामस्य रूपं प्रहरणानि च । वधिष्यति पुरीं लङ्काम् एकस्तिष्ठन्तु ते त्रयः ॥ yādṛṡaṃ tasya rāmasya rūpaṃ praharaṇāni ca । vadhiṣyati purīṃ laṅkām ēkastiṣṭhantu tē trayaḥ ॥ Rāma’s personality and weapons are such that he alone, all by himself, can destroy Laṅkā, leave alone the other three.
6.25.33 अ 6.25.33 आ 6.25.33 इ 6.25.33 ई	रामलक्ष्मणगुप्ता सा सुग्रीवेण च वाहिनी । बभूव दुर्धर्षतरा सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥ rāmalakṣmaṇaguptā sā sugrīvēṇa ca vāhinī । babhūva durdharṣatarā sēndrairapi surāsuraiḥ ॥ Protected by Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Sugreeva, that army is unassailable even for the Suras and Asuras, joined by Indra.
6.25.34 अ 6.25.34 आ 6.25.34 इ 6.25.34 ई	प्रहृष्टरूपा ध्वजिनी वनौकसां महात्मनां सम्प्रति योद्धुमिच्छताम् । अलं विरेधेन शमो विधीयतां प्रदीयतां दाशरथाय मैथिली ॥ prahṛṣṭarūpā dhvajinī vanaukasāṃ mahātmanāṃ samprati yōddhumicchatām । alaṃ virēdhēna ṡamō vidhīyatāṃ pradīyatāṃ dāṡarathāya maithilī ॥ The army of the mighty dwellers of the forest is in high spirits and ready to attack at any moment; it is time to bury the hatchet and make peace. May Maithili be given back to the son of Daṡaratha.
	इत्यार्षे वाल्मीकीये श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे पञ्चविंशः सर्गः॥ ityārṣē vālmīkīyē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē yuddhakāṇḍē pañcaviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ॥ Thus concludes the twenty fifth Sarga in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 26 In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa goes up to the top of his palace to take a view of the Vānara army. He then asks Sāraṇa to explain to him the details of the army and its captains. Sāraṇa then points to each one of the commanders, Neela, Aṅgada, Nala, Ṡwēta, Kumuda, Rambha, Sālvēya, Panasa, Krathana and describes their background, their abilities and the size of the forces they command and how eager they are to challenge Rāvaṇa in a fight and to smash Laṅkā.
6.26.1 अ 6.26.1 आ 6.26.1 इ 6.26.1 ई	तद्वचः पथ्यमक्लीबम् सारणेनाभिभाषितम् । निशम्य रावणो राजा प्रत्यभाषत सारणम् ॥ tadvacaḥ pathyamaklībam sāraṇēnābhibhāṣitam । niṡamya rāvaṇō rājā pratyabhāṣata sāraṇam ॥ Hearing that wholesome advice of Sāraṇa spoken without mincing words, Rāvaṇa, the king, responded to him:
6.26.2 अ 6.26.2 आ 6.26.2 इ 6.26.2 ई	यदि मामभियुञ्जीरन् देवगन्धर्वदानवाः । नैव सीतां प्रदास्यामि सर्वलोकभयादपि ॥ yadi māmabhiyuñjīran dēvagandharvadānavāḥ । naiva sītāṃ pradāsyāmi sarvalōkabhayādapi ॥ Even if the gods, the Gandharvas and the Dānavas should join together to fight me, I will not give Seetā back, nor even for fear of all the worlds.
6.26.3 अ 6.26.3 आ 6.26.3 इ 6.26.3 ई 6.26.4 अ 6.26.4 आ	त्वं तु सौम्य परित्रस्तो हरिभिर्निर्जितो भृशम् । प्रतिप्रदानमद्यैव सीतायाः साधु मन्यसे । को हि नाम सपत्नो माम् समरे जेतुमर्हति ॥ tvaṃ tu saumya paritrastō haribhirnirjitō bhṛṡam । pratipradānamadyaiva sītāyāḥ sādhu manyasē । kō hi nāma sapatnō mām samarē jētumarhati ॥ My dear! Harassed severely by the Vānaras, you are in jitters and think that it is better (for me) to give Seetā back! Where is the enemy worthy of his name who can vanquish me in a battle!
6.26.4 इ 6.26.4 ई 6.26.5 अ 6.26.5 आ 6.26.5 इ 6.26.5 ई	इत्युक्त्वा परुषं वाक्यम् रावणो राक्षसाधिपः । आरुरोह ततः श्रीमान् प्रासादं हिमपाण्डरम् । बहुतालसमुत्सेधम् रावणोऽथ दिदृक्षया ॥ ityuktvā paruṣaṃ vākyam rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ । ārurōha tataḥ ṡrīmān prāsādaṃ himapāṇḍaram । bahutālasamutsēdham rāvaṇō'tha didṛkṣayā ॥ Having snubbed (him) with those harsh words, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākshasas, climbed on to the palace that was white like snow and was as tall as multiple palm trees (standing one upon another), to see for himself.
6.26.6 अ 6.26.6 आ 6.26.6 इ 6.26.6 ई 6.26.7 अ 6.26.7 आ	ताभ्यां चराभ्यां सहितो रावणः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः । पश्यमानः समुद्रं च पर्वतांश्च वनानि च । ददर्श पृथिवीदेशम् सुसम्पूर्णं प्लवङ्गमैः ॥ tābhyāṃ carābhyāṃ sahitō rāvaṇaḥ krōdhamūrcchitaḥ । paṡyamānaḥ samudraṃ ca parvatāṃṡca vanāni ca । dadarṡa pṛthivīdēṡam susampūrṇaṃ plavaṅgamaiḥ ॥ With the spies accompanying him, Rāvaṇa was filled with rage as he saw the mountains and the forests teeming with, and the land-mass in its entirely filled with, Vānaras.
6.26.7 इ 6.26.7 ई 6.26.8 अ 6.26.8 आ	तदपारमसङ्ख्येयम् वानराणां महद्बलम् । आलोक्य रावणो राजा परिपप्रच्छ सारणम् ॥ tadapāramasaṅkhyēyam vānarāṇāṃ mahadbalam । ālōkya rāvaṇō rājā paripapraccha sāraṇam ॥ On seeing that huge and endless army of countless Vānaras, Rāvaṇa, the king, asked Sāraṇa:
6.26.8 इ 6.26.8 ई 6.26.9 अ 6.26.9 आ	एषां वानरमुख्यानाम् के शूराः के महाबलाः । के पूर्वमभिवर्तन्ते महोत्साहाः समन्ततः ॥ ēṣāṃ vānaramukhyānām kē ṡūrāḥ kē mahābalāḥ । kē pūrvamabhivartantē mahōtsāhāḥ samantataḥ ॥ Who are the most valiant and most powerful among the notable Vānaras? Who are the ones that lead the charge everywhere with zest?
6.26.9 इ 6.26.9 ई 6.26.10 अ 6.26.10 आ	केषां शृणोति सुग्रीवः के वा यूथपयूथपाः । सारणाचक्ष्व तत्त्वेन के प्रधानाः प्लवङ्गमाः ॥ kēṣāṃ ṡṛṇōti sugrīvaḥ kē vā yūthapayūthapāḥ । sāraṇācakṣva tattvēna kē pradhānāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ ॥ Whom does Sugreeva lend an ear to? Who commands the army captains? Who are the important ones among the Vānaras? Tell me everything in detail, Sāraṇa!
6.26.10 इ 6.26.10 ई 6.26.11 अ 6.26.11 आ	सारणो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वचनं परिपृच्छतः । आचचक्षेऽथ मुख्यज्ञो मुख्यांस्तांस्तु वनौकसः ॥ sāraṇō rākṣasēndrasya vacanaṃ paripṛcchataḥ । ācacakṣē'tha mukhyajñō mukhyāṃstāṃstu vanaukasaḥ ॥ Asked thus by the lord of Rākshasas, Sāraṇa, who knew who the chiefs were, said these words about the chiefs of the Vana dwellers:
6.26.11 इ 6.26.11 ई 6.26.12 अ 6.26.12 आ 6.26.12 इ 6.26.12 ई 6.26.13 अ 6.26.13 आ 6.26.13 इ 6.26.13 ई 6.26.14 अ 6.26.14 आ	एष योऽभिमुखो लङ्काम् नर्दंस्तिष्ठति वानरः । यूथपानां सहस्राणाम् शतेन परिवारितः । यस्य घोषेण महता सप्राकारा सतोरणा । लङ्का प्रवेपते सर्वा सशैलवनकानना । सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः । बलाग्रे तिष्ठते वीरो नीलो नामैष यूथपः ॥ ēṣa yō'bhimukhō laṅkām nardaṃstiṣṭhati vānaraḥ । yūthapānāṃ sahasrāṇām ṡatēna parivāritaḥ । yasya ghōṣē ṇa mahatā saprākārā satōraṇā । laṅkā pravēpatē sarvā saṡailavanakānanā । sarvaṡākhāmṛgēndrasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ । balāgrē tiṣṭhatē vīrō nīlō nāmaiṣa yūthapaḥ ॥ The valiant Vānara who stands at the head of the army of the mighty Sugreeva, the lord of the beasts of the branches, facing and baying at Laṅkā with a hundred thousand captains around him and whose roar shakes the entire Laṅkā along with its ramparts, gateways, hills, woods and the forests, is the commander known as Neela.
6.26.14 इ 6.26.14 ई 6.26.15 अ 6.26.15 आ 6.26.15 इ 6.26.15 ई 6.26.16 अ 6.26.16 आ 6.26.16 इ 6.26.16 ई 6.26.17 अ 6.26.17 आ 6.26.17 इ 6.26.17 ई	बाहू प्रगृह्य यः पद्भ्याम् महीं गच्छति वीर्यवान् । लङ्कामभिमुखः क्रोधात् अभीक्ष्णं च विजृम्भते । गिरिशृङ्गप्रतीकाशः पद्मकिञ्जल्कसन्निभः । स्फोटयत्यभिसंरब्धो लाङ्गूलं च पुनःपुनः । यस्य लाङ्गूलशब्देन स्वनन्ति प्रदिशो दश । एष वानरराजेन सुग्रीवेणाभिषेचितः । योवराज्येऽङ्गदो नाम त्वामाह्वयति संयुगे ॥ bāhū pragṛhya yaḥ padbhyām mahīṃ gacchati vīryavān । laṅkāmabhimukhaḥ krōdhāt abhīkṣṇaṃ ca vijṛmbhatē । giriṡṛṅgapratīkāṡaḥ padmakiñjalkasannibhaḥ । sphōṭayatyabhisaṃrabdhō lāṅgūlaṃ ca punaḥpunaḥ । yasya lāṅgūlaṡabdēna svananti pradiṡō daṡa । ēṣa vānararājēna sugrīvēṇābhiṣēcitaḥ । yōvarājyē'ṅgadō nāma tvāmāhvayati saṃyugē ॥ That valorous one with the sheen of lotus filaments, huge like a mountain-crest, his arms crossed and his feet stamping the ground, extremely spirited to charge against Laṅkā, flinging his tail in violent excitement with its sound reverberating in every direction is Aṅgada, who has been consecrated as the crown prince by Sugreeva, the king of Vānaras and he challenges you to a fight.
6.26.18 अ 6.26.18 आ 6.26.18 इ 6.26.18 ई	वालिनः सदृशः पुत्रः सुग्रीवस्य सदा प्रियः । राघवार्थे पराक्रान्तः शक्रार्थे वरुणो यथा ॥ vālinaḥ sadṛṡaḥ putraḥ sugrīvasya sadā priyaḥ । rāghavārthē parākrāntaḥ ṡakrārthē varuṇō yathā ॥ He is Vāli’s son and an equal to him, and he is ever dear to Sugreeva. He is eager to attack for the cause of Rāma as Varuṇa is for Ṡakra.
6.26.19 अ 6.26.19 आ 6.26.19 इ 6.26.19 ई	एतस्य सा मतिः सर्वा यद् दृष्टा जनकात्मजा । हनूमता वेगवता राघवस्य हितैषिणा ॥ ētasya sā matiḥ sarvā yad dṛṣṭā janakātmajā । hanūmatā vēgavatā rāghavasya hitaiṣiṇā ॥ It was all due to his sagacity that Hanumān of immense speed and devotion to Rāma’s interest was able to discover Janaka’s daughter.
6.26.20 अ 6.26.20 आ 6.26.20 इ 6.26.20 ई	बहूनि वानरेन्द्राणाम् एष यूथानि वीर्यवान् । परिगृह्याभियाति त्वाम् स्वेनानीकेन मर्दितुम् ॥ bahūni vānarēndrāṇām ēṣa yūthāni vīryavān । parigṛhyābhiyāti tvām svēnānīkēna marditum ॥ This valiant one is leading the many contingents of the Vānara forces against you, wishing to smash you with his forces.
6.26.21 अ 6.26.21 आ 6.26.21 इ 6.26.21 ई	अनु वालिसुतस्यापि बलेन महता वृतः । वीरस्तिष्ठति सङ्ग्रामे सेतुहेतुरयं नलः ॥ anu vālisutasyāpi balēna mahatā vṛtaḥ । vīrastiṣṭhati saṅgrāmē sētuhēturayaṃ nalaḥ ॥ The warrior who is seen next to Aṅgada ready for a fight with the mighty army around him is Nala, who is responsible for building the bridge.
6.26.22 अ 6.26.22 आ 6.26.22 इ 6.26.22 ई 6.26.23 अ 6.26.23 आ 6.26.23 इ 6.26.23 ई 6.26.24 अ 6.26.24 आ 6.26.24 इ 6.26.24 ई	ये तु विष्टभ्य गात्राणि क्ष्वेलयन्ति नदन्ति च । उत्थाय च विजृम्भन्ते क्रोधेन हरिपुङ्गवाः । एते दुष्प्रसहा घोराः चण्डाश्चण्डपराक्रमाः । अष्टौ शतसहस्राणि दशकोटिशतानि च । य एनमनुगच्छन्ति वीराश्चन्दनवासिनः । एषैवाशंसते लङ्काम् स्वेनानीकेन मर्दितुम् ॥ yē tu viṣṭabhya gātrāṇi kṣvēlayanti nadanti ca । utthāya ca vijṛmbhantē krōdhēna haripu ṅgavāḥ । ētē duṣprasahā ghōrāḥ caṇḍāṡcaṇḍaparākramāḥ । aṣṭau ṡatasahasrāṇi daṡakōṭiṡatāni ca । ya ēnamanugacchanti vīrāṡcandanavāsinaḥ । ēṣaivāṡaṃsatē laṅkām svēnānīkēna marditum ॥ With the thousand crore and eight lakh valorous, angry, terrible, fierce, invincible bulls among Vānaras of fierce prowess who live in sandal woods following him letting off war-whoops and strident shouts, jumping up and ready for the fare with their bodies tightened and poised, he wishes to smash Laṅkā with his forces.
6.26.25 अ 6.26.25 आ 6.26.25 इ 6.26.25 ई 6.26.26 अ 6.26.26 आ 6.26.26 इ 6.26.26 ई	श्वेतो रजतसङ्काशः चपलो भीमविक्रमः । बुद्धिमान् वानरः वीरस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः । तूर्णं सुग्रीवमागत्य पुनर्गच्छति सत्वरः । विभजन् वानरीं सेनाम् अनीकानि प्रहर्षयन् ॥ ṡvētō rajatasaṅkāṡaḥ capalō bhīmavikramaḥ । buddhimān vānaraḥ vīrastriṣu lōkēṣu viṡrutaḥ । tūrṇaṃ sugrīvamāgatya punargacchati satvaraḥ । vibhajan vānarīṃ sēnām anīkāni praharṣayan ॥ Ṡwēta, the impatient and sagacious Vānara of fierce prowess, who is bright like silver, known in the three worlds for his valor, quickly goes to Sugreeva and comes back as quickly to busy himself dividing the forces (into companies) and infecting them with enthusiasm.
6.26.27 अ 6.26.27 आ 6.26.27 इ 6.26.27 ई 6.26.28 अ 6.26.28 आ 6.26.28 इ 6.26.28 ई 6.26.29 अ 6.26.29 आ 6.26.29 इ 6.26.29 ई 6.26.30 अ 6.26.30 आ 6.26.30 इ 6.26.30 ई	यः पुरा गोमतीतीरे रम्यं पर्येति पर्वतम् । नाम्ना संरोचनो नाम नानानगयुतो गिरिः । तत्र राज्यं प्रशास्त्येष कुमुदो नाम यूथपः । योऽसौ शतसहस्राणाम् सहस्रं परिकर्षति । यस्य वाला बहुव्यामा दीर्घलाङ्गूलमाश्रिताः । ताम्राः पीताः सिताः श्वेताः प्रकीर्णा घोरकर्मणः । अदीनो रोषणश्चण्डः सङ्ग्राममभिकाङ्क्षति । एषोऽप्याशंसते लङ्काम् स्à ��ेनानीकेन मर्दितुम् ॥ yaḥ purā gōmatītīrē ramyaṃ paryēti parvatam । nāmnā saṃrōcanō nāma nānānagayutō giriḥ । tatra rājyaṃ praṡāstyēṣa kumudō nāma yūthapaḥ । yō'sau ṡatasahasrāṇām sahasraṃ parikarṣati । yasya vālā bahuvyāmā dīrghalāṅgūlamāṡritāḥ । tāmrāḥ pītāḥ sitāḥ ṡvētāḥ prakīrṇā ghōrakarmaṇaḥ । adīnō rōṣaṇaṡcaṇḍaḥ saṅgrāmamabhikāṅkṣati । ēṣō'pyāṡaṃsatē laṅkām svēnānīkēna marditum ॥ This other commander, Kumuda by name, who once upon a time commanded the kingdom on the beautiful mountain called Saṃrōcana that is full of a variety of trees on the banks of river Gōmati carries with him a hundred thousand (Vānaras). This fierce Vānara who never had a dispirited moment, whose fur on the tail that measures multiple fathoms looks spine-chilling with its shades of red, yellow, black and white, is ravening for a fight and wants to smash Laṅkā with the forces under his command.
6.26.31 अ 6.26.31 आ 6.26.31 इ 6.26.31 ई 6.26.32 अ 6.26.32 आ 6.26.32 इ 6.26.32 ई 6.26.33 अ 6.26.33 आ 6.26.33 इ 6.26.33 ई 6.26.34 अ 6.26.34 आ	यस्त्वेष सिंहसङ्काशः कपिलो दीर्घकेसरः । निभृतः प्रेक्षते लङ्काम् दिधक्षन्निव चक्षुषा । विन्ध्यं कृष्णगिरिं सह्यम् पर्वतं च सुदर्शनम् । राजन् सततमध्यास्ते रम्भो नामैष यूथपः । शतं शतसहस्राणाम् त्रिंशच्च हरिपुङ्गवाः । यमेते वानराः शूराः चण्डाश्चण्डपराक्रमाः । परिवार्यानुगच्छन्ति लङ्कां मर्दितुमोजसा ॥ yastvēṣa siṃhasaṅkāṡaḥ kapilō dīrghakēsaraḥ । nibhṛtaḥ prēkṣatē laṅkām didhakṣanniva cakṣuṣā । vindhyaṃ kṛṣṇagiriṃ sahyam parvataṃ ca sudarṡanam । rājan satatamadhyāstē rambhō nāmaiṣa yūthapaḥ । ṡataṃ ṡatasahasrāṇām triṃṡacca haripuṅgavāḥ । yamētē vānarāḥ ṡūrāḥ caṇḍāṡcaṇḍaparākramāḥ । parivāryānugacchanti laṅkāṃ marditumōjasā ॥ This one who looks like a lion with tawny and long fur, whose gaze is fixed on Laṅkā as if he is going to burn it with his eyes, who commands over the Vindhya, Krishnagiri, Sahya and Sudarṡana mountains, is known as Rambha, O King! He is surrounded by thirty lakhs of dreadful, valorous bulls among Vānaras of terrific prowess who follow him to smash Laṅkā with their power.
6.26.34 इ 6.26.34 ई 6.26.35 अ 6.26.35 आ 6.26.35 इ 6.26.35 ई 6.26.36 अ 6.26.36 आ 6.26.36 इ 6.26.36 ई 6.26.37 अ 6.26.37 आ	यस्तु कर्णौ विवृणुते जृम्भते च पुनःपुनः । न च संविजते मृत्योः न च युद्धाद्विधावति । प्रकम्पते च रोषेण तिर्यक् च पुनरीक्षते । पश्यन् लाङ्गूलमपि च क्ष्वेलते च महाबलः । महाजवो वीतभयो रम्यं साल्वेयपर्वतम् । राजन् सततमध्यास्ते शरभो नाम यूथपः ॥ yastu karṇau vivṛṇutē jṛmbhatē ca punaḥpunaḥ । na ca saṃvijatē mṛtyōḥ na ca yuddhādvidhāvati । prakampatē ca rōá ��ēṇa tiryak ca punarīkṣatē । paṡyan lāṅgūlamapi ca kṣvēlatē ca mahābalaḥ । mahājavō vītabhayō ramyaṃ sālvēyaparvatam । rājan satatamadhyāstē ṡarabhō nāma yūthapaḥ ॥ This one of immense strength and great speed, who dilates his ears and snorts every now and then, who has no fear of death, who never flees from the battle field, who shakes in rage and glances across, who looks at his tail and lets off war-whoops, who knows no fear and who rules over the beautiful Sālvēya mountain, is a commander known as Ṡarabha, O King!
6.26.37 इ 6.26.37 ई 6.26.38 अ 6.26.38 आ	एतस्य बलिनः सर्वे विहारा नाम यूथपाः । राजन् शतसहस्राणि चत्वारिंशत्तथैव च ॥ ētasya balinaḥ sarvē vihārā nāma yūthapāḥ । rājan ṡatasahasrāṇi catvāriṃṡattathaiva ca ॥ All these strong ones, a hundred and forty thousand of them, known as Vihāras, are his captains, O king!
6.26.38 इ 6.26.38 ई 6.26.39 अ 6.26.39 आ 6.26.39 इ 6.26.39 ई 6.26.40 अ 6.26.40 आ 6.26.40 इ 6.26.40 ई 6.26.41 अ 6.26.41 आ	यस्तु मेघ इवाकाशम् महानावृत्य तिष्ठति । मध्ये वानरवीराणाम् सुराणामिव वासवः । भेरीणामिव सन्नादो यस्यैष श्रूयते महान् । घोषः शाखामृगेन्द्राणाम् सङ्ग्राममभिकाङ्क्षताम् । एष पर्वतमध्यास्ते पारियात्रमनुत्तमम् । युद्धे दुष्प्रसहो नित्यम् पनसो नाम यूथपः ॥ yastu mēgha ivākāṡam mahānāvṛtya tiṣṭhati । madhyē vānaravīrāṇām surāṇāmi va vāsavaḥ । bhērīṇāmiva sannādō yasyaiṣa ṡrūyatē mahān । ghōṣaḥ ṡākhāmṛgēndrāṇām saṅgrāmamabhikāṅkṣatām । ēṣa parvatamadhyāstē pāriyātramanuttamam । yuddhē duṣprasahō nityam panasō nāma yūthapaḥ ॥ This one, who stands out among the Vānara Veeras like a cloud in the sky and like Vāsava among the Suras, the din of whose army of the beasts of the branches, eager for war, booms like that of kettle drum, who rules over the unexcelled Pāriyātra mountain, and against whom it is ever possible to stand in a fight, is a commander known as Panasa.
6.26.41 इ 6.26.41 ई 6.26.42 अ 6.26.42 आ	एनं शतसहस्राणाम् शतार्धं पर्युपासते । यूथपा यूथपश्रेष्ठम् येषां यूथानि भागशः ॥ ēnaṃ ṡatasahasrāṇām ṡatārdhaṃ paryupāsatē । yūthapā yūthapaṡrēṣṭham yēṣāṃ yūthāni bhāgaṡaḥ ॥ Fifty hundred thousand captains who command various companies serve this foremost of the captains.
6.26.42 इ 6.26.42 ई 6.26.43 अ 6.26.43 आ 6.26.43 इ 6.26.43 ई 6.26.44 अ 6.26.44 आ 6.26.44 इ 6.26.44 ई	यस्तु भीमां प्रवल्गन्तीम् चमूं तिष्ठति शोभयन् । स्थितां तीरे समुद्रस्य द्वितीय इव सागरः । एष दर्दरसङ्काशो विनतो नाम यूथपः । पिबंश्चरति पर्णासाम् नदीनामुत्तमां नदीम् । षष्टिः शतसहस्राणि बलमस्य प्लवङ्गमाः ॥ yastu bhīmāṃ pravalgantīm camūṃ tiṣṭhati ṡōbhayan । sthitāṃ tīrē samudrasya dvitīya iva sāgaraḥ । ēṣa dardarasaṅkāṡō vinatō nāma yūthapaḥ । pibaṃṡcarati parṇāsām nadīnÄ muttamāṃ nadīm । ṣaṣṭiḥ ṡatasahasrāṇi balamasya plavaṅgamāḥ ॥ This one who, resembling the Dardura mountain, stands up, adding glory to the bustle of the fierce army that has camped on the shore of the ocean, itself looking like a second ocean, is a commander by name Vinata. He drinks the waters of Parṇāsa, the best of rivers, and commands a force of sixty hundred thousands.
6.26.45 अ 6.26.45 आ 6.26.45 इ 6.26.45 ई	त्वामाह्वयति युद्धाय क्रथनो नाम यूथपः । विक्रान्ता बलवन्तश्च यथायूथानि भागशः ॥ tvāmāhvayati yuddhāya krathanō nāma yūthapaḥ । vikrāntā balavantaṡca yathāyūthāni bhāgaṡaḥ ॥ This strong Vānara of great prowess, Krathana by name, challenges you to a fight with his forces well-divided into companies.
6.26.46 अ 6.26.46 आ 6.26.46 इ 6.26.46 ई 6.26.47 अ 6.26.47 आ 6.26.47 इ 6.26.47 ई 6.26.47 उ 6.26.47 ऊ	यस्तु गैरिकवर्णाभम् वपुः पुष्यति वानरः । अवमत्य सदा सर्वान् वानरान् बलदर्पितान् । गवयो नाम तेजस्वी त्वां क्रोधादभिवर्तते । एनं शतसहस्राणि सप्ततिः पर्युपासते । एषैवाशंसते लङ्काम् स्वेनानीकेन मर्दितुम् ॥ yastu gairikavarṇābham vapuḥ puṣyati vānaraḥ । avamatya sadā sarvān vānarān baladarpitān । gavayō nāma tējasvī tvāṃ krōdhādabhivartatē । ēnaṃ ṡatasahasrāṇi saptatiḥ paryupāsatē । ēṣaivāṡaṃsatē laṅkām svēnānīkēna marditum ॥ This one, whose well maintained body shines like the Gowrika mineral, who scorns all the Vānaras who themselves are haughty with their strength, is the powerful one called Gavaya. He is in a rage to challenge you and served by seventy lakhs (of Vānaras), wants to smash Laṅkā with his forces.
6.26.48 अ 6.26.48 आ 6.26.48 इ 6.26.48 ई	एते दुष्प्रसहा वीरा एषां संख्या न विद्यते । यूथपा यूथपश्रेष्ठाः एषां यूथानि भागशः ॥ ētē duṣprasahā vīrā ēṣāṃ saṃkhyā na vidyatē । yūthapā yūthapaṡrēṣṭhāḥ ēṣāṃ yūthāni bhāgaṡaḥ ॥ These are the valorous commanders and these are the foremost among the commanders with the forces properly apportioned and assigned to them. It is difficult to stand against them (in fight) and their numbers are difficult to estimate.
	इत्यार्षे वाल्मीकीये श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये युद्धकाण्डे षड्विंशः सर्गः॥ ityārṣē vālmīkīyē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē yuddhakāṇḍē ṣaḍviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ॥ Thus concludes the twenty sixth Sarga in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa, the first ever poem of humankind, composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
