Friends,
ASAK
You may be aware that every year an exam is conducted in all States/UTs to select students studying in Class VIII for Means cum Merit Scholarships. In Haryana the exam is conducted by the SCERT. I think the same may be the case in other States.
If selected the students receive Rs. 500/- per month till Class XII. As the name suggests the Scholarship is meant for only those who come from poor background. Obviously Rs. 500/- per month is not a small amount and more so as lot of Prestige is attached to the Scholarship. The entire family feels elated.
Generally students from Govt./Municipal Schools appear for the exam. In our locality too there are several such Schools where education till VIII is provided. But the students are from very poor background and more importantly, their family background is not such which can help them to compete for the Scholarship. Also, the Schools are in bad shape with few teachers and no other facilities.
Since last year we decided to do something for those students who were eager and willing to work hard. We started a bit late. But few of us went to the Schools regularly and coached them in the subjects for which exam is held.
There are two parts in the exam. One is the Mental Ability Test and the other one is Scholastic Aptitude Test. The first one is like Intelligence Test with the aim to test their reasoning, analytical ability and mental alertness. The second one includes Math, Physics, Chem, Biology & GK.
Even though we started late last year, eight students from the Schools in and around Palam Vihar have qualified for the Scholarship. Certainly it is a commendable achievement on the part of the students.
We are continuing the endeavor this year too in the same Schools.
I am sending this mail just to inform to you about this opportunity, in case you are not aware.
You must encourage students in your area to prepare for the exam and try to compete. If possible provide them with adequate guidance, otherwise it may be difficult for them to compete on their own. That will be a great service to the community/society.
