Hello:

When I run the AMPL IDE, i am getting an error message that it failed to start AMPL (invalid command:  create).  My ide directory is a subdirectory of my AMPL directory as required in the installation directions.  Can someone explain what I am doing wrong?

Sometimes an extra directory level is created when unpacking the IDE installation.  So the first thing I would check is that the directory containing the ampl executable also contains a directory named amplide, and that inside the amplide directory there are about a dozen directories and files, including an executable also named "amplide" or "amplide.exe".  If the amplide directory only contains another directory named amplide, then you should copy the contents of the second directory inside the first one.

If that is not the problem, next you should check that you are able to run the ordinary command-window version of AMPL, from your AMPL directory (by invoking "ampl" in a terminal window).  If that version does not start up properly, then it is the cause of the "failed to start AMPL" message in the IDE; send us the whole error message that you get when you try to start it.

If the command-window version does start up properly, then run the AMPL command "option version;" and send us the resulting string; also let us know the computer hardware and operating system that you are using.  Then we can investigate further.

Hello Bob:

The directory structure is OK, and I am able to run AMPL at the command line.  I am running Windows 7.  I have attached the file "optver.txt" that contains the string you requested.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

To try to reproduce your problem, I logged in to your account at our site and downloaded your AMPL for Courses bundle into a new folder under (64-bit) Windows.  Then I downloaded the IDE zipfile from www.ampl.com/API and copied the whole amplide folder into the AMPL for Courses folder.  (See screenshots below.)  But I found that the IDE did start up properly, and then "option version" showed the same string that you have seen when running the plain command-line version.

We did post an update to the IDE software yesterday.  So the first thing I would suggest is to download everything fresh and see if you get the same behavior.  Meanwhile I'll try the same test on another computer.
