ITTO Reports on Activities to Strengthen Timber Processing Efficiency

Itto2 October 2014: In the 'Final Report on Strengthening the Capacity to Promote Efficient Wood Processing Technologies in Tropical Timber Producing Countries,' the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) profiles its activities to support efficient wood processing technologies in Cameroon, Ghana, Guatemala and Mexico. The report focuses on a project that addresses primary secondary and tertiary production through the enhancement of capacity within mills.

The project sought to enhance awareness and understanding of the importance of improved efficiency in the processing of tropical timber and to validate methods for in-house training for the application of more efficient approachesIt focused on the identification of weaknesses in each area of processing, discussed the causes of the weaknesses and presented options to address problems and improve efficiency. Overall, the project report notes improved efficiency in processes such as log handling, sawing, drying, cutting, moulding and pressing. The project also targeted quality control, equipment maintenance and safety issues.

The activities were implemented under the 2012-2013 biennial work programme of the ITTO and were based on approaches piloted in Indonesia.
