So, I blew away my old install and did a ZIP install with dropping the old database. When I get to the database section of the install I get the error that I attached. I've reset the mysql root password and tested using the mysql command. I've confirmed that it's using port 3306. I've tried disabling SELinux. I've double checked that the files are owned by apache's user and group.

Error: Unable to connect to the database: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] No such file or directory

Are you able to 'ping localhost'?

Try using the real ip-address

Do you mean 127.0.0.1?  If it works with the ip address, the problem might be the /etc/hosts file was changed or is missing, because that's how localhost gets defined.

I would suggest reverting to "old installation" to determine if a problem exists with the system or with 4.1.1.

I would also suggest that this problem be brought to the attention of the developers by creating a new issue at https://github.com/ampache/ampache/issues.
