See https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki - especially
"https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki/Catalog" (Building your first
catalog);

The fact that you are using cpanel indicates that you might be using a
remote server for your Ampache installation. Don't know anything about
cpanel.

What it amount to is copying your music/video files to the location you
want to use when you create your catalogs as explained at the URL above.

Maybe you would have better luck asking your question in a c-panel
forum. Evidently no one using Ampache is also using C-Panel.

Or, since c-panel runs on Linux, you might learn a little Linux and use
cli commands to transfer files: ftp, scp, sftp, etc. Surely, the host
you have set up Ampache on has other means of transferring files.

Have you checked out http://www.cpanel.com/support/? There is a series
of tutorials at:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZk46idJS6s54hAX8K79_AY8brgBwPtHd

Included is "How to upload files to your account with FTP" and one on
"uploading files with secure ftp" (sftp).

They are the ones to ask about using cpanel.

Actually, Ampache does allow the upload of songs less than 8 mb but it
won't upload videos, it wasn't designed to be administered that way.

Ampache assumes that the music/video files already exist in a folder on
the system that it is running on: That's why I suggested using ftp which
can transfer larger number of files to the location where Ampache is
serving.

You don't indicate which version of Ampache you have installed.

If you still want to upload one file at a time, here is how to set it up:

1. Log in to Ampache as Administrator.

2. Create a catalog on the folder where you expect to store the files
that Ampache will stream.

3. Go to admin->system and make sure "Allow users to upload media" is
enabled.

4. set "Uploads catalog destination" to the name of the catalog you created.

Note: there are 8 directives to set to fine-tune the uploading of the
music files.

5. Click on "Update Preferences" at the bottom of the page.

6. Select Home->upload and enter "new" for both Artist and Album then
drag/drop the file you want to upload.

7. You will probably have to manually edit the artist/album information
for each file you upload.

Thanks for your reply.

To be honest, i still find it sooooo difficult to configure ampache as per your instructions.See this...

 You don't indicate which version of Ampache you have installed. (Version : 3.8.2)

1. Log in to Ampache as Administrator. ( i managed this),

2. Create a catalog on the folder where you expect to store the files
that Ampache will stream. ( i don't understand this line.when creating a catalog there are too difficult requirement am unable to see through i.e,Catalog Type: Filename Pattern: Folder Pattern:(no leading or ending '/'),Gather Art: Build Playlists from playlist Files (m3u, m3u8, asx, pls, xspf), Gather media types:)

3. Go to admin->system and make sure "Allow users to upload media" is enabled. ( this line i got it.though there is a check mark and a drop down-guest,user,content manager,catalog manager,admin, that i didn't get it).

4. set "Uploads catalog destination" to the name of the catalog you created. ( i did not get this)

Please read: https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki. It explains
installation, setting up first catalog, etc.

Administering Ampache isn't for the very beginner. It is necessary to
have at least a working understanding of Linux such as file and folder
(directory) paths, file ownerships, use of command line applications,
etc. I'm guessing you are a Windows user if you know nothing about
file/folder paths. You need to find an online Linux tutorial or a
hardcopy Linux primer and learn some Linux basics.

As for the file and path pattern and playlist, the defaults can be
used(no change needed) until you get a feel of administering Ampache.

You only need to give the catalog a name, set the catalog type to
"local" and enter the path to the location you want to upload/store the
music files.

As for the Admin->system page, the wiki explains the access level
(drop-down list). This list sets the minimum access level. The checkbox
over-rides the drop-down list and sets the preference for all users.
See the column headers(labels).

I finally got this software installed.. But yes adding songs is so complex. I can't do it. I followed the directions on BUILDING your 1st catalog etc but
for some reason when i try to add a catalog on the site it says that it does not exits. Someone PLEASE help me with a simple ABC 123 type setup steps..
Suggestion for future releases is to make it simple to add these things.. Have it so when you ADD a catalog it adds the folder for you so you dont have to go in the back end
thanks

Go to admin->Catalogs->Add a Catalog.

It is necessary to enter the full path to the music folder. starting at the root (/).  See the path entry in the image below.

The folders holding the music should be owned by the Apache user and group (apache:apache, I believe),  the command would be
chown -R apache:apache /path/to/music/folder.

Thank you for the help. I got everything up and running. Except for now i get a 404 error when trying to connect with an Andriod app.
Do you have any suggestions as to what might be happening?

In Admin->Server Config->system, enable "Use SubSonic backend".

PHP cUrl module should be loaded but not required.

PHP-GD module should be loaded for the Subsonic client to retrieve cover art.

How are you trying to access Ampache: on your local network, or via internet?

If by the internet, port forwarding will have to be set in  your router.

The setup can be tested by entering the following in the server browser:
http://your/ampache/location:port/rest/ping.view

The response  should be:

<subsonic-response version="1.10.1" status="failed">
    <error code="10" message="Required parameter is missing."/>
</subsonic-response>

You have port 88 in the web browser. Is the Apache server really watching port 88?  The standard is port 80 and doesn't need to be included as all browsers use 80 as the default.

Is the web browser on the same system as the web server, if so, the url would probably be http://192.168.X.X/rest/ping.view. The 192.168.x.x being the network IP of the system.

Does .htaccess exist in the /rest, /play, and /server folders?

It could be that the apache document root is not what you think it is.

502 bad gateway could be sent by the server for a number of reasons.

Could you send me a copy of httpd.conf and a copy of the virtualhost file if any?

In case this is still relevant: "localhost" means the computer you are on - you need to use your computer's hostname or IP adress on your phone. If you want to connect via the internet, you might also need to set up port forwarding.
