I was recommended to use ampache as I want to stream live video from an rtmp source into a html 5 browser. The reason I'm trying ampache is that I was told it would work with smartphones. I've installed ampache on a centos 7 machine but can't find anything about where one starts. Thanks for any pointers.

Try reading https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki/. RTMP assumes that
you want to stream Flash content. As RTMP must be transported via HTTP,
there seems to be some inefficiency.

Also to display RTMP (Flash) Videos in HTML5 Browser, It would have to
transcoded to mp4, ogg, or webm. The wiki describes how to set up your
config file for transcoding. Also Some system settings might have to be
changed on the admin tab.

There are a few, some working better than others: Radio Ampache for one,
but I'm not sure that it uses HTML5 for playing content.

thanks for your feedback ernie. I did look at the wiki before posting but there;'s little there about live streaming of video, it's mostly about accessing music files. Are there any example web pages around that show ampache working? Even better would be an example page that uses ampache to stream live video. Also, I'm a but confused regarding what you say about transcoding to mp4, ogg, or webm. Aren't these just for files only? I already have a streaming live video at http://198.91.92.112/stream/live/ and at http://198.91.92.112/stream/flowplayer/ but these pages don't work on a smartphone. I'd really like to see ampache at work....

Ampache can trans-code "on the fly". also, with Ampache, streaming would
require a third party app such as VLC. The transcode config would be set
up in config/ampache4.cfg.php.

In admin->options, allow streaming, allow video features. In
admin->streaming authorize HTML5 (and flash if so desired), and
optionally javascript.

Users then must set their own preferences for options and streaming.
Their ability to change settings would depend on the limitations you set
in admin->otpions.

One would normally select web player to view videos on the web page.
Right now, I'm viewing an mp4 video on my Samsung Galaxy J3. full screen
and Firefox as the web browser.

thanks again ernie, when you say you were viewing video on your Samsung Galaxy J3 I take it that wasn't using the two urls I previously gave (was it?). If not, would you be kind enough to check if either of those two urls play video on your phone?

Yes, The movie was being transferred by my own ampache server.

I tried both of your urls the first indicated that my device did not
support the stream and the second indicated that I need flash player
installed. The problem is that when I tried to install it, I was told
that my device doesn't support Adobe flash. I tried installing some
alternatives, from the Google play store, but they also did not work.
My phone is not listed on the Adobe Certified Devices list.

the problems you got on your phone are exactly the same as I got, and my phone wouldn't install a flash player either (too old). You mentioned earlier that streaming would require a third party app such as VLC, however I was told ampache should play video in a html5 browser, do you agree this is correct? If not I am wasting my time with ampache....I'm getting the feeling that streaming live video to mobiles might be way above my head.

Yes It will, but the user should select 'web player' not streaming and
you need to allow HTML5 to all users. It wouldn't take long to create a
catalog and try it out.

I never said that I was "streaming" the video from my server.

With Ampache, You gotta forget your understanding of "streaming"
especially with Video. Video needs to buffer or it would be very
erratic because the stream would not be constant: audio is streamed at
such a low bitrate that it usually is not affected by bandwidth and
other factors.

So with Ampache music radio channels would be ok: the channels are
limited to mp3 and ogg.

Possibly, you could set up coherence as the back end which can stream
multimedia.
